The Independent Labour Party (or ILP) was a political party in the United Kingdom. McNair was the local ILP head in Barcelona.

George Orwell joined an ILP contingent during the Spanish Civil War in 1937 and also signed up to fight for the Partido Obero de Uniﬁcacion Marxista as he considered it to be the local version of the ILP. Orwell's wife, Eileen, helped write an ILP newsletter for McNair to be sent back to the UK. (PROSE: History 101)
