Tories

The Tories was a disparaging term used for a 17th and 18th century British political party that were the followers of the King. The Whigs were their Opposition.

With King James II exiled at the end of the Glorious Revolution, his loyal subjects were reduced to a Tory rump who were named "Jacobite" and "traitor". (PROSE: Newtons Sleep)

  • The term Tory, as with Whig, eventually lost its disparaging connotations. The Tory movement evolved into the Conservative Party in 1834, which is still often referred to as the Tories or the Tory Party.
