Charon was a moon of Pluto, which was considered to be either the ninth planet of the Sol system or a dwarf planet.
As observed in ArcHivist Farazea's 14 Planet Theory, Charon was so relatively large that it could be described as Pluto's double planet. (AUDIO: Origins of the Cybermen [+]Loading...["Origins of the Cybermen (audio story)"])

By the 30th century, 800 years after its destruction, Charon was still highly radioactive. (PROSE: GodEngine [+]Loading...["GodEngine (novel)"])
Thousands of years after the 20th century, the Second Doctor, Ben Jackson and Polly visited Charon during a time when humans were planning to exploit the planet's supply of water. Buried in the planet was a pan-dimensional creature kept at bay by the minds of seven aliens in suspended animation. The aliens were killed by the xenophobic human explorer and scientist Professor Magellan. It was stopped by the Doctor who entered the gestalt system and left it without its aggressive impulses and more like a "big pussy cat". (PROSE: Pluto [+]Loading...["Pluto (short story)"])
Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]
- Although Pluto was downgraded from full planet to "dwarf planet" in 2006, numerous stories produced prior to this date and set in Earth's future identify Pluto as a planet and Charon as its moon, suggesting that, in the Doctor Who universe at least, Pluto's planetary status was eventually restored.
- Gallifrey Macula and Tardis Chasma are two geological features on Charon named after elements from Doctor Who.
