Synopsis[[edit] | [edit source]]
A haven for cybernetic lifeforms is under attack and only the Doctor and K-9 can stop it... with some help from Doom.
Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]
At Cal-Q-L0n, the Thirteenth Doctor and K9 are bound for a new adventure. She tells K9 to follow her and he obeys. The Doctor says that the pirates must be attempting to breach the outer hull of the place. K9 prepares his laser. At the same time the pirate ships are breaking down. K9 reports that the heat signatures are decreasing and the ships are losing power. She ponders how this could have happened if K9 didn’t do it. Behind them, a stranger tells them she was only doing her job.
(the above paragraph documents a later addition to the storyline which wasn’t present in the originally released story)
The Doctor and K9 have crossed paths with Doom who reveals herself to be an assassin and fixer of delicate situations. Asking what kind of job she has, the Doctor is told that there’s a pirate clean-up and she is present to do the deed. K9 interrupts, claiming to have placed the ad, having had the idea that it could help, and in return Doom is given information as a reward. Doom tells that she is looking for someone called "The Doctor". The Doctor replies that she is in luck.
Realising who the woman is, Doom excitedly says she has so many questions. She begins asking if she’s the real one, the Gallifreyan exile, and ask if she has an advanced time ship, not letting the Doctor get a word in. At this point, K9 interrupts again informing about the pirates approaching, and says he better remove the ad from the galaxy network. Doom interrupts, claiming to have dealt with them already.
The Doctor asks, suspicious, what Doom means by "dealt", and hopes she didn’t kill them, which Doom denies, K9 clarifies that the ad said disabling them. Doom asks for her reward, to which the Doctor ask to confirm she wanted information. Doom replies that this version of the Doctor is not the one she needs. K9 interrupts, saying they should give their guest a tour.
K9 explains that they are on the space station Cal-Q-L0n, a safe haven for robots and AI. Doom replies that she did notice the lack of organic denizens and was worried. The Doctor questions her. Doom reiterates the lack of organic lifeforms. The Doctor angrily asks if she thinks they… the robots got rid of their masters. Doom confirms that was what she thought. K9 replies that many of the denizens come from abandoned ships and planets and that lately there have been lots of pirates. The Doctor says she believe they call themselves the Scarlet Scavengers, and they threaten everyone. Doom replies that the jig is up, and asks who she really is.
The Doctor, annoyed, asks what Doom is implying, and Doom replies that she is not the Doctor she is looking for, she’s not even a Doctor at all. K9 protests that she is the Doctor. Doom retorts that as an assassin, she needs to be observant and "the Doctor" slipped up in the wording, and that alerted Doom. "The Doctor protests she is the Doctor, to which Doom snarkily replies that she herself is the Dalek Emperor then. "The Doctor" finally admits that it was all a ruse. Doom victoriously exclaims she knew it, but is surprised that "The Doctor" is transforming.
Kamelion suddenly stand where the Thirteenth Doctor stood, introducing himself. Doom is surprised as she expected an android duplicate. Kamelion replies he hopes his appearance is not unnerving. Doom assures him and asks if he can take any form, to which Kamelion says he can take any humanoid form. Doom asks if he's considered becoming an assassin, to which Kamelion replies that he once was, but has changed his ways. When Doom asks what changed him, he replies that travelling with the real Doctor did that.
K9 and Kamelion reveal that they started the ruse that Kamelion was the Doctor when the pirates attacked because the real Doctor was out of reach. Doom responds with her respect for faking it until you make it. K9 then reveal the Scavengers have taken the planet's inhabitants for parts. Doom responds that it is a pirate's nature to plunder, yet still surprised. When Kamelion ask what surprises her, Doom replies that their willingness to risk themselves as bravery isn’t programmable. K9 responds that they learned from the Doctor. Doom interrupts, asking if they know where she can find them. K9 is about to reply when his data shows the pirates are attacking.
Kamelion says he will return to his disguise as the Doctor, but Doom says she already handled it. K9 now emergency alerts that pirates have breached the hull, but Doom keeps reassuring them that she has it all under control. Kamelion is surprised to see the pirates has halted their approach, and K9 asks how. Doom replies that she did some hacking and sent a freighter into their domain filled with defective, modified ship parts. Kamelion asks what she means, and Doom responds that she paid somebody working in cargo to paint them red.
Doom then points out their name, Scarlet Scavengers, and says she thought they would like a chromatic theme to their own ships, and she was right. K9 applaud Doom and thanks her for her services. Kamelion, regretfully, informs her they can’t help her in her search for the Doctor, though. Doom is disappointed, but K9 tells her they will tell the Doctor about her if they encounter them. Doom then bids them farewell, leaving for the Time Vortex.
Doom then returns to her mid-way point and laments how she’s running out of time without getting any closer, but is hopeful that she'll find the Doctor soon, dreading what will happen if she doesn't. Her vortex manipulator activates, with a mission selected and ready to jump. Hopeful, Doom prepares to time jump.
Kamelion transforms back into the Thirteenth Doctor as K9 alerts "her" about some Movellans approaching. K9 acknowledges their lack of knowledge about their intentions and says they must protect the station. "The Doctor" then say that they will because "she" is the Doctor. K9 agrees to that.
