The Princess and the Frog was a 2009 American animated film by Walt Disney Animation Studios - the 49th film in what is often referred to as the "Disney Animated Canon". A continuation of Disney's tradition of adapting classic fairytale stories into animation, the film is based in part upon the 2002 novel The Frog Princess by E.D. Baker, itself a spoof of the classic german fairytale, The Frog Prince by the Brothers Grimm.

The film's moderate success led to appearances in a variety of other media, most notably with the film's titular princess, Tiana, becoming an official member of the Disney Princess franchise.

Crossovers with the DWU[[edit] | [edit source]]

In 2012, the film had its UK terrestrial television premiere on BBC One during the Christmas season; this premiere was among the channel's various festive programming to be promoted in their 2-part Christmas ident, It's Showtime, which also contained a promotion of that year's Doctor Who Christmas Special - The Snowmen.

In the first episode of the ident, in which Sarah Alexander and Rob Brydon are overseeing the BBC studio's frantic efforts to prepare for Christmas, Alexander informs Brydon that "the princess" has arrived, but that they "seem to have mislaid the frog", leading Brydon to exclaim that "[they] can't have the princess without the frog!" During this moment, a female dancer wearing what appears to be Tiana's trademark green gown can be seen.

The story continues into episode two where, after overseeing more preparations throughout the studio, Brydon returns to contemplating what they are going to do "without the frog for The Princess and the-" before being cut off by the TARDIS materialising nearby. The ident ends with the It's Showtime logo appearing over a shot of a red curtain; it is during this moment where the frog himself - the cursed Prince Naveen - hops onto the side of the screen to wave at the audience, before hopping away again.
