Voga — also known as the Planet of Gold and Neo Phobos — was a planet with an extremely high gold content. Originally located in the Voga system, the planet eventually drifted out of orbit and became a rogue planet, before being captured in the orbit of Jupiter in the Solar system.
It contained more gold than in the rest of the known galaxy, with rocks being 50% gold, sometimes even higher. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Revenge of the Cybermen) Because of this, golden objects were not considered impressive on the planet. (PROSE: Wishing Well)
History[[edit] | [edit source]]
Voga was originally a full sized planet, inhabited by the Vogans, and located in the Voga system. (PROSE: Jorus and the Voganauts) During the Cyber-Wars, the Vogans started supplying the gold dust which was used in the manufacturing of glitterguns. The Cybermen, whose respiratory unit innerworkings were extremely vulnerable to gold dust, tried to stop this by destroying the planet, but one emergency bunker, as well as some of the population, survived, which started drifting in space as a rogue planet. Centuries later, it was captured in Jupiter's orbit and discovered by humans (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Revenge of the Cybermen, TV: Revenge of the Cybermen) in the 29th century. (PROSE: Time Traveller's Diary)
The Cybermen later discovered the planet again and attempted to destroy the remaining gold so the humans wouldn't recreate the glitterguns and destroy them before they could launch another war. The attempt was unsuccessful and the Cyberman were destroyed. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Revenge of the Cybermen, TV: Revenge of the Cybermen)
According to another version of events, the Cybermen infiltrated Nerva to destroy a gold-rich asteroid, which was inhabited by a tribe of lost colonists. (AUDIO: Return of the Cybermen)
By the 40th century, Voga had been long since abandoned and was nothing more than a lifeless asteroid. Neal Corry and Jaim Gehässig had been sent there to do a documentary on the history of the Cybermen. (PROSE: Legacy)
After the discovery of gold planets such as Voga and Midas Superior, gold eventually became "worthless" to the colonies. By the year 250339, both planets were mined out. (PROSE: Night of the Humans)
Facing the Cybermen on a Mondasian colony ship, the Twelfth Doctor recalled defeating them on Voga among other places. (TV: The Doctor Falls)
Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]
- The complete excision of Voga from the storyline of Return of the Cybermen marks the primary difference between it and Revenge of the Cybermen (Return was adapted from the original script for Revenge). To reconcile the two different versions, John Dorney's original unused ending for Return revealed that the fallout of Genesis of the Daleks and the Last Great Time War result in the Return timeline becoming redundant and being overwritten by the Revenge timeline.[1]
- The Dead Ringers sketch "Doctor Who vs the Cybermen" has the Cybermen show the Fourth Doctor (Jon Culshaw) a picture book of some "lovely" invasions of other planets, including Voga.
