A star whale, or Galeen, was a giant, space-borne cetacean. They were sentient, and often came to the rescue of spacecraft in distress.

The Star Whales where giant Whales that flew around space. They where capable of living in space with apparently no oxygen. But they did eat meat. They could have City's built on top of them. (DW: The Beast Below)

The Star Whales once flew around space in harmony, until one day towards the end on the third milenia, there was only one left, this Space Whale went to Earth and saw that it was in great need. The People of the United Kingdom, built on top of it covering it up and it became known as Starship UK. After the Eleventh Doctor uncovered this the human race found out and it remained on the Starship UK in harmony.
Star whales were sentient and were similar-looking to Earth's cetaceans in basic structure. They had several flippers and tentacular protrusions down their stomach, as well as smaller, spiked tendrils on their back.

An antient and benevolent species the Star whales had acording to legened guided early Space travelers through dangers on their journeys through space. By the time of the 29 century the species was all but extinct save for who is theorised to be the last of its kind. When earth was facing destruction because of Solar flares that Star whale was drawn to earth. All the peoples of Earth had managed to escpe in massive city ships but the people of Grest Britian lacked the supplies to create an engine, the people were left hopless and mostly hearbroken by the sounds of their Children crying due to the increasing tempretures. It was these sounds that had drawn the whale to the planet for has Amy put it "When your that old and alone an so full of kindness what else can you do" who intended to offer its survaces to the stranded people.
Star whales travelled through space at speeds comparable to spaceships. (TV: The Beast Below (TV story)) In order to lose a pursuer, a star whale could dive in time, using its time core to plunge beneath the event horizon. This left a trail of tachyons in its wake. (AUDIO: The Song of Megaptera (audio story))

Unfortunatly the people of Grest Britian mis interpreted this gesture of good will has a chance in a million miracle and captured the whale, building their ship right on its back and carved opoen its brain to toture it in to moving. This led to the paridoxical situation in the insuing years has the people began to realise they could not justify their survival off of the suffering of an innocent creature. But they believed if they released it the creature would destroy the ship in its escape, so they devized the forget system to erase the memories and the Smilers and Winders to insure no one discovered the truth and to "Dispose" of those who didnt agree to have their memory erased.
Though they could communicate in an atmosphere, their voices were beyond the range of human hearing. (TV: The Beast Below (TV story)) Galeens transmitted their song as radio waves. (AUDIO: The Song of Megaptera (audio story)) They were capable of bioluminescence and had glowing patterns around their tendrils. (TV: The Beast Below (TV story))

Eventualy the Doctor discovered the heart of the ship where the Smilers and their controlers were toturing the Whale with electric shocks to keep it moving and faced the impossible situation. Angered that he would now have to sacrifice the life of an innocent and one of a kind being to save billions the Doctor was prepared to labotamise the Space Whale so it would no longer feel pain from the toture. Amy however noticed the Whale's neural tentrils affectionatly playing with the children who the whale always refused to eat when they were sent down below. Remembering the Doctor's lesson about always observins she quickly put the pieces together and ran over to the control system to press the "Abdicate" button freeing the Whale. The ship however did not explode has was originaly feared but instead started to move faster "Well now that the piolet's not being totured" Amy explained have deduced that the Whale had come willingly and was still willing to help the people of Great Britain.

By the 29th century, the species was believed extinct save for one individual. When Earth faced destruction because of solar flares, that star whale was drawn to Earth by the fear of the humans still there. All the peoples of Earth had escaped in massive city ships, but the people of the United Kingdom lacked an engine to get them to safety. The star whale intended to offer its services to the stranded people as it sensed the terror of the children and, being so old and kind, could not bear to see them cry.

Unfortunately, the people of the UK misinterpreted this gesture of good will as a lucky coincidence and captured it. They built their ship on its back and carved an opening to its brain to torture it into moving. The city built on its back became known as Starship UK. Similarly, Queen Elizabeth X (Liz Ten for short), whose body clock had been halted and who had ruled the British people for three hundred years, was faced with the choice to Forget or Abdicate every time she found out the truth. Abdication would free the star whale, but as previously stated, it was believed that this would destroy the Starship UK.

When the Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond came to Starship UK in the 33rd century, they investigated the ship. Along the way, Amy stumbled into a voting booth and learned the truth, only to vote to Forget. Eventually the Doctor discovered the heart of the ship, where Hawthorne and his workers were torturing the star whale with electric shocks to keep it moving, and faced the impossible situation. Seeing no reasonable options and disgusted by what the UK government had done, the Doctor tried to render the space whale brain-dead so it would no longer feel pain from the torture, but would continue to support the ship.
