Dated events
*19 - The Torchwood Three team investigates the Night Travellers. Events of TW: From Out of the Rain; date: WEB: torchwood.co.uk)
January - May
*By this time conspiracy theorists have begun noting the disappearance of bees from the planet Earth, which is also noted by Donna Noble. (DW: Partners in Crime, et al) It is later learned that they have left Earth in anticipation of its imminent relocation to the Medusa Cascade. (DW: The Stolen Earth)
<!--Donna's era and the early 21st century setting of the 2009 specials have been moved to 2000s, due to heavily contradictory dating in series 4, and no date at all in the specials.-->
On 20 January, Barack Obama was inaugurated as President of the United States, the first African-American in the position. (PROSE: Time Traveller's Diary)

April
Early in the year, over 4 months before August, Thomas Brewster and Gerald Lendler came to London. At the time, Lendler had stolen the Doctor's TARDIS from Brewster. When Brewster rummaged through Lendler's collection of valuable items, he accidentally woke up a hibernating Coffin-Loader and it escaped into the River Thames. It released methane and mould into the atmosphere, which increased Earth's temperature by 1 degree. (AUDIO: The Three Companions)
*The Sontarans invade Earth. During this event, Martha Jones is temporarily reunited with the Doctor and meets Donna Noble for the first time. Donna also narrowly misses witnessing a brief transmission from Rose Tyler in the TARDIS. As part of the Sontaran invasion plan, all ATMOS-equipped vehicles begin emitting a toxic gas intended to transform the world's atmosphere into a more hospitable one for Sontaran offspring; numerous fatalities are reported worldwide before the Doctor disables the devices. Afterwards, the ATMOS devices are removed from the planet's vehicles. (DW: The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky

May
*12 - Adelaide Brooke's 10th birthday. (birthdate seen in DW: The Waters of Mars)
In March, the Vostok came to Cardiff with the intentions of using its rift to bring the Earth into a new Ice Age. Torchwood Three visited Cardiff Bay after it was frozen and discovered the Vostok beneath the ice. They defeated the Vostok by covering the ice in fuel and dropping a match in the fuel, burning the Vostok alive. (COMIC: The Return of the Vostok)
*15 - 18 - the Mandragora Helix attempts a takeover of Earth through the MorganTech computer systems. (NSA: Beautiful Chaos)

*The Earth is relocated to the Medusa Cascade by the Daleks under the control of the Supreme Dalek and Davros. Despite the relocation, the planet retains a full communications network. An invasion of Earth by the Daleks commences and a number of humans are taken to "the Crucible", the Dalek mothership, where they are killed in tests of the reality bomb. As part of a counter-insurgency against the Dalek invasion, former Prime Minister Harriet Jones brings together a number of the Doctor's former companions, including Captain Jack Harkness, Sarah Jane Smith, and Martha Jones in order to contact the Doctor, and before she herself is killed by the Daleks. Rose Tyler, meanwhile, contacts Donna Noble's family and is ultimately reunited with the Doctor. During this incident, The Doctor undergoes a partial regeneration in order to repair damage from a Dalek blast; as a result of this, the Doctor's severed hand later forms a mental link with Donna and grows into a second version of the Doctor, but one that's half-human without Time Lord biological abilities such as regeneration. During this incident, Martha Jones, under orders from UNIT, reveals the existence of the Osterhagen Key, a weapon capable of destroying Earth. Due to her interaction with the second Doctor, Donna briefly gains the knowledge of a Time Lord, and with her help the two Doctors are able to defeat the Daleks. Afterwards, the Doctor and his companions are successful in restoring Earth to its original location using the TARDIS; this sparks worldwide celebrations around the planet. Afterwards, Mickey Smith chooses to remain on his original Earth instead of returning to Pete's World, Harkness offers Martha Jones a job with Torchwood Three, and the Doctor returns Rose and Jackie Tyler to Pete's World, along with his clone. Donna Noble is returned to her family, but with all memories of the Doctor wiped from her mind due to the danger to her survival posed by her transformation. (DW: The Stolen Earth/Journey's End) (Takes place within 6 weeks of NSA: Beautiful Chaos)
One account, but not others, which suggested this time as 2008, placed 15 May 2009 as the start of the Mandragora Helix's attempted takeover of Earth through the MorganTech computer systems. (PROSE: Beautiful Chaos)
** At some point during these events, a young girl named Adelaide Brooke loses her family and encounters a Dalek that, for reasons unknown to her, chooses not to exterminate her. This event inspires her to become an astronaut, becoming a trailblazer for human exploration of space - in her case, establishing the first human base on Mars in 2058 and, in turn, inspiring generations of Brookes who further expand human reach into the stars. (DW: The Waters of Mars)
* In the aftermath of the Medusa Cascade incident, the human race on Earth begins coming to terms with the fact it is not alone in the universe. While many accept it, others experience crises of faith and a large number of people commit suicide. (TW: Children of Earth: Day One)

June
June - August
* Brian Green becomes British Prime Minister.
On 6 June, the Atraxi extradimensional prison break occurred. (PROSE: Time Traveller's Diary)

September
On 28 June, Stephen Hawking held a party for time travellers at Gonville & Caius College, but he only sent out invitations after the event. (PROSE: Time Traveller's Diary)

* Over the course of five days, every child on Earth periodically stops in their tracks and begin reciting the same message (permutations of "We are coming"). Officially, Earth's governments claim it to be caused by a form of virus. Behind the scenes, the truth is this is a message from the 456, a race that had visited Earth in 1965 and negotiated the payment of 12 orphan children in exchange for the cure for a pandemic-level influenza virus. The 456 return to Earth and demand the payment of a significant percentage of Earth's children (for use in creating a narcotic). As part of a cover-up to divert blame away from the UK government, which brokered the original deal, the Torchwood 3 hub in Cardiff is destroyed and attempts are made to assassinate Jack Harkness, Gwen Cooper and Ianto Jones. During the course of events, Thames House becomes the centre of 456-related negotiations, and at one point all occupants of the building are exposed to a deadly gas, killing all except for Mr. Dekker and Jack Harkness. Among those killed is Ianto Jones. Ultimately, through the efforts of Harkness - who was involved in the original 1965 deal - and the sacrifice of Harkness' grandson, the 456 are driven from Earth. (TW: Children of Earth Date based upon on-screen evidence, specifically a newspaper headline.)
* During the course of these events, Gwen Cooper and husband Rhys Williams learn that she is pregnant.
* The government of Prime Minister Brian Green is toppled soon afterwards (assumption).
* Stricken with guilt over the death of his grandson, Jack Harkness leaves Cardiff and spends the next few months wandering the Earth.

October
Sometime before 18 August, Polly Wright read a blog post by Jo Jones about Jo's encounter with Doreen Killebrew in the 1970s. From this blog post, she learned that Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart knew the Doctor and they began exchanging emails on their past adventures with him. Eventually, they were contacted by Thomas Brewster, who thought they could help him deal with Gerald Lendler.

On 18 August, Polly and Alistair met up with Brewster at a restaurant where Brewster had been working for three weeks. Lendler had hired an alien hunter to deal with the creature. The Coffin-Loader came out of the River Thames and parts of London were flooded. Using Alistair as bait for the Coffin-Loader, the Hunter lured it to Trafalgar Square and killed it, returning Earth's climate to normal. Afterwards, with some convincing from Polly and Alistair, Lendler gave the Doctor's TARDIS back to Brewster. (AUDIO: The Three Companions)

(DW: The End of Time)
On 8:40AM GMT on a Wednesday in September, every child on Earth stopped in their tracks and recited the message, "We are coming", repeatedly, in English. Behind the scenes, the British government knew this came from the 456, a race who had visited Earth before. Gwen Cooper spoke to Clement McDonald, who also stopped and said the message, He told Gwen that when he was a child, the children on his orphanage bus were stolen away, with him almost being taken too. Jack Harkness had a bomb encased in his body which blew up the Torchwood Three hub. (TV: Children of Earth: Day One)

*25 - The Master is captured by soldiers working for Joshua Naismith so that the Master can help him use the Immortality Gate. However, the Master betrays him and as Barack Obama gives a speech on the Recession, uses the Gate's abilities, intended to heal planets, to turn every single Human on Earth except for Wilfred Mott and Donna Noble into copies of the Master. During this time a diamond harvested on Gallifrey is sent through time and space and crashes to Earth where it is retrieved by the Master, who uses it to open a portal that briefly allows Rassilon and other Time Lords to escape the Last Great Time War before the Doctor and, ultimately, the Master, foil their plans. Before this occurs, however, Rassilon undoes the "cloning" of the Master, returning the human race to normal, though they are soon faced with the spectacle of a giant planet appearing in the sky on a collision course; but this, too, is soon undone. (DW: The End of Time)
** A malfunction with the world's wi-fi systems is later blamed for causing mass hallucinations (a cover story concocted by Mr. Smith (DW: The End of Time, Part Two).
** Shortly after, Luke Smith is nearly run over by a car on Bannerman Road, but is rescued by the Doctor. (DW: The End of Time, Part Two)

Jack, his body slowly reconstituting itself, was held by Johnson, while Gwen went on the run from the British government, revealing to her husband Rhys she was pregnant. The children on Earth stopped again to say, "We are coming...tomorrow". Mr Dekker built a container for the 456 to specification, filled with unusual gases. Lois Habiba revealed to Gwen that John Frobisher was behind the death orders for Torchwood. Johnson sealed Jack in concrete, but Ianto arrived, releasing him. Jack and Ianto escaped with Rhys and Gwen. (TV: Children of Earth: Day Two)

(DW: Turn Left)
*Captain John Hart places bombs in an abandoned building where the Torchwood team are investigating. While they are unconscious, all except for Gwen experience flashbacks. (TW: Fragments)
*After regaining consciousness the Torchwood team try to stop John Hart. Later that night a series of alien attacks occur in Cardiff, including Weevils killing four senior Cardiff police officers, a Hoix let lose in a hospital where it is captured by Owen Harper, a group of men in cloaks haunt a building only to be shot dead by Toshiko Sato and Ianto Jones, and John Hart captures Jack Harkness and sets off several bombs in buildings across Cardiff. It is then revealed Jack's brother Gray is forcing John Hart to do his bidding. Gray unleashes all of the Weevils in the sewers on Cardiff, shoots Toshiko, who later dies of her wounds, and Owen is disintegrated by nuclear radiation following the actions of Gray and John Hart, who helps Captain Jack stop Gray. (TW: Exit Wounds)
The last two events took place between March 19th and the 2009 Dalek invasion of Earth, which took place in May. It's possible that these took place around roughly the same date Exit Wounds was originally broadcast.

Alternate timelines
The 456 ambassador materialised in the gassy container in Thames House. They demanded 10% of all of Earth's children. Clem revealed that Jack had been behind the handover in 1965, and Jack staid it was for the 456. (TV: Children of Earth: Day Three)
*The Year That Never Was: The Master rules Earth with an iron fist. During this time, the Doctor, physically aged, is kept captive aboard the UNIT airship the Valiant, along with Jack Harkness and most of Martha Jones' family. Meanwhile, Martha, following instruction given to her by the Doctor, spends the year travelling the world spreading stories and faith about the Doctor. Ultimately, the collected faith of the people of the world restores the Doctor, leading to the Master's defeat. Captain Jack destroys the Paradox machine, reversing time back to 2008. Afterwards, the Master is shot by his wife, Lucy Saxon, and, refusing to regenerate, apparently dies. (DW: Last of the Time Lords)
*Donna's World - After the Titanic fell to Earth on 25th December 2008, annihilating London and rendering most of southern England unlivable with nuclear radiation, Great Britain has become a police state. Londoners lucky enough to have survived are subject to forced relocations; Donna Noble's family is moved to Leeds. Rose Tyler works with the UNIT of this timeline to help Donna Noble restore the proper chain of events which, at one point, involves sending Donna back to 2007. (DW: Turn Left)

Real World
Jack continued to talk about the night he and others handed children over to the 456 in 1965. At Thames House, the 456 ambassador had one of the children of 1965 as part of its system, unaging. As negotiations failed, the government started to think of ways to hand over the 10%, which Lois recorded with Torchwood's Eye-5 contact lenses as incriminating evidence. The 456 killed Clem. Jack and Ianto faced the 456, but were also killed, along with the rest of Thames House once the 456 released the virus. Jack revived, upset over his loss. (TV: Children of Earth: Day Four)

January
The British government started sending the 10% to the 456, labelling it "inoculations". The ambassador revealed the children were to be used as drugs. The Prime Minister informed John Frobisher that his children would be among those handed over to the 456. Unable to cope with this, Frobisher killed his family and committed suicide. Gwen and Rhys tried to escape with as many children as they could. Jack used the wave the 456 had used to kill Clem the previous day to destroy the 456, but sacrificed his grandson Steven to set it up. Stricken with guilt over the death of his grandson, Jack left Cardiff and spent the next few months wandering the Earth. It is also the first episode (as opposed to telemovie) of the series to be filmed in part outside Europe since 1984. 2009 was a year.

Events

Dated events

January - May

On 20 January, Barack Obama was inaugurated as President of the United States, the first African-American in the position. (PROSE: Time Traveller's Diary)

One account, but not others, which suggested this time as 2008, placed 15 May 2009 as the start of the Mandragora Helix's attempted takeover of Earth through the MorganTech computer systems. (PROSE: Beautiful Chaos)

June - August

On 6 June, the Atraxi extradimensional prison break occurred. (PROSE: Time Traveller's Diary)

On 28 June, Stephen Hawking held a party for time travellers at Gonville & Caius College, but he only sent out invitations after the event. (PROSE: Time Traveller's Diary)

September - December

Members of the Stockbridge Preservation Society began to go missing. (COMIC: The Stockbridge Child)

Newspaper Ianto Jones picks up. Date reads: Wednesday September 2009 (TV: Children of Earth: Day Two)

The 456 ambassador materialised in the gassy container in Thames House. They demanded 10% of all of Earth's children. Clem revealed that Jack had been behind the handover in 1965, and Jack staid it was for the 456. (TV: Children of Earth: Day Three)

(TV: Children of Earth: Day Five)

On Halloween in 2009, the Gelth attempted to pass through a rift in space and time which had opened in Ratchett Abbey, Cheltenham, but were eventually stopped by the Tenth Doctor and Corynne Fletcher. (PROSE: Scared Stiff)

In mid-December, the Aurelia Festival was held in Stockbridge. The Tenth Doctor and new companion Majenta Pryce arrived to find themselves involved in an adventure with Maxwell Edison. (COMIC: The Stockbridge Child)

On the 12th of December, Brenda sent out a letter to the readers of the book series based upon herself and Effie, inviting them to visit her B&B in Whitby, North Yorkshire. (PROSE: Brenda's B&B)

On 25 December, the Tenth Doctor and his companion Heather McCrimmon visited the village of Stillmuir to celebrate Christmas with Heather's family. The celebrations were interrupted by three blue-skinned aliens who wanted to learn about Christmas. They transported the entire village away from Earth to a giant snow globe where they could observe the humans. The Doctor talked with the aliens and invited them to observe Christmas by attending the McCrimmon family's celebrations if they returned the village to Earth. The aliens agreed and spent Christmas night celebrating. (COMIC: A Merry Little Christmas)

By this year, Polly Wright worked in the City of Westminster. (AUDIO: The Three Companions)

Professor Egen, a time traveller from 1959, briefly stopped in 2009 during his first (and ultimately only) journey through time in his experimental time machine. He looked at a 21st century city full of skyscrapers, which looked "ultra-modern", as he had expected — but, precisely because he had expected it, found it underwhelming, prompting him to move on to the more distant future. (COMIC: Dr. Who's Time Tales)

A broken Filbik colour coder leaked a rainbow over a town in England, causing anyone who touched it to change colour and fall unconscious before being transported to a storage ship. When Bobby explained the mishap to the Filbik they politely agreed to return all of the samples taken by accident. (PROSE: The End of the Rainbow)

Gareth, head of the seismology unit of the UCMA taskforce, developed a system for accurately predicting earthquakes. Gareth's system was credited for saving the human race several times. (TV: Doctor Who)

Kate Maguire first encountered the Tenth Doctor. However, he knew that one day she would help him defend the Earth against an Auton invasion. (PROSE: Autonomy)

Contradicting other sources, one account placed this year as the time Torchwood discovered the skeleton of a Cardiff soldier from 1812 who died when his heart was ripped out. According to this account, Ianto, Owen Harper, and Toshiko Sato were still active in Torchwood. (TV: Greeks Bearing Gifts)

A half-alien, half-human girl named Freda was sent back from the future to escape persecution and came under the protection of Torchwood Three. (AUDIO: Asylum)

Torchwood Three discovered Torchwood India still existed and its members were preserving their own time in their headquarters by draining the life out of innocent civilians, with plans to roll back time to Britain's empire across the world. Torchwood Three defeated them and Torchwood India was frozen in time. (AUDIO: Golden Age)

Torchwood Three combatted a mysterious force that put people into coma-like trances after they answered the phone. (AUDIO: The Dead Line)

Captain Jack and Gwen Cooper searched for an alien heat-gun on Cardiff's Machen estate. While doing so, they inadvertently caused a parasitic alien baby to unlatch from its host, causing the host to kill herself and the baby. (PROSE: The Wrong Hands) When the baby's father discovered this, he sought revenge on Torchwood Three and infected Jack and Gwen with the Kagawa Virus. (PROSE: Virus)

Torchwood Three recovered a sentient book from Cardiff University Library, which had been stealing people's memories and converting them into stories. The book was indestructible, so to release its grasp on Nina Rogers Jack decided to send it back in time to 1899, where Emily Holroyd would secretly place it in the university library and so trap it in a time loop. (PROSE: Consequences)

Behind the scenes

While the 2011 audio stories The Devil and Miss Carew and Submission are ostensibly set not long before the third series of Torchwood from 2009, dialogue in The Devil and Miss Carew mentioning that Joanna Carew is 81 years old and born in 1930, and the events of Submission taking place more than 50 years after the successful return of the Trieste from the Mariana Trench in 1960, contradictorily suggest that they are set in their year of broadcast, 2011.
