Storm of the Sea Devils was the first story of the thirteenth series of The Fourth Doctor Adventures, produced by Big Finish Productions. It was written by David K Barnes and featured Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, Christopher Naylor as Harry Sullivan and Eleanor Crooks as Naomi Cross.
Publisher's summary[[edit] | [edit source]]
Surgeon Lieutenant Harry Sullivan is supposed to be on holiday. But his arrival in Calcutta is intercepted by someone from the local branch of UNIT - a staff member called Naomi Cross.
A businessman in the area has mysteriously cancelled the opening of his new hotel...and local villagers have reported sightings of 'devils' in the swamps. Devils that look very familiar from the UNIT files...
The businessman requires medical aid so UNIT have decided to send him a doctor. Unfortunately, when Harry and Naomi arrive on site they find a different Doctor has got there ahead of them...And that's just the start of their troubles.
Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]
Part one[[edit] | [edit source]]
Harry lands in Calcutta for a holiday and is met at the airport by Naomi, who gives security a letter from UNIT when he is unable to produce his passport and takes him to headquarters. There, Captain Sharma tells him about Ramesh Kamal, a wealthy man residing with his wife, Amita, in an unopened hotel in the swamps near which a Sea Devil has been spotted by a villager. As UNIT's medics are busy on the Nepalese border, Harry agrees to go to the hotel with Naomi in answer to an intercepted request from Kamal for a doctor so that they might investigate. They travel there by boat, almost being attacked by Kamal's crocodiles on the way, and are taken by Haldar and his armed guards to meet with the Kamals, who accuse them of lying about their identities as a doctor has already arrived: the Doctor.
The Doctor gives away Harry's deception and is overheard by Haldar telling him and Naomi that he had not answered the call, but simply went along with it. Despite this, Kamal gets Harry to give a second opinion on the condition of injured anthropologist Professor Sanjay Billimoria, whose injuries seem to have been inflicted by a powerful clawed creature with its hands and who is suffering from blood poisoning. The Doctor is locked up whilst Harry and Naomi are put to work tending to Sanjay, but he escapes using his sonic screwdriver and finds Naomi looking around the hotel in search of the creature which Sanjay says is still in the building. They enter a locked swimming pool when they hear Haldar looking around and are attacked by a Sea Devil inside.
Part two[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Doctor and Naomi realise that the Sea Devil, Shorak, is chained up and start to release her, but Kamal finds them and confiscates the sonic screwdriver. Kamal has Haldar escort Naomi back to assist Harry and takes the Doctor for a walk around the grounds, explaining that he has been searching for Sea Devils and sedated Shorak after finding her standing over the body of his doctor. He then hired Sanjay to communicate with her, but she refused to speak until she met the Doctor and Naomi and was shown compassion. Once Harry completes his operation, he finds Amita, whom she tried to talk to about their shared loneliness, and is afterwards warned by Kamal not to speak with her unattended again.
The recovering Sanjay, who is no longer essential to Kamal's plans now that the Doctor has proven capable of getting a response from Shorak, tells the Doctor and Naomi that Shorak attacked him when he threatened her with a gun out of frustration. At dinner, Kamal reveals that he now knows that Harry and Naomi work for UNIT, that he is holding an auction to sell Shorak and that he wants the Doctor to locate the rest of her colony so that they might also be sold. Amita protests these plans and is terrified to see another Sea Devil at the window. The Doctor goes outside with Kamal and his security team to follow them and leaves Harry and Naomi behind with Amita, but Naomi goes out as well and is captured by the Sea Devil when she mentions Shorak. He carries her into the water as she calls out for the Doctor and Harry.
Part three[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Doctor and Kamal return to the hotel unsuccessful and learn that Naomi is missing, but Kamal refuses to allow the Doctor or Harry to go looking for her and instead sends the Doctor to speak with Shorak. The Doctor releases her from her chains and learns that she was attempting to revive Sanjay from injuries inflicted by a crocodile and that she does not advocate for war against humanity, instead waiting for the effects of global warming. She believes that the other Sea Devil, however, is Taurix, who does not hold the same views. Harry is released by Amita and joins the Doctor and Shorak, fleeing when the alarm is raised.
Naomi wakes up in the Sea Devil colony, having avoided drowning thanks to a respirator, and informs the Sea Devils of Shorak's location and status. He initially rejects her offer of help in freeing Shorak peacefully, but agrees to trade the two of them to avoid putting Shorak in danger. Taurix sends the Sea Devils to the surface to bring the Doctor and Shorak to the colony, which they do before Haldar can stop them from escaping. Shorak is grazed by a bullet, however, and agrees with Taurix once they are reunited that the humans cannot be trusted and must be attacked. Harry is captured by Kamal's men before and Kamal feeds Sanjay to the crocodiles to threaten Harry into telling him the location of the colony, believing that UNIT are aware of its location.
Part four[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Sea Devils attack Kamal and his men and Harry and Amita escape into the hotel kitchens with the staff. Although Haldar and his men are wiped out, Kamal survives the attack and begs to be let into the kitchens to take refuge as Taurix advances to tear him apart. Harry and Amita let Kamal in and they use a fire extinguisher to hold Taurix back so that they can rebuild their barricade. The group begin to arm themselves, but Amita suggests that they instead surrender and Harry has everyone disarm once Taurix gets inside. Taurix does not believe that Kamal's regret is genuine and Harry volunteers his own life in exchange for Kamal's and everyone else's.
Shorak locks the Doctor and Naomi in a cage where Naomi is frustrated with the Doctor's resignation and insists that they attempt to make peace despite his failed attempts in the past, after which the Doctor reveals that he was tricking her into making such declarations in front of a camera for Shorak to hear. Now convinced that peace is possible, Shorak releases the two of them and she and the Doctor interrupt Taurix before he can kill the humans; Shorak forgives everyone aside from Kamal and convinces Taurix that peace is possible, but Kamal holds a knife to Amita's throat and escapes. Naomi saves Amita, who commands the crocodiles to eat Kamal with a click of her fingers despite the Doctor shouting at her not to.
At UNIT, Captain Sharma informs Harry and Naomi that Amita will be exonerated of any charges and is introduced by the Doctor to Shorak. The TARDIS is salvaged from the riverbed by the Sea Devils, whose home will now be protected by UNIT, and the Doctor prepares to depart, inviting Harry to join him for a trip. He declines, but Naomi is eager to see inside the ship and the Doctor welcomes them both inside, promising Harry the holiday he had come to Calcutta for.
