The Doctor (particularly in his seventh incarnation) occasionally used Smithwood Manor on Allen Road in Kent as a base of operations. It was often referred to simply as "the house on Allen Road" by the Doctor's companions.

History[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Second Doctor once expressed interest in buying a house in Kent to use as a home whenever he came to Earth. (PROSE: Invasion of the Cat-People)

20th century[[edit] | [edit source]]

Bernice Summerfield briefly visited the house to pick up money, a ration book, and identity papers on 6 March, 1941. One wardrobe was full of fur coats, and a shoebox full of electrical equipment included a gold brooch and a belt; otherwise, the house was empty of clothes. She left a note asking any Doctor to rescue her. (PROSE: Just War)

In 1958, the Seventh Doctor allowed Mikey and Dennis to live at the house. (PROSE: Bad Therapy)

During the Third Doctor's exile on Earth, as the Eighth Doctor later told Sam Jones, he lived in a dilapidated Victorian house in Kent and was called on occasionally by his secret-service contacts. (PROSE: The Scarlet Empress) While visiting the Doctor's cottage in 1973, Jo Grant recalled that she had once visited the house in Kent. (PROSE: Verdigris)

Not long after Jo Grant's departure, the Third Doctor invited the Brigadier to spend Christmas Eve together at Smithwood Manor. (PROSE: Faithful Friends: Part 1)

In the 1980s, the Eighth Doctor raised his daughter Miranda in the house, keeping his recovering TARDIS in the front garden. They were once visited by Iris Wildthyme. (PROSE: Father Time)

Around 1987, a boar farm next to the Doctor's house in Kent was damaged by a massive storm; some of the boars escaped to the Doctor's house, and he taught them how to speak. This led to the repopulation of boars in England and, eventually, the evolution of the Tuskens. (PROSE: Mad Dogs and Englishmen)

In the early 1990s, the Seventh Doctor was using the house concurrently with 107 Baker Street. He brought Mags to Allen Road to recover from the Sin Eater. (AUDIO: An Alien Werewolf in London)

Sometime before 1996, (PROSE: Return of the Living Dad) an incarnation of the Doctor travelling with Melanie Bush had had the house on Allen Road repainted. With the house unusable, the Doctor bought a beach house in Sydney. (PROSE: SLEEPY)

Kadiatu Lethbridge-Stewart dropped off Bernice Summerfield at this house in 1997 to wait for the Seventh Doctor, but he did not return for her until after he had regenerated into his eighth body, which surprised her. (PROSE: The Dying Days)

21st century[[edit] | [edit source]]

The graffitied Allen Road sign. (COMIC: Ravens)

Circa 2009, the Seventh Doctor dropped by the house while Ace went on a mission for him in Turkey. (COMIC: Ravens) Superstition and irrationality swept over the western world. Believers in the paranormal and occult had begun to notice the Doctor's presence in the house. Some thought of him as a supernatural being or magician, others an extraterrestrial, and graffiti on the street sign that made it read ALIEN ROAD indicated this. (PROSE: Cat's Cradle: Warhead, COMIC: Ravens) Here, the Doctor and Ace decanted the body of Vincent Wheaton out of suspended animation. (PROSE: Cat's Cradle: Warhead)

By 2014, the Doctor had several cars there, including a Mazda and Mercedes. There were also several pieces of technology, including a communications screen in the garage. The house also had a wine cellar. There were apple trees in the orchard behind the house. The house has a computer with a voice interface which could sound like Cary Grant, and the front gate had a sign that read SMITHWOOD MANOR / NO TRESPASSING, with graffiti added saying BEWARE OF THE GOD. There was an advanced security system linked to a scale model of the house and grounds on the sideboard in the breakfast room, which contained a surveillance system. The house also had security cameras that could be viewed from the television set in the sitting room. A group of kids had recently broken into the grounds, leaving used needles and graffiti in the fountain in front of the house. (PROSE: Warlock)

Around 2030, the Seventh Doctor used his house as a base of operations whilst tracking various psychic phenomena on Earth as well as the last vestiges of Warlock. At this time the library contains an old Apple Mac computer, a billiard table, a silk Biedermyer sofa, two floral armchairs, the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and a suspended animation cylinder containing the body of the dog Jack. (PROSE: Warchild)

22nd century[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Seventh Doctor used his house as a base of operations in the early 22nd century while investigating the Solar Transit System. (PROSE: Transit)

30th century[[edit] | [edit source]]

An unspecified incarnation of the Doctor from an alternate timeline settled down in the house and was visited by Simon Frederson and Lady Genevieve ap Gwalchmai in 2982. (PROSE: So Vile a Sin)

Undated events[[edit] | [edit source]]

At one time, a squad of Judoon raided the house to retrieve the Eye of Akasha. The Fifth Doctor, who was travelling with Tegan Jovanka and Vislor Turlough, swapped the Eye for a cricket ball. (COMIC: The Forgotten)

Garpol stole the house for his Heritage Centre on Ararax XIV. The Seventh Doctor, Ace, and Bernice discovered it there, and Garpol forced them to live in the house and act as a family. However, the Doctor used the snow globe to create a dimensionally transcendent corridor between the house's wine cellar and the TARDIS, and they escaped. (PROSE: Question Mark Pyjamas)

Following an encounter on the planet Zamper, the Seventh Doctor took Bernice, Roz Forrester and Chris Cwej to his house to recover from their injuries. (PROSE: Zamper)

Miscellaneous information[[edit] | [edit source]]

A photo of the Doctor in Tibet during his second incarnation hung on the walls. (COMIC: Fellow Travellers)

On the mantle was a snow globe that contained a tiny model of the house. (PROSE: Question Mark Pyjamas)

Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]

The house on Allen Road first appeared in the Doctor Who Magazine comic story Fellow Travellers, which took place in an unspecified year.
