The Exterminator series of Doctor Who: Battles in Time were the original set.
The cards saw a twelve-week trial run in Wales in spring 2006, with the first 85 cards of the exterminator set being the only ones available during the trial. All of these cards are from the first series of the revival era, with the first in the set being a preview of next year's 10th Doctor.
Overview
The nationwide release of this set was announced in a press release from GE Fabbri Ltd. on 7 June 2006,[1] with the launch date confirmed on 12 September 2006.[2]
They launched later in September 2006 with a special card mounted magazine issue which included four packs of trading cards. Additional packs were also available to purchase separately.
The Exterminator series consisted of a 275 cards, being numbered from 001 to 275 featuring graphics from Series One and Two of the television series. (Each card also carried its particular set numbering in the bottom right corner).
The Exterminator series consisted of:
- 231 (C) Common cards (8 in every pack)
- 28 (R) Rare cards (1 in every pack)
- 10 (SR) Super-Rare cards (1 in every 6 packs)
- 6 (UR) Ultra-Rare cards (1 in every 24 packs)
- 1 Golden Ticket card (1 in every 1000 packs)
Seven non-character cards also required the use of an unnumbered "Psychic Paper" card to read them. This card was included unpacked with the first issue of the Battles in Time magazine, and could also be found in regular packs of Exterminator cards. The Psychic Paper card had a window of red cellophane that allowed the scrambled text to be read clearly. This gimmick was discontinued part-way through the Exterminator run and was never continued in future sets. The seven cards with a coded message also had an uncoded variant.
The much sought after "Golden Ticket" was of a thicker, gold foiled and unnumbered card.
