The Crimean War was a conflict fought between the Russian Empire and the British Empire and its allies, the French and the Turks. (TV: The Evil of the Daleks)

On 25 October 1854, a commonly known part of the War occurred called the "Charge of the Light Brigade," in which light-calvary were accidentally made to attack artillery and were killed outright. Agonal, disguised as an officer, actually caused this so he could feed on and enjoy the agony and death. (PROSE: Blood Harvest) The Doctor was present at the Charge of the Light Brigade. Circa the 1970s, the Third Doctor claimed to Robbins that he was wounded in the leg in Crimea. He quickly changed his story to say it was Gallipoli, and then El Alamein, before questioning if it mattered. (TV: The Sea Devils)

Arthur Terrall fought in the war. When asked by Jamie McCrimmon about Terrall's erratic behavior, she said that she had heard Terrall had been wounded in the war. Dawson's uncle had been killed at the Battle of Inkerman on 5 November of that year. (TV: The Evil of the Daleks)

Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, who later became famous as the author of War and Peace, served as an envoy to the Russian Army during the Crimean War. On 11 November 1913, an elderly veteran of the Crimean War stood outside the entrance to the village hall in Farringham, Herefordshire where Joan Redfern and John Smith were attending a dance. Smith gave a donation to the Veterans of the Crimea, a charity for the by then aged survivors of the war. The veteran was later vapourised by Son of Mine. Once the Tenth Doctor regained his Time Lord personality, he exacted judgement on Son of Mine and the Family of Blood for this and other senseless killings with everlasting punishments.
