The Short Briefing Sergeant's Tale was the fifth story in The Book of the Enemy. It was written by the anthology's editor, Simon Bucher-Jones.

The story was accompanied by a briefing discussing the importance of humour during wartime among the Humanic Cultures and the Great Houses. This was also written by Simon Bucher-Jones, though it was credited to Captain Robert Scarratt.
