Blood Feud was the eighth story in The Boulevard: Volume Two.
Summary[[edit] | [edit source]]
Rhino Sasaki fought, trying her best to stave off the overwhelming tide of troops. But it was no use. The Thirteen-Day Republic had fallen, betrayed by Cousin Octavia and the Red Burial. Even still, she fought on, determined to take out any members of the Faction she came across. She was a professional wrestler after all. Ultimately she too falls, overwhelmed by sheer numbers, and sinks into darkness.
Rhino comes to, being carted with the rest of the prisoners in front of Octavia, who taunts them with their failure. As Octavia stalks past Rhino, Rhino condemns her, mocks her for having the gaul to criticize them when she has her best friend, Anastasia's blood still on her hands. Octavia strikes Rhino, drawing blood. A ritual has been performed, under the laws of pro wrestling. The two are now entangled, caught in a blood feud. And Rhino will find Octavia and set it right, have her satisfaction, no matter the cost.
The 26th of October, 1917. Well, no, the Boulevard. A constant loop of the October Revolution, always ending on November 7th and starting yet again on the 26th. This is where Rhino has been cursed to spend her eternal punishment, living out her days futilely trying to change events, to plead with Lenin, to assassinate Stalin, nothing changes. The loop always restarts, she always finds herself in the same place, burdened with knowledge of the failures of revolution. The cruelest of ironies for a revolutionary.
As Rhino sits in a cafe, Maria Spiridonova approaches her. Or someone who looks like Spiridonova, for Spiridonova is across town, and has been in every iteration of this loop. The figure introduces themselves as Mother Pierson and offers to break Rhino out. Octavia has become too influential in the time since the rebellion, and is looking to be even moreso if she's successful in her upcoming task, discovering a powerful artefact in China. There's rumors she's to be promoted to Mother, an idea that Pierson finds distasteful. If Rhino takes care of Octavia, currently in the Stacks, she'll be let out. Unofficially, of course. Rhino leaps at the opportunity.
Over the next few days, the Eleven-Day Empire slowly dissolves into a stew of paranoia and rumor, Rhino stirring up innuendo and fear to hide her accessing the Stacks. Meanwhile, Pierson begins to find herself forgetting why she cared so much about Octavia in the first place, but pushes the issue from her mind.
Rhino enters the Stacks. She reaches out, searching for Octavia, using their connection, and bit by bit draws closer, walking through station after station, at last finding Octavia, isolated and alone, reading some old records. Rhino insists that Octavia fight her, challenges her, Octavia failing to recognize to her. Rhino charges, putting Octavia on the back foot. But even as Octavia is out of practice, it's no use, Rhino just doesn't have what it takes. Octavia takes her out, and darkness falls once more.
The 27th of October, 1917. Back in the Boulevard. Rhino goes through the motions of her day, when another member of Faction Paradox enters, Father Everett, in the guise of Leon Trotsky. He asks her about her history with Cousin Octavia. Rhino smiles.
