The Hoix were a race of omnivorous humanoids.

Biology

The Hoix, as mentioned, were a humanoid race. They were slightly shorter than the average Human and had brown skin, sharp teeth and exposed gums.

Files by the Torchwood Institute suggested that the Hoix lived to eat, and one Hoix specimen apparently liked to eat everything. Owen Harper noted how unintelligent they appeared to be. (TW: Exit Wounds) The Doctor was aware of this and also of what effects various chemicals had on the Hoix. (DW: Love & Monsters)

History

Torchwood Institute have encountered the Hoix before. In one instance, one was found in Barry, where it had broken into a restaurant. (TW: Exit Wounds) On another occasion, Jack Harkness was chased by a Hoix into the Sidings. (TWN: The Twilight Streets)

In the summer of 2007, a Hoix was encountered by Elton Pope. Pope, in search of the Doctor, had managed to locate the Doctor's TARDIS. Whilst following voices into an abandoned warehouse, Elton startled the Hoix, who attempted to attack him. The Doctor was able to distract the Hoix with a piece of raw meat and Rose Tyler threw a bucket of liquid at the Hoix. Unfortunately, this was the wrong bucket, which just made the Hoix angry. Rose and the Doctor were then chased by the Hoix until Rose was able to find the correct bucket. (DW: Love & Monsters)

The Vandrogonite Visualiser that was dug up in Rhiwbina in October 2008 had records of the Hoix. When Gareth Portland created MonstaQuest, he used the Hoix as several of the characters, naming them "Maymer" and "Bludgeon Beast". One was accidentally summoned into the Achenbrite headquarters along with two Chantri Golems, where it killed the members before they could respond. It was later killed by Jennifer Portland, who flooded the building with kolokine-7. (TWN: Pack Animals)

In 2009, a Hoix came through the Cardiff rift into St. Helen's Hospital, Cardiff. A doctor trapped it but ultimately Owen Harper had to lure it out and tranquillise it. (TW: Exit Wounds)

At some point in their history, the Hoix joined The Alliance formed to imprison The Doctor in the Pandorica in order to save the Universe, they arrived at Stonehenge, 102 A.D. along with the rest of the Alliance and locked the Doctor in the Pandorica. (DW: The Pandorica Opens)

Given their unintelligent but vicious nature, it is likely that the Hoix is a servant or footsoldier of one of the other races in that particular diplomatic alliance.

Behind the scenes

  • There has been some confusion over whether 'Hoix' was the name of the individual creature appearing in Love & Monsters, or of its species. Doctor Who Top Trumps suggested it was the species' name, although this information is non-canonical. In Exit Wounds, Owen Harper talks about it in a manner that lays the matter to rest - Hoix is the name of the species.
