King Lear was the titular character of William Shakespeare's play King Lear.

Lear was portrayed by Richard Burbage in the debut performance of the play. The First Doctor, who attended this showing, later reflected that Burbage was a "good actor" but "rubbish at portraying old men crushed by the delicious uncertainties of life". (PROSE: Byzantium!
