Individual discs could become scratched, which would result in the needle getting "stuck in the groove", resulting in short sections of a song being played over and over again in a loop. At least one of the Doctor's favourite records, "In a Dream," had a definite scratch in it, a matter of concern for both the Seventh and Eighth Doctors.
