- 22 September - Tegan Jovanka, companion of the Fourth and Fifth Doctors, was born. (AUDIO: The Gathering)
- 9 December - Coronation Street debuted on television on Earth. Several cast members of this long-running series were destined to be killed by the Vore (PROSE: The Gallifrey Chronicles) and the Sixth Doctor once had a strange dream involving the series (PROSE: Christmas Special).

- 11 - Actor Robert Glenister was born.
- 1 April - Actor Michael Praed was born.
- 16 - Actor Ricco Ross was born.
- 19 - Actor Mark Greenstreet was born.
- Donald Wilson, head of Serial Drama for the British Broadcasting Corporation, established the Monitoring Group, also known as the Survey Group, whose job was to keep the BBC informed about current trends in various genres of entertainment. In 1962, a report on science fiction programming possibilities by this body led to the creation of Doctor Who.

- 20 - Actor Johnathon Morris was born.
- 09 - Actor Hugh Grant was born.
- 10 - Police Surgeon debuted on ITV in Britain. It was one of the first British TV series created by Sydney Newman, who later created Doctor Who. It ran until 3 December 1960 and its star, Ian Hendry, immediately moved to another Newman creation, The Avengers.
- 29 - Actor Howard Cooke was born.
- 11 - Actor Nicola Bryant was born.
- 09 - Coronation Street debuted on UK television. Still in production in 2013, it became the longest-running UK drama TV series of all time and one of the few shows to surpass Doctor Who in longevity. Many Doctor Who cast members, before and after their involvement in Who, appeared on the series over the decades. The series' popularity in the ratings was considered a contributing factor in the cancellation of Doctor Who in 1989, after it had been scheduled against the still-popular programme.
