List of production codes
Doctor Who production codes do not always follow air dates. Use of production codes on the BBC Wales series ceased with the 2011 Christmas special, The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe.
TV story production codes
Notes
Most First Doctor serials' production codes feature only one letter (with the exception of TV: The Savages, TV: The War Machines, TV: The Smugglers and TV: The Tenth Planet). All Second Doctor serials' production codes feature two letters and all Third Doctor serials' production codes feature three letters. The Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Doctors all have serial production codes that feature their incarnation's number. For example the Fourth Doctor serial TV: Robot has the production code '4A', the Fifth Doctor serial TV: Four to Doomsday has the production code '5W', the Sixth Doctor serial TV: The Twin Dilemma has the production code '6S', and the Seventh Doctor serial TV: Time and the Rani has the production code '7D'. It is unclear if all of these are on purpose or coincidental based opun the practice of using all the letter of the alphabet, disincluding 'I' and 'O' (likely as to not be confused with lowercase 'L' and uppercase 'Q', respectively), and when Z was reached starting from A again and adding another letter, A, then AA, then AAA, then 4A and so on.
A similar thing is present in the new series production codes, with the Ninth Doctor episode TV: The Empty Child having the production code '1.9', The Tenth Doctor episode TV: Love & Monsters having the production code '2.10' and the Eleventh Doctor episode TV: The Lodger having the production code '1.11', though being production codes for single episodes in a series, rather than an entire serial, these are very likely coincidental.
Production codes have one letter only during the First Doctor's run, three letters only during the Third Doctor's run as and the same is true of the Fourth Doctor's run, as only serials with him as the main incarnation start with the number '4'. All other classic series incarnations either share their number/number of letters in the production codes with another incarnation, the Second Doctor shares two-letter production codes with the First Doctor and both the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Doctors appear as the main incarnation in serials whose starting number is one ahead of their incarnation's number.
O was used for the production codes 'OO' and 'OOO'. Production code 'VVV' was skipped despite 'V', 'VV', '4V' and so on, being used

Big Finish introduced their own system of production codes. Within a given audio series, the production code typically consisted of a prefix common to the whole series, followed by a number. In the list below, only the prefixes are given with numbers represented by xxx. For series that already ended their run, all possible values for xxx are stated. Production code prefixes are listed alphabetically:
