Dr Sally Armstrong followed instructions given to her for when the Doctor arrived and activated a time machine which brought the Daleks to 1972. In an aborted timeline where WOTAN was not defeated by the First Doctor, Louise Bamford, a test subject in a 2006 time travel experiment, arrived in Whitechapel on 18 October. However, the trip was a one way journey and Bamford became stuck in 1972.
In a timeline branching off of the one where WOTAN's attack was successful, the First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, and Susan Foreman came to 1972 with Griffiths to get back their TARDIS after it was sent back in time by the 2006 time experiments. With the help of a version of Ian from an alternate timeline, they got it out of the River Thames and continued with their travels.
