London, November 1605. The TARDIS materialises at a crucial moment in British history. While Ian and Barbara set off for the Globe Theatre, Vicki accompanies the First Doctor on a mysterious mission to the court of King James.
What connects the King's advisor Robert Cecil with the sinister hooded figure known only as 'the Spaniard'? Why is the Doctor so anxious to observe the translation of the Bible? And could there be some dastardly plot brewing in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament?
As a history teacher, Barbara thinks she knows what to expect when she encounters a man called Guy Fawkes. But she is in for a very unpleasant surprise.

- In the 25th century, Lynda La Plante is much more highly regarded than William Shakespeare.
- Vicki is under the mistaken impression that Trafalgar Square existed in 1605. When the Doctor mentioned the Battle of Trafalgar would not be fought until 1805, she assumed that the battle had taken place in Trafalgar Square itself.
- King James I jokingly theatrens to throw Vicki into the Tower of London.
- The Doctor comments that he was considered "quite a looker" in his day.

- The Doctor refers to the Menoptera (DW: The Web Planet) and the Venusians (MA: Venusian Lullaby).
- Barbara mentions the Great Fire of London in 1666. Later in the Doctor's personal timeline, his fifth incarnation played a major role in causing the fire. Ironically, the Fourth Doctor, arriving shortly before his future self's departure, was wrongly accused of starting the fire only hours later.
