Publisher's summary[[edit]]

With few people left to trust, and with assassins on their tail, Kate and Osgood race to UNIT Command in Geneva. Will General Avery be able to help them?

But when death follows UNIT all the way from the English countryside to the snowy slopes of the Alps, Captain Carter finds himself in a race against time.

As the body count rises, Kate struggles to separate friend from foe, danger circles Osgood ever closer, and, high in the mountains, Josh comes face to face with the enemy...

Plot[[edit]]

Leaving Josh behind to look into the explosion at King Henry's University and the attack which ended with Jay Roy's sacrifice, Kate and Osgood fly to Geneva to ask General Grant Avery for assistance in dealing with the leak in the British government. Corporal Anna Burges drives Josh to the Tower of London, but the car is attacked on the way and, after getting out of the wreck, Anna is murdered and Josh gives chase. Whilst he is distracted, Anna's body removed.

In Geneva, General Avery agrees to put together a team to investigate any links between Lyme and the government and asks that Kate and Osgood remain in order to brief them; after their meeting, General Grant makes a secure phone call and says that they have a problem.

Sam stops by Kate's office in the hopes of seeing her before heading to Johannesburg and speaks with Josh, suggesting that Anna was removed from the car so that the killers could get information from her. Although Josh is initially sceptical given that she was only a driver, he realises that she knew where Osgood was going and calls Kate, who has General Avery send soldiers to collect Osgood from a gallery.

Osgood notices Dokan staring at her and is captured by him and his Tengobushi, who demand to know the whereabouts of an energy cell. She escapes by releasing a gas from her inhaler and regroups with UNIT. At HQ, General Avery takes Kate to speak with Sir Peter Latcham, whom she now believes could be the leak in the government, but interrupts their meeting after two people are found murdered on Mont Salève in France. Osgood examines the bodies and finds scorch marks on their torsos and holes in their head through which their brains were dissolved. Kate and General Avery watch footage of the murders from a paraglider's helmet camera.

On her way back to Geneva Base on the cable car, Osgood is followed by a paragliding Tengobushi who kills the soldiers accompanying her. She is saved by Josh, but the assassin vapourises himself to keep himself from being captured. Kate uncovers the Tengobushi's invisible spacecraft, after which the Tengobushi attack and take General Avery prisoner. Dokan explains that he is a Kamishi of a higher caste, served by the lesser Tengobushi, and has come to reclaim a Kamishi energy cell which, based on General Avery's memories, he comes to believe is held at the Tower of London.

Kate and Osgood are captured after using themselves as bait but are now deemed surplus to requirements. Josh and his men break through the ship's energy field, drawing away the Tengobushi and allowing Kate and Osgood to find the unconscious General Avery. They escape the ship before it takes off and head back to London with Josh whilst the General is assassinated on the way back to headquarters. The UNIT aeroplane is attacked by the Tengobushi and heads on a collision course.
