An android, sometimes called just "droid" for short, was a humanoid robot or, as the Tenth Doctor once explained to Martha Jones, a "humanoid automaton". (PROSE: The Last Dodo) Examples included Kamelion (in his natural form) (TV: The King's Demons) and the K1 robot. (TV: Robot)

"Android" came from Greek and meant "a machine that's like a man". A machine that was like a woman was also known as a gynoid. (PROSE: Christmas on a Rational Planet) The Twelfth Doctor noted droids always spoke without abbreviating words. (TV: Deep Breath)

A Raston Warrior Robot was known by the Third Doctor as "the most perfect killing machine ever devised". (TV: The Five Doctors)

The Daleks used an android duplicate of the First Doctor in their attempt to assassinate him and his companions. (TV: The Chase)

Osirans used servitor robots which appeared in the form of mummies. (TV: Pyramids of Mars)

Sandminer robots supported human colonists on Kaldor. (TV: The Robots of Death)

Taran androids were intricate androids which looked exactly like the human colonists of Tara. (TV: The Androids of Tara)

The android Kamelion (TV: Planet of Fire)

Kamelion was a shapeshifting android. (TV: The King's Demons) According to one account, the Kamelions were created by the Gelsandorans (PROSE: The Ultimate Treasure) as weapons of war during their invasion of the planet Xeriphas before leaving. (PROSE: The Crystal Bucephalus) According to another account, the Kamelions were created by the Kamille as servants to experience physical interaction through following the loss of their physical form. On Androzani Minor, android rebels were used by Sharaz Jek for his guerrilla efforts, including replicas such as Salateen. (TV: The Caves of Androzani)

In the 24th century of a Federation universe, Data was an android, created by Dr Soong, who served as an officer of the Starfleet of the United Federation of Planets. (COMIC: Assimilation²)

By the early 26th century, androids were commonplace in Earth Empire society, but were viewed as an under-class. The Orion androids finally became fed up with the situation and moved en masse to the relatively unused Orion System. They set up their own government, with the stipulation that humans living in the system could stay if they accepted android rule. The Earth Empire considered this a violation of sentient rights, and attacked, starting the Orion War. The Daleks were engaged in a war against a race of androids known as the Movellans. (TV: Destiny of the Daleks, The Pilot) By one account, the Movellans had been built in the image of SSS anti-Dalek android Mark Seven, suffering from amnesia and having remade himself as the First Movellan.
