The Stuarts were a royal family who ruled Scotland by the 15th century. They also ruled England in the 17th and early 18th centuries, succeeding the Tudor dynasty.

James VI of Scotland was a Stuart. He became known as James I in England after he succeeded Queen Elizabeth I, the last ruler of the Tudor dynasty. He continued promoting her Protestant religion. In 1605, the Gunpowder Plot was an attempt to kill James and his sons Charles and Henry, and install his daughter, Princess Elizabeth, as a Catholic monarch. (GAME: The Gunpowder Plot)
Charles I succeeded James I and IV in 1625. For eleven years he ruled without regard to Parliament, which led to the English Civil War.
