History

When Sabbath was first appointed Godfather of the Military Wing, he conducted a ritual to prevent enemies of the Faction from tampering with his timeline. With the help of Morlock, Sabbath went back in time killing his ancestors in a strict ritual order. Starting with his mother, Sabbath began murdering a relative from each generation of his family.

Sabbath and Morlock ran into a bit of trouble when they arrived to kill Sabbath great-grandmother Fiora Venn in 1899 only to find that she was already pregnant with Sabbath's grandfather. To kill his grandfather a second time would break the rules of the ritual, so Sabbath stabbed Venn's niece Emma James instead. (AUDIO: Movers, A Labyrinth of Histories)

When the Seventy-Ninth Sontaran Assault Corps invaded the Eleven-Day Empire, Sabbath mobilised an armada of flying machines to board the Sontaran Warship. Everyone with flight training was ordered to join the armada, including Cousins Eliza and Justine. While Sabbath went with the boarding party to massacre Sontarans, he sent his elite troops to Quelch so she could try to bond Grandfather Paradox's shadow with one of them. (AUDIO: The Eleven Day Empire) Ultimately, all of Sabbath's attempts at resistance were useless and the Eleven-Day Empire and everyone inside it were swallowed by Lolita. (AUDIO: The Shadow Play) However, in Michael Brookhaven's film Mujun: The Ghost Kingdom, "Baron Nichiyobi" was one of the three survivors of Lady Wakai's destruction of the Ghost Kingdom. In the City of the Saved, Sabbath was affiliated with the Faction's Rump Parliament. During the City of the Saved Civil War, he took Lo's place in the Parliament. (PROSE: A Hundred Words from a Civil War)

Behind the scenes

• Two characters named Sabbath appear in The Faction Paradox Protocols: Godfather Sabbath and Sabbath Dei. Lawrence Miles said that these two Sabbaths were two entirely separate individuals, and his intent was "to play on the convention that people in the same series never coincidentally have the same name." Had The Faction Paradox Protocols continued, Miles planned to show the two Sabbaths meeting, suggesting that Godfather Sabbath indeed survived the Empire's destruction.
