Alcohol

The Third Doctor enjoys some wine. (DW: Day of the Daleks)

Alcohol was ethanol diluted into a drink with an inebriating effect. It was consumed, used, seen and even occasionally manufactured by the Doctor, his companions and various other individuals.

Alcohol in general

Different species had different reactions to alcohol. Humans and Threllips were known to get drunk after drinking too much alcohol. (BFA: Living Legend) The various species of Sentarion had a stronger resistance to alchol than humans. (NA: Shakedown) Gallifreyans were more resistant yet. They could easily shrug off the effects of alcohol when they needed to. (PDA: The Quantum Archangel, MA: The Sorcerer's Apprentice, DW: The Girl in the Fireplace) As with humans, however, excessive consumption could produce a hangover. (BBCR: Slipback) Ginger beer would reduce their ability to tolerate alcohol. (BFA: The Kingmaker)

Some cultures were opposed to the drinking of alcohol. In the early 20th century, there was a prohibition of alcohol in America. (TW: Immortal Sins, NA: Blood Harvest) In a parallel universe, alcohol was banned in 21st century Great Britain, though the law was so poorly enforced that bootleg liquor was served at a party attended by the President of Great Britain. (DW: Rise of the Cybermen) The Saraani religion forbade the drinking of alcohol. (BNA: Dry Pilgrimage) The various species of Sentarion were opposed to the drinking of alcohol, though they had no problems with aliens doing so and even made Rekkar themselves. (NA: Shakedown) Alpha Centaurans never drank alcohol and didn't see the appeal of it. (MA: The Dark Path)

Wine

Wine was a drink made from pressed fruit, usually some form of grape. It was commonly found on Earth.

• Mehendri Solon gave the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith some red wine when they were in his house on Karn. (DW: The Brain of Morbius)
• The Fourth Doctor described 1979 as more of a "table wine" of a year, while in Paris. (DW: City of Death)
• The Fourth Doctor and Romana drank red wine while celebrating a victory over the King Vampire. They later drank a wine of lower quality in the House of Zarn. The Eighth Doctor also drank after saving the Fourth's life. (EDA: The Eight Doctors)
• While in the past of the Gateway, The Fourth Doctor ate and drank wine with Biroc and other Tharils. He also used the idea of overfilling one of the Tharils' goblets with wine to illustrate a point. (DW: Warriors' Gate)
• According to the reminiscence of the Sixth Doctor, Azmael and the Fourth Doctor drank extensively one night near a fountain. (DW: The Twin Dilemma)
• The Seventh Doctor ordered champagne and wine while posing as a Reichsinspektor General in an alternate timeline. (NA: Timewyrm: Exodus)
• In the cellar of his house, the Seventh Doctor had wines from every conceivable century on Earth, wines from Ribos and champagnes from Manussa. (VD: Decalog 2: Lost Property)
• The Eighth Doctor drank eight glasses of champagne at a wedding on the planet Albert. (EDA: Grimm Reality)
• The Ninth Doctor could identify the year and place of origin of wine by its taste. (NSA: The Clockwise Man)
• While preparing to have the Ninth Doctor over for dinner, Jackie Tyler asked if he drank, to which Rose replied that he did. (DW:World War Three)
• The Ninth Doctor and Blon Fel-Fotch Passameer-Day Slitheen had wine at a restaurant in Cardiff while waiting for the TARDIS to refuel. (DW:Boom Town)
• The Tenth Doctor, while acting drunker than he was, used the wine he had brought back from a party in France to disable the Clockwork Robots and rescue Rose and Mickey. He also claimed to have just invented at that same party the banana daiquiri years ahead of its time. (DW: The Girl in the Fireplace)
• The Eleventh Doctor appeared to dislike wine, spitting it back into the glass after taking a sip when given some at the house of Craig Owens. (DW: The Lodger)
• The Eleventh Doctor tried wine and spat it out at a picnic with Amy, Rory, and River Song, and revealed his age to be eleven hundred three years, saying he must have tried wine at some time in his life. (DW: The Impossible Astronaut) He said the bottle was thrown at him by Napoleon. (DW: The Wedding of River Song)

Bernice Summerfield

• Bernice Summerfield consumed a lot of wine during a meal with King Tarrol on Peladon, seemingly to trick a pair of accompanying Ice Warriors into thinking she was drunk (she wasn't). (NA: Legacy)
• Whilst at the Braxiatel Collection, Bernice Summerfield drank Craxiatanian Chardonay. (NA: Theatre of War)
• Bernice enjoyed a good German wine on a hot summer's day. (NA: Strange England)
• Bernice and Irving Braxiatel shared some glasses of fine champagne following the Gamaliel situation. (BNA: Dragons' Wrath)
• Bernice once got drunk on wine with Evelyn Smythe. (BFA: The 100 Days of the Doctor)

Other companions

• Susan drank wine whilst on the planet Avalon, explaining to Ian Chesterton that she couldn't get drunk unless she wanted to. (MA: The Sorcerer's Apprentice)
• Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton drank some wine whilst in a Roman villa. Vicki and her poisoner friend attempted to kill Nero by putting poison in his wine goblet. (DW: The Romans)
• Duggan and Romana drank wine following their failed attempt at stopping the theft of the Mona Lisa whilst in Paris. (DW: City of Death)
• Evelyn Smythe drank red wine during a meal with Charles Darwin in an attempt to avoid the various turtle-based dishes. (BFA: Bloodtide)

• The Wine Lords were famed throughout the Galaxy for their wines. Their society collapsed when they were convicted of mislabelling wine. (MA: The Crystal Bucephalus)
• The Squire drank wine for medicinal reasons. (DW: The Visitation)
• Richard Mace declared to Adric that wine tasted like nectar after looting some from the cellar of a manor. (DW: The Visitation)

Beer

Beer was created by the fermentation of barley and hops in water. The farming of hops for this purpose may have been have been what caused humanity to first switch from a hunter-gatherer society to an agricultural one. (BNA: Walking to Babylon)
