TARDIS console (The Star Beast)

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

The TARDIS control room used by the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors had a large TARDIS control console as a central part of its design.

Associated control rooms

This console appeared in TARDIS control room used by the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors. (TV: The Giggle [+]Loading...["The Giggle (TV story)"], et al.)

The lower half of panel 1 appeared as a control in the Remembered TARDIS. (TV: Earthshock [+]Loading...["Earthshock (TotT TV story)"], et al.)

Layout

The console's panels are numbered here in clockwise order, starting with the panel facing the TARDIS doors in the placement first seen in the episode The Star Beast [+]Loading...["The Star Beast (TV story)"].

Monitor

The console had a moveable monitor with two blue Gallifreyan symbol keyboards. (TV: Wild Blue Yonder [+]Loading...["Wild Blue Yonder (TV story)"])

Panel 1

The largest feature of the panel facing the TARDIS doors was on its upper half: a orangey cylindrical object with a dial on its middle and a lever with a red button on left side. The upper half also had plug-like extrusions and an ocular device for looking at something.

The panel's lower half had four red dials with green or red indicator lights, below which were eight blue switches which lit up white when in the up position, (TV: Wild Blue Yonder [+]Loading...["Wild Blue Yonder (TV story)"], The Giggle [+]Loading...["The Giggle (TV story)"]) with one of these being the butterfly compensation switch. (TV: Space Babies [+]Loading...["Space Babies (TV story)"]) The rest of the lower part had four keyboards with Gallifreyan symbols on them. In the middle of the keyboards, with two on either side, was a larger black switch which had two red buttons below it; this switch could set the TARDIS in flight. (TV: Wild Blue Yonder [+]Loading...["Wild Blue Yonder (TV story)"], The Giggle [+]Loading...["The Giggle (TV story)"])

Panel 2

The upper half of this panel had four triangular pieces with coloured light-up domes on them.

The lower half had two exhaust vents on either side in egg-shaped metal domes. Its furthest left control was a dark red button, above which were three dials with a shared number reading. To the right of this were two columns of brass-coloured smaller dials with Gallifreyan symbols on them. To the right of those were four amber-coloured cases. To the right of these were four red dials. And finally, there was another small dark red button. Panel 3

When the Fourteenth Doctor explained the console, he said that this panel had, "Well, things." (TV: The Giggle [+]Loading...["The Giggle (TV story)"])

Panel 4

The fourth panel was taken up a large coffee machine, which was operated by a panel of controls below it. (TV: The Star Beast [+]Loading...["The Star Beast (TV story)"])

The Fourteenth Doctor pointed out the fluid links on this panel. (TV: The Giggle [+]Loading...["The Giggle (TV story)"])

Panel 5

The left side of the fifth panel had eight sets of two small coloured lights, above which were two grey dials, above which were two small red dials. The middle had three large red dials, above which were three large switches with buttons on their ends. The right side had three rows of glowing red hexagons containing Gallifreyan symbols.

The top of this panel had five shiny knobs. (TV: Wild Blue Yonder [+]Loading...["Wild Blue Yonder (TV story)"], The Giggle [+]Loading...["The Giggle (TV story)"])

The Fourteenth Doctor indicated this panel had the Hyperdynes. (TV: The Giggle [+]Loading...["The Giggle (TV story)"])

Panel 6

The Fourteenth Doctor said this panel had the petrolink shatterfry compensator. (TV: The Giggle [+]Loading...["The Giggle (TV story)"])

Unplaced controls

Some controls were located on this console, but in locations unidentified by sources.

After the Fourteenth Doctor's bi-generation but before the TARDIS was duplicated, the Fourteenth Doctor looked at the console's controls and was upset because he thought he would never again be able to use them, including the Dematerialisation Switch, the fault locator, and the Mandrel Condenser. History

Regular usage

By the Fourteenth Doctor

  • The Doctor did several actions as he was getting acquainted with the new TARDIS:
  • He exclaimed "It's got this!" and pushed forward the left lever of panel 5, which changed the lighting to red.
  • He said "And that" and twisted two dials on panel 4, which made a beeping noise.
  • He used several controls on panel 3, which caused the lighting to become a glimmering purple, with another quick switch causing it to become solid green, then another to blue.
  • He caressed the two exhaust domes of panel 2, saying, "What's that?"
  • He looked into the viewing device on panel 1. (TV: The Star Beast [+]Loading...["The Star Beast (TV story)"])
  • As the Doctor started flying the ship, he began using controls on panel 3. After being distracted by the coffee machine, he returned to using these controls, then moved to panel 2 and caressed one of the blue domes on the triangles and also pulled a piece off of this panel and blew on it, then returned to using panel 3. (TV: The Star Beast [+]Loading...["The Star Beast (TV story)"])
  • To use the coffee machine, he entered a precise sequence of commands on on the panel below the coffee machine. (TV: The Star Beast [+]Loading...["The Star Beast (TV story)"])
  • When quickly leaving the spaceship with the Not-Thing Donna, the Doctor cranked the panel 4 lever back and forth while adjusting the controls on panel 3. (TV: Wild Blue Yonder [+]Loading...["Wild Blue Yonder (TV story)"])
  • To return to the spaceship and eject the Not-Thing Donna, he twisted the dial on the upper object of panel 1, then pushed backwards the object's lever, causing the walkway leading to the entrance to suddenly raise itself into a slide towards the exit. (TV: Wild Blue Yonder [+]Loading...["Wild Blue Yonder (TV story)"])
  • When the real Donna got safely onboard, the Doctor flicked the middle switch of panel 1 and the TARDIS immediately closed its doors and went into flight. (TV: Wild Blue Yonder [+]Loading...["Wild Blue Yonder (TV story)"])
  • When the TARDIS was later safely flying, the Doctor took them back to 2023 Earth by using various controls on panel 2 as he talked to Donna. (TV: Wild Blue Yonder [+]Loading...["Wild Blue Yonder (TV story)"])

By the Fifteenth Doctor

  • He started by using two controls on panel 3 simultaneously, then spun a red dial on panel 5 while pressing the button on the panel's left lever, then quickly adjusted several controls on the same panel, then flicked the furthest left blue switch on panel 6, after which the room's lighting changed to orange and it began making sounds of preparing for flight. (TV: The Giggle [+]Loading...["The Giggle (TV story)"])
  • After the previous manoeuvre, the Doctor flicked the middle switch on panel 1, which made the Time Rotor light up and start moving. The TARDIS then dematerialised shortly afterwards. (TV: The Giggle [+]Loading...["The Giggle (TV story)"])
  • After the previous manouvre, when the TARDIS was in flight, he lit up all the blue switches on panel 1, then some buttons on panel 3, then pulled the right lever on panel 5. (TV: The Giggle [+]Loading...["The Giggle (TV story)"])
