False Gods was the first story in the audio anthology, Forty-Five, which comprised the one hundred and fifteenth release in Big Finish's monthly range. It was written by Mark Morris and featured Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor, Sophie Aldred as Ace and Philip Olivier as Hex.

It was notable for showing a Time Lord other than the Doctor confronting the legal ramifications of breaking the Laws of Time.

Worldbuilding

Gallifreyan laws

• When a Time Lord sets her or himself up as a god in another culture, this is a "Class Two Intervention". Its penalty is vaporisation.
• Materially affecting the physical properties of a planet, such as its axial rotation, counts as a "Class One Intervention".

Planets

• In the far future, Earth's ozone layer is compromised to the extent that life can no longer be sustained on the planet.

TARDIS

• The way to kill a TARDIS is to pilot it into the heart of a star.
• Jane Templeton's TARDIS is disguised as a shabti figure.
• When a TARDIS is dying, it can link with another healthier TARDIS and recover partially.

Time Lords

• Jane is a Time Lord, a Time Lord Academy student in "Year 45". At the time the Doctor meets her, she is in her thirteenth life, having used up her regenerations whilst stranded on Earth for thousands of years.

Notes

• Plans were in place for The Daily Telegraph to release this story as a free standalone download to accompany a feature article about the Big Finish Doctor Who audio stories. These plans were postponed.
• David Richardson later recalled extending Cumberbatch's lunch break during the recording of this story so Cumberbatch could audition for Sherlock.

Continuity

• Ace once again observes that Hex is better at making tea than she is, as she did in AUDIO: The Settling ^[+]Loading...["The Settling (audio story)"].
