Mission of the Viyrans (audio story)
Mission of the Viyrans was a one-part story, released on 9 November 2007,[1] comprising part of the one hundred and second release in Big Finish's monthly range. It was written by Nicholas Briggs and featured Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor and Nicola Bryant as Peri Brown.
Unlike other one-part stories, it is not connected to the main story with which it was released nor does it have the same cast as the relevant story, given that this story does not feature Erimem, played by Caroline Morris and isn't written by the same person. Nevertheless, it continued a virus strain story arc which concluded with Patient Zero.

Worldbuilding[[edit] | [edit source]]
Foods and beverages[[edit] | [edit source]]
- Grallistan punch deserves its reputation for potency.
Individuals[[edit] | [edit source]]
- The Viyrans attempt to wipe Peri's memories but they fail 338 times to achieve "Memory Zero."
Species[[edit] | [edit source]]
- The Viyrans come from a galaxy which has known only war for millennia.
- The Viyrans find vocalisation difficult and they achieve it artificially via a recording of an individual's voice.
Notes[[edit] | [edit source]]
- Mission of the Viyrans is only one episode long. The remaining three episodes on the two discs are part of The Mind's Eye.
- The original title of this story was Patient Zero. It had to be changed because of a similar title in Torchwood.[2]
- The cover for this story is only available with the download version of this release, not even being used on the story's page on the Big Finish website, which instead uses a cropped version of the CD interior booklet art for Blue Forgotten Planet, centred on the Viyrans. The front of the Sixth Doctor's coat can be seen behind them.
- This story was recorded at the Moat Studios,[3][4][5] most likely on 25 and/or 27 July 2007 with The Mind's Eye,[5] as no other recording dates are associated with this story.
- Big Finish made this story available for download on its own in 2009.
- Neither this story's page or its DWM Promo page have a 'Purchase' widget; it can only be accessed with purchase of The Mind's Eye.
- This story is set between Planet of Fire and The Caves of Androzani.[5]
- This story takes place after the audio story The Bride of Peladon, in spite of the fact that it was released earlier, due to Peri referencing Erimem's departure.
- The third edition of AHistory arbitrarily places this story in 2684 (Grallista Social seems to be a human planet, and it's the first time the Viyrans have encountered humanity).
Continuity[[edit] | [edit source]]
- Peri recalls her imaginary stepson Kyle, (AUDIO: The Mind's Eye) meeting Dracula in Ungro-Wallachia in June 1462 (AUDIO: Son of the Dragon) and Erimem's departure from the TARDIS on Peladon in the 41st century. (AUDIO: The Bride of Peladon)
- During his sixth incarnation, the Doctor would later return to Grallista Social in the company of Charley Pollard. (AUDIO: Patient Zero)
- The mutagenic virus which infected Peri was one of the millions of viruses which were accidentally released from the Amethyst Viral Containment Station in the far future and spread throughout time and space. It is similar to the virus which Mila is infected with. (AUDIO: Patient Zero)
