This topic might have a better name.

Philip of Spain, as he is only ever referred to as Philip in the sources in this article. At the very least it should be renamed as Philip II of Spain to dab from Philip II of France.

Philip II

Philip was the King of Spain during the 16th century (AUDIO: The Flames of Cadiz) and of England by his marriage to Queen Mary I of England during the 1550s, which held in place an alliance between England and Spain. (AUDIO: The Marian Conspiracy)

By 1587, however, England and Spain were at war following the execution of Mary Stuart by the Protestant English with Elizabeth I on the throne, an execution which Philip had sworn to avenge before the tomb of his father. In 1587, Philip was building his Armada to launch an attack on England at the behest of the Pope. During this time, he met the First Doctor, who was posing as a cardinal from Rome in an attempt to spare Ian Chesterton from being executed by the Spanish Inquisition. (AUDIO: The Flames of Cadiz)
