The British Royal Family were the family of the kings and queens of the United Kingdom.

The Royal Family had the blood mutation haemophilia which had also been called the "royal disease". The Tenth Doctor jovially suggested this was actually werewolf cells which Queen Victoria had passed to her children. He further suggested they might eventually mature in the 21st century. Tsarina Alexandra of Russia had relatives in the British Royal Family, with whom she shared regular correspondence. During the First World War, the British feared this risked bringing the Royal Family into disrepute, as Alexandra also regularly wrote to a high-ranking brother in Germany. In December 1916, Kit Powell, a British spy, was sent on a mission to St Petersburg to assess any threat. The Royal Family was at the centre of a national scandal in 1936 when King Edward VIII announced his intention to marry the American Wallis Simpson. The Sixth Doctor and Winston Churchill exposed his part in a pro-Nazi coup while under the influence of the Players and he was forced to abdicate. On 8 May 1945, VE Day, the Royal Family appeared alongside Churchill on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to address the jubilant crowds celebrating the end of the Second World War in Europe. (AUDIO: Churchill Victorious)
In the 1970s, an anti-monarchist and anarchist, Derek Pole, attempted to carry out the assassination of Princess Mary as part of a plan to bring down the incumbent government. Under the Ragman's influence, Mary killed Pole instead, but retained no memory of the incident. (PROSE: Rags)

In 2006, following the crash of the Slitheen craft in Westminster, the Royal Family were evacuated, leaving the country with effectively no head of state. This allowed Jocrassa Fel-Fotch Passameer-Day Slitheen, while disguised as Joseph Green, to become acting prime minister without being constitutionally appointed by the monarch. Over the years, people identified numerous suspects as Jack the Ripper, including members of the Royal Family. (PROSE: The Pit) Amy Pond had been sure it was someone from the Royal Family. The Eleventh Doctor blamed this on movies and said it made the truth look less far-fetched in comparison. (COMIC: Ripper's Curse)
When Earth was threatened with solar flares in the 29th century, the British Royal Family became the monarchs of the UK's population on Starship UK. Liz Ten was queen of Starship UK until at least the 52nd century. (TV: The Beast Below, The Pandorica Opens)
