The Battle of Bannerman Road was to have been the final story of Series 5 of The Sarah Jane Adventures. However, Elisabeth Sladen died in April 2011 when only half of the series had been filmed, so The Man Who Never Was instead served as the show's finale. Had the three remaining episodes been completed, The Battle of Bannerman Road would have been the thirtieth TV story of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

The Trickster would have returned in the story. It would have been revealed that he had instilled his essence in Sky Smith at the moment of her creation and manipulated events so she ended up with Sarah Jane. He would have awakened Sky's "Trickster" half and used her to attack Sarah Jane, then activated his plan and turned Sarah Jane's attic into a tower and took over the world; Sky would later have destroyed him and guarded his prison. Jo and Santiago Jones, Professor Rivers, and the Shopkeeper also would have returned in this story.[1]

The webcast Farewell, Sarah Jane, released on 19 April 2020 as part of Doctor Who: Lockdown!, alluded to the events of The Battle of Bannerman Road having still taken place in the DWU, as Sky is mentioned to have "manifested in her human form".
