Doctor Who: The Animated Series was a proposed animated Doctor Who series by Karen McCoy in 1997, in the wake of Fox Broadcasting deciding not to continue with a Doctor Who TV series following the TV Movie. The series would have featured the Eighth Doctor and a new companion named Elizabeth "Liz" McPherson.

The series was originally intended to be shot in live action. Contact was made with "contacts" in the BBC, and McCoy made an announcement that a series was in the works before hearing back from the BBC itself. The Gallifrey Guardian feature in DWM 257 revealed that Area 9 and Kor Media, some of the companies McCoy claimed were involved in the series, denied their involvement. (DWM 257) McCoy later claimed, after speaking to Paul McGann (or his representation), that he was no longer interested in playing the Doctor. She then touted the idea of finding a voice talent to mimic his voice. It was at this point when intentions for the series moved towards animation rather than live action.

Spec art was produced for the series to help sell the project to the BBC. The proposal won the support of former Doctor Who producer Barry Letts and he offered to co-produce the series if they could get it off the ground. In November 1997, Korean based animation group Galaxy World, Inc offered their support to animate the series if the BBC gave the green light.

In late 1997 a "higher up" in the BBC vetoed the idea for an animated series and there was no way for the project to move forward without their approval. (VV 5)
