Scourge of the Cybermen was the first release in The Audio Novels. It was written by Simon Guerrier. It featured the Third Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith and the Cybermen.
Summary
In the depths of the ocean on an alien world, there's a city run by scientists. The Doctor is only too eager to help them find new ways to counter pollution and produce entirely clean energy - research that he says will benefit the whole galaxy. But others have recognised the value of the sea base, and their interest is not so benign...
Left to her own devices, Sarah Jane Smith conducts her own investigation. The lights on the base keep flickering, which back home on Earth was the first sign that her bathroom was leaking. Out here in the depths of the alien sea, it's the first indication of a looming disaster.
Patiently, implacably, the Cybermen are determined to conquer the base and its resources. That includes all the men, women and children who live there.
As the Doctor once again battles his old enemies, Sarah rallies the trapped and terrified people. Then, to her horror, she realises that the Cybermen have used cold logic to predict exactly what the humans will do in order to survive...

Notes
- This story is set between Death to the Daleks and The Monster of Peladon.
- This story was recorded at LA Productions.
- This story gives conflicting accounts of when its set with Mercy Mercer saying that most of the adults grew up during the Cyber-Wars. The Doctor remembers Burnt Salt, (AUDIO: The Tyrants of Logic) which the narration implies is at the end of the recent war, which would place this story in the 24th century at the latest. Later when Akira thinks Sarah has been through Suspended animation he says that someone on the base was from the 200th Century, meaning this story is even later than that. Then when Akira looks up records of the Doctor he states that the Cybermen attack on Space Station W3 (TV: The Wheel in Space) was 1000 years ago, which would place this story in 31st century.
- Simon Guerrier stated the story was 60,000 words long. He compared this to the length of his entries in the BBC New Series Adventures, The Pirate Loop and The Slitheen Excursion, which were 50,000 words, and the latest BBC novelisations such as Dalek and The Witchfinders, which were around 30,000-40,000 words long. (BFX: Scourge of the Cybermen)
Continuity
- The Doctor references the time when humanity cleaned up debris from Earth's orbit. (AUDIO: Scavenger)
- The Doctor references time when he caught a Sontaran spy through humans empathetic reaction to yawning. (AUDIO: The Sontarans)
- The Third Doctor previously encountered the Cybermen on Earth with Liz Shaw and UNIT (AUDIO: The Blue Tooth) and Burnt Salt with Jo Grant. (AUDIO: The Tyrants of Logic)
- Later in her timeline, Sarah Jane Smith would encounter the Cybermen again on Nerva with the Fourth Doctor (TV: Revenge of the Cybermen, AUDIO: Return of the Cybermen) and in the Death Zone on Gallifrey with the Third Doctor. (TV: The Five Doctors)
