Anya Kingdom was a member of the Space Security Service who posed as a police officer called "Ann Kelso" from 1970s Earth, and a companion of the Fourth and Tenth Doctors.
Biography
Early life
Anya was the daughter of Lena Kingdom, granddaughter of Merrick Kingdom, and the niece of Sara Kingdom (former companion of the First Doctor), David Kingdom and Bret Vyon. As a child she was inspired by the heroic image of her aunt and uncle to join the Space Security Service. (AUDIO: The House of Kingdom)
Meeting the Doctor
Ann first encountered the Fourth Doctor after Jimmy Lynch's gang attacked Tony's café. She then hid Tony in her flat and helped the Doctor to defeat the Sinestrans. She asked to join him on his travels and he accepted. (AUDIO: The Sinestran Kill)
Travels in the TARDIS
On Ann's first trip in the TARDIS, she was present when the Doctor activated K9 Mark II, and was introduced to K9 as his new mistress. The Doctor attempted to introduce Ann to the wider universe with a pleasant holiday, but ended up landing on Drashig World during a system malfunction that allowed all the Drashigs to escape their enclosures (AUDIO: Planet of the Drashigs).
Attempting to visit a friend in the Victorian era, the Doctor and Ann found themselves tracking a sentient computer virus from the distant future that was attempting to ensure its own creation by manipulating Ada Lovelace, posing as the ghost of her father Lord Byron (AUDIO: The Enchantress of Numbers).
Finally tracking a lead on the Sinestrans' sponsors, the Doctor and Ann arrived on Kembel, still devastated by the Time Destructor, apart from a garden set up by a group of sponsors as a means of relaxation for significant figures.
In reality, "Ann Kelso" was a fake identity created for Space Security Service officer Anya Kingdom, who had allegedly been sent back to protect Tony after he called for help. She had started travelling with the Doctor as she subconsciously recognised that the TARDIS would be the perfect way to find the rest of the Syndicate. While the "Ann Kelso" personality was mostly in control, Anya would take control to deal with threats and potential enemies in a more ruthless manner than Ann might have preferred. (AUDIO: The Perfect Prisoners)
"Death" of Ann Kelso
Once Ann's true identity was revealed, the Doctor determined that she was actually an agent of Zaal, the head of the SSS and Earth's representative in the Syndicate, who had sent Anya to use the Doctor to eliminate his associates in the Syndicate so that he could take power himself without them realising the truth. Fortunately, the Doctor was able to convince Anya that she had been just as brainwashed as Zaal's other agents and helped her break her conditioning in time to trick Zaal into a confession.
Although Zaal's control over her was broken, the Doctor declined Anya's request to continue travelling with him, as he had genuinely liked Ann Kelso and found it hard to look at Anya as anything more than the reason Ann wasn't there any more. Despite her regret, Anya accepted his decision and decided to focus on the new task of rebuilding civilisation after Zaal's illusions had been removed. (AUDIO: The Perfect Prisoners)
Partnership with Mark Seven
Info from Queen of the Mechonoids needs to be added
Anya joined the Anti-Dalek Force. When the agent android Mark Seven came back from a mission showing signs of a possible manipulation, Anya was secretly sent to observe him on Exxilon. She followed him when he went to explore a nearby discharge of energy, and they watched together from afar as the Doctor and Leela were taken prisoners by her colleagues. Anya used her position to get the TARDIS on board the spaceship leaving Exxilon, then orchestrated the events so that the Doctor could take a look at Mark and discover how the Daleks manipulated his mind. All that time, she managed to avoid being seen by the Doctor, in order not to cause damages to the timeline. When the Daleks attacked, Anya was severely injured, but Mark saved her life fighting against the Daleks’ programming. (AUDIO: The Dalek Protocol)
Reunited with the Doctor
Info from The Wrong Woman and The House of Kingdom needs to be added
Anya took part of an expedition to the planet Mira, where SSS agents were supposed to investigate about a spaceship crash. Her real mission was to find Mark, who was keeping an eye on George Sheldrake’s experiments on time travel. She stumbled upon the Tenth Doctor, transported into this time with no TARDIS; with his help, she retrieved Mark and managed to escape the Visians. Back on Earth, Anya, the Doctor and Mark started investigating on Sheldrake, and they found out that he used Gallifreyan technology. She and Mark went to inform their superiors and ask for a warrant, but they came back when the Doctor was hit by a mysterious assassin, and saw him regenerate. (AUDIO: Buying Time)
Behind the scenes
The character of Ann Kelso was written specifically for Jane Slavin due to her extensive work on the Fourth Doctor Adventures and her close friendship with Tom Baker.[1]
