Untitled Paul Cornell story (unproduced novel)
A novel was pitched by Paul Cornell which would feature the Seventh Doctor regenerating into an Eighth Doctor based on David Troughton.
Peter Darvill-Evans proposed regenerating the Doctor to freshen up the Virgin New Adventures series. Darvill-Evans wanted a photoshoot with David Troughton for the cover artists. He also wanted authors meet him and study his other roles to characterise the new Doctor. Darvill-Evans suggested bringing back Turlough as the Doctor's companion. The development of the 1996 TV movie put an end to the whole idea.[1][2]
Half-way through the Cornell's proposed novel, the Seventh Doctor would have been blown up in a field. He would regenerate by growing out of the earth or walk out of the TARDIS in his in incarnation. Paul Cornell described the new Doctor being like Captain Lawrence Oates. He would have been square-jawed and muscular but also awkward like a "bull in a china shop".[2]
