The Pirates was a story concept in John Leekley's series bible for Amblin Entertainment's proposed 1990s Doctor Who television show. It was loosely based on the First Doctor serial The Smugglers.[1]

Synopsis[[edit] | [edit source]]

Borusa believes that Blackbeard was the Doctor's father, Ulysses, and the Doctor travels to 18th century Spain to investigate. However, he falls into the hands of pirates seeking Bluebeard's legendary treasure. After stealing their map, the Doctor finds Bluebeard and helps him fight off the pirates. However, before the Doctor can ask if Bluebeard is his father, Ulysses vanishes over the hill.[2]

Notes[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • Like with other inconsistencies throughout the Leekley Bible, such as whether the Doctor's grandfather's name is spelled "Borusa" or "Barusa", the brief summary of The Pirates alternates between calling Ulysses' pirate identity "Blackbeard" (after the infamous pirate) and "Bluebeard" (after the character from French folklore).
  • An earlier draft of the summary, written by Leekley on 21 March 1994, explained that the Doctor obtained the pirates' sought-after treasure map from a churchwarden who the pirates then murdered.[2]
