Coal Hill assembly
Morning assembly at Coal Hill School took place every morning at 9 o'clock, in the assembly hall. It was the first thing to take place in the morning routine at school.
During daily assemblies in 1963, hymns were "murdered" by the student body, to Mrs Bellweather's piano "poundings", Leslie Culver would do her bible readings, and headmaster Basil James Carker, wearing his customary gown of authority, would make the announcements for the day.
On 28 March 1963, the school sang "He Who Would Valiant Be" and "There Is a Green Hill Far Away, Without a City Wall". Mr Carker announced amendments to the school rules due to cold weather: No running, no snowballs, no skating, no whistling.
On 2 April, after having slept in the school, Susan was happy to see that the whole city did not die from the attack of the Cold the previous night, and plenty of people still came in for 9 o'clock assembly. Mr Carker came in wearing an old Mackintosh and wellies, rather than his usual gown of authority, and demanded an explanation from Captain Brent. The headmaster said he was prepared to detain everyone if they left school grounds in lesson-time, despite the numerous deaths, and demanded that they all attend assembly. (PROSE: Time and Relative)
In 2016, Coal Hill still held assemblies. The Twelfth Doctor pressured Clara Oswald to go to assembly instead of talking to him—"Go and worship something." (TV: The Caretaker)
