• A German U-boat which was patrolling the English Channel in 1943 was sent forward in time to this year, where it threatened to torpedo the Isle of Wight ferry. Sir Toby Kinsella of the Intrusion Countermeasures Group ordered Group Captain Ian Gilmore and his squad to investigate and render assistance to the personnel of the nearby Lanchester Naval Base. • The Fourth Doctor visited St Cedd's College at Cambridge. (DW: Shada)
• An archaeological dig in Alaska led by Tulung's father accidentally unearthed a Permian fossil. It revived and attacked them. While Shaun Brett's father fled, Tulung's father used dynamite to destroy the creature. The plane carrying Brett nearly collided with the TARDIS, which had materialised in mid-air. • 22 January - In an alternative timeline, U.S. President John F. Kennedy would have started a nuclear war on this date if he had not been assassinated on 22 November 1963. (MA: Who Killed Kennedy)

• 13 July - In another alternative timeline created by the Trickster, Sarah Jane Smith drowned and Andrea lived. This was undone by Andrea in 2008, once she realised the results of what she had done. (SJA: Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?)

Early 1964

• Moris Farhi submitted a six-episode script entitled Farewell Great Macedon and a single-episode script entitled The Fragile Yellow Arc of Fragrance. Neither were produced, but both would be published in 2009 and were adapted for Big Finish Productions' The Lost Stories range in 2010.

February

• A recording of the Doctor Who theme by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop was released on a 45 rpm single. This was the earliest noted release of any soundtrack music from the series.
• Another recording of the Doctor Who theme, this time by Eric Winstone and his Orchestra, was also released on Pye Records, and was probably the first non-BBC recording of the theme to be issued.
• 01 - "The Rescue" (DW: The Daleks Episode 7; not to be confused with a later serial of the same name) was first broadcast.
• 08 - "The Edge of Destruction" (DW: The Edge of Destruction Episode 1) was first broadcast.

  • Radio Times printed its first-ever Doctor Who-related cover (dated February 22-28) to promote the first episode of DW: Marco Polo.
• 16 - Christopher Eccleston (the Ninth Doctor) was born in Salford, Lancashire, England. He was the first actor to play the Doctor born after the series debuted on television.

• 12 - "Prisoners of Concergerie" (DW: The Reign of Terror Episode 6) was first broadcast. The airing of this episode concluded Season 1 of Doctor Who, although only a few weeks passed before the start of Season 2.

October

• 31 - "Planet of Giants", the first episode of Season 2 and of the story DW: Planet of Giants, was first broadcast.

November

• 02 - Loraine Velez (the Spanish Maid in DW: Turn Left) was born.
• 07 - "Dangerous Journey" (DW: Planet of Giants Episode 2) was first broadcast.
• 12 - DWN: Doctor Who in an Exciting Adventure with the Daleks, a hardback novelisation by David Whitaker of DW: The Daleks and the first-ever Doctor Who tie-in novel, was published in hardcover by Frederick Muller. In 1973, it was reprinted by Target Books as Doctor Who and the Daleks.
• 14 - "Crisis" (DW: Planet of Giants Episode 3) was first broadcast.
  • Radio Times again featured a cover story on Doctor Who, this time announcing the much-anticipated return of the Daleks in DW: The Dalek Invasion of Earth.
  • The Doctor Who comic strip made its debut in the 674th issue of TV Comic, with the comic The Klepton Parasites.
• 21 - "World's End" (DW: The Dalek Invasion of Earth Episode 1) was first broadcast. For the first time, a Doctor Who episode featured extensive location filming and brought back a previously seen monster. It was also the first story to incorporate widely known London landmarks (despite being set in the future).
• 28 - "The Daleks" (DW: The Dalek Invasion of Earth Episode 2) was first broadcast.

December

• Its original 20,000-copy print run already sold out, DWN: Doctor Who in an Exciting Adventure with the Daleks went into a second printing.
• Doctor Who entered the pop music leagues when a Newcastle girl group called The Go-Go's (no relation to the American group of the 1980s) released the single "I'm Gonna Spend My Christmas With A Dalek". Perhaps coincidentally, the Dalek story underway at this time would run through Christmas.
• 05 - "Day of Reckoning" (DW: The Dalek Invasion of Earth Episode 3) was first broadcast.
• 12 - "The End of Tomorrow" (DW: The Dalek Invasion of Earth Episode 4) was first broadcast.
• 19 - "The Waking Ally" (DW: The Dalek Invasion of Earth Episode 5) was first broadcast.
• 26 - "Flashpoint" (DW: The Dalek Invasion of Earth Episode 6) was first broadcast. The episode saw the first major cast change as Carole Ann Ford left the series.
