Malawi, formerly known as Nyasaland, was an African country during Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan's time.
They visited Malawi with the Fourth Doctor about four hundred years before it was called Nyasaland. While there, they got embroiled in a hunt for a mythical beast called a "Nandi Bear". In the process, they convinced the tribal chief to deceive the tribal shaman about the success of the hunt. Though this deception was beneficial in the short run, the shaman eventually discovered he'd been duped. The chief was then executed, and the tribe failed to progress as swiftly as it might have. (PROSE: To Kill a Nandi Bear)
Constance Clarke grew up in Nyasaland (AUDIO: Criss-Cross) where her father owned land and employed local people as servants. (AUDIO: The Behemoth) She returned to the United Kingdom after her father died of tuberculosis prior to 1940. (AUDIO: Criss-Cross)
