Romanadvoratrelundar — known in short as Romana was a Time Lord who was assigned the task to assist the Fourth Doctor in his quest for the Key to Time. She stayed with him long after that task was done and parted from him in E-Space. When she returned to N-Space, she became the Lady President of the Time Lords of Gallifrey.

Biography
Name
Early Life
Romanadvoratrelundar was a single, long name which Irving Braxiatel shortened to "Romana" when she was at the Time Lord Academy, although Braxiatel later removed all of her memories of him. (AUDIO: Lies (audio story)) The Fourth Doctor too shortened it to "Romana", a name which she said she did not like and, when given the choice of being called "Romana" or "Fred", she told him to call her "Fred". (TV: The Ribos Operation (TV story))
For some time Romana worked in the Bureau of Ancient Records on Gallifrey. (DW: State of Decay)
Travels with the Doctor
First incarnation
Romana first met the Doctor in her first incarnation. Though a young (about 139) and relatively inexperienced Time Lady, she was nevertheless extremely bright and capable, having obtained a triple first at the Academy. (The Doctor scraped through with 51% a minimal passing score on his second attempt.)

The Time Lords and the White Guardian sent Romana to help the Doctor and K9 Mark II locate the Key to Time. It was the Doctor who first gave her the shortened version of her name. (DW: The Ribos Operation)
The Doctor called her "Miss Dvoratrelundar" when she was a witness at his trial before the Megara. (TV: The Stones of Blood (TV story))

Second incarnation
Biography
After the completion of the quest Romana regenerated into her second incarnation. Accounts as to the reasons for this regeneration and the circumstances differ, though all agree that in her second incarnation, Romana permanently adopted the likeness of Princess Astra of Atrios for the duration of the incarnation.
Romana I
Romana I
Early life
Romana was an only child (AUDIO: Neverland (audio story)) and member of the House of Dvora. (AUDIO: Panacea (audio story)) After the Imperator Crisis, the children of Dvora were scattered to Houses across the Homeworld; (PROSE: Newtons Sleep (novel)) Romana spent her childhood in the House of Heartshaven. (AUDIO: Panacea (audio story)) As a Time Tot, she had a copy of the Gallifreyan nursery book, Our Planet Story. (AUDIO: Shada (audio story), PROSE: Shada (novelisation)) She graduated with a "triple first" from the Time Lord Academy on Gallifrey. (TV: The Ribos Operation (TV story)) Her peers gave her the nickname and unofficial title of "The Ice Maiden." (AUDIO: The Inquiry (audio story), Lies (audio story)) One of her early jobs was working in the Bureau of Ancient Records on Gallifrey. (TV: State of Decay (TV story))

*One account says that, unknown to the Doctor, Romana suffered damage due to exposure to the Key to Time. Just as she was about to regenerate, an anthropomorphised manifestation of the Doctor's TARDIS, jealous of Romana, trapped her in a force field and proceeded to pretend to be Romana. The TARDIS changed into different forms, and finally became a double of Princess Astra (ST: The Lying Old Witch in the Wardrobe) An adventure on the planet Skaro followed. (DW: Destiny of the Daleks) Realising the error of its ways after that adventure, it released Romana, but not before making the Time Lady assume the image of Astra. (ST: The Lying Old Witch in the Wardrobe)
Travels with the Doctor
Romana first met the Doctor when she was a young (about one hundred twenty-five) and relatively inexperienced Time Lady. She had a haughty, aristocratic air and her personality did not always mix well with that of the Doctor.

*Another account said that Romana forced her own regeneration to prevent an ancient Gallifreyan evil called Pandora from gaining power over her. (BFG: Lies)
The White Guardian sent Romana to help the Doctor and K9 Mark II locate the Key to Time. It was the Doctor who gave her the shortened version of her name. (TV: The Ribos Operation (TV story)) It was during this mission that she visited Earth for the first time. (TV: The Stones of Blood (TV story))

*A third account says that when the Key to Time was assembled without the sixth piece, it left Princess Astra and was absorbed by Romana, the strain of which caused a regeneration. (BFA: The Key 2 Time - The Chaos Pool)
After the completion of the quest, the Doctor installed a randomiser in the TARDIS to evade the Black Guardian and his wrath. As a result, the travellers didn't know where they would materialise next. (TV: The Armageddon Factor (TV story))

There is also an account that suggests that, at some point after the installation of the randomiser into the Doctor's TARDIS (DW: The Armageddon Factor) but before the Doctor, Romana and K-9 found themselves trapped in E-Space (DW: Full Circle), Romana for reasons unknown left the TARDIS for a time. The Doctor and K-9 continued to travel on their own for a time (DWM: Timeslip), even picking up a new companion along the way (DWM: The Star Beast), but eventually Romana reunited with the Doctor and they resumed their travels together.
Regeneration
Romana regenerated into a new incarnation, seemingly on a whim, adopting the likeness of Princess Astra of Atrios. (TV: Destiny of the Daleks (TV story))

Romana and the Doctor at last parted when she decided to remain in E-Space with K-9 in order to help the enslaved Tharils regain their freedom. The Doctor and Adric left for N-Space, the Doctor's native universe, leaving Romana and K-9. (DW: Warriors' Gate)
Accounts of the reasons for her first regeneration and the circumstances differed, though all agreed that in this incarnation, Romana adopted the likeness of Princess Astra of Atrios.
* One account said that unknown to the Doctor, Romana was harmed by the Key to Time. Just as she was about to regenerate, an anthropomorphised manifestation of the Doctor's TARDIS, jealous of her, trapped her in a force field and pretended to be her. The TARDIS changed into different forms and finally became a double of Princess Astra. Realising the error of its ways after that, it released Romana, but not before making her assume the form of Astra. (PROSE: The Lying Old Witch in the Wardrobe (short story))
* Another account said that Romana forced her own regeneration to prevent an ancient Gallifreyan evil called Pandora from gaining power over her. (AUDIO: Lies (audio story))
* A third account said that when the Key to Time was assembled without the sixth piece, it left Princess Astra and was absorbed by Romana. The strain forced a regeneration. (AUDIO: The Chaos Pool (audio story))
* A fourth account said that Romana was simply fed up with the Doctor thinking that she was too serious and not any fun, so regenerated as a deliberate act of recklessness to prove him otherwise. (PROSE: City of Death (novelisation))

As Lady President
There was also an account that suggested that at some point after the installation of the randomiser in the Doctor's TARDIS but before the Doctor, Romana and K9 found themselves trapped in E-Space, Romana left the TARDIS. The Doctor and K9 continued to travel on their own for a time, (COMIC: Timeslip (comic story)) even picking up a new companion along the way. (COMIC: Doctor Who and the Star Beast (comic story)) Eventually, Romana returned to the Doctor and they resumed their travels together.

:Conflicting accounts of Romana's career as Lady President are tricky to reconcile, if they happened in the same timeline.
Romana II
Romana II

Second incarnation
Travels with the Doctor
Romana would later return to N-Space; one account suggests the Doctor made this possible. (NA: Blood Harvest) She subsequently assumed a seat on the High Council of Time Lords. (MA: Goth Opera) She later attained the office of President. She was at this time generally referred to by her full name, and had Leela, K9 and Irving Braxiatel as her closest confidants.
An adventure on the planet Skaro followed her regeneration, during which Romana encountered the Daleks. (TV: Destiny of the Daleks (TV story)) In this incarnation, Romana travelled for a time with the Doctor and K9. Leaving the randomiser behind on Argolis, (TV: The Leisure Hive (TV story)) the three accidentally passed through a CVE into the universe called E-Space. It was here they encountered Adric. (TV: Full Circle (TV story)) Adric stowed away onboard the TARDIS and all the travellers were brought to an encounter with an ancient enemy of the Time Lords, the Great Vampire. (TV: State of Decay (TV story)) Romana and the Doctor parted when she decided to remain in E-Space with K9 to help the enslaved Tharils regain their freedom. The Doctor and Adric left for N-Space, the Doctor's native universe. (TV: Warriors' Gate (TV story))

She was abducted by the Daleks and kept prisoner for twenty years, barely escaping with her sanity intact although an adventure shared with the Doctor helped her recover (BFA: The Apocalypse Element) and afterwards presided over Gallifrey in a ever-changing political situation where new time-active powers like the Monan Host were coming to prominence. The machinations of the Free Time terrorist group and a civil war against the malevolent Pandora (who took on the form of Romana's first incarnation) would eventually see Gallifrey fall into ruin and Romana lose her position to Matthias. Braxiatel attempted to salvage the situation but this went "pear-shaped", leaving Gallifrey overrun by Dogma Virus zombies and about to be hit with temporal weapons; Romana, however, had a plan in mind (though it is as yet unknown). (Gallifrey (audio series))

(PROSE: Blood Harvest (novel)) She subsequently assumed a seat on the High Council of Time Lords (PROSE: Goth Opera (novel)) and later attained the office of President. She was at this time generally referred to by her full name and had Leela, K9 and Irving Braxiatel as her closest confidantes.

Third incarnation
She was abducted by the Daleks, and kept prisoner for twenty years, barely escaping with her sanity intact, although an adventure shared with the Sixth Doctor helped her recover. (AUDIO: The Apocalypse Element (audio story)) After this, she presided over Gallifrey in an ever-changing political situation where new time-active powers like the Monan Host were coming to prominence. The machinations of the Free Time terrorist group and a civil war against the malevolent Pandora (who took on the form of Romana's first incarnation) would eventually see Gallifrey fall into ruin and Romana lose her position to Matthias. Braxiatel tried to salvage the situation, but this went "pear-shaped", leaving Gallifrey overrun by Dogma Virus zombies and about to be hit with temporal weapons. (AUDIO: Panacea (audio story)) Romana, however, had a plan: explore alternate universes to find a new Gallifrey to live on. (AUDIO: Reborn (audio story)) Finally, Romana, Leela, and Narvin settled on a version of Gallifrey in which time travel was just beginning to be realised. Romana assumed the Presidency after the assassination of her alternate universe counterpart and appointed Narvin her chancellor. (AUDIO: Forever (audio story))
Still as Lady President, Romana regenerated a second time into her third incarnation (EDA: The Shadows of Avalon) Romana was far more ruthless in this incarnation in the previous two and presided over a war with the Enemy and the destruction of Gallifrey. (EDA: The Ancestor Cell). She looks (worryingly from the Doctor's point-of-view) like the Doctor's mother, and has a Seal of Rassilon tattoo on her ankle. She has dark hair that she wears long and straight.

Some evidence may suggest that Romana may have been one of a few Time Lords that survived this cataclysm, possibly in a fourth incarnation. (PDA: Tomb of Valdemar)
Romana discovered a signal coming through time from the Axis, which she thought could be a way back to their home. When a portal from this signal opened in the Panopticon, she was greeted by Daleks. (AUDIO: Arbitration (audio story)) Romana managed to prevent the Daleks' plan to invade the multiverse, and managed to return home to her own Gallifrey, complete with a cure to the Dogma virus. (AUDIO: Extermination (audio story)) Shortly after arriving on her own Gallifrey, Romana repelled a Dalek invasion of Gallifrey with her future incarnation by trapping them in the Matrix. She then set about rebuilding her Gallifrey, which was still crippled by disease and war. (AUDIO: Ascension (Gallifrey audio story))

Last Great Time War
Time War
Accounts suggest that Romana was still the President of the Time Lords at the start of the Last Great Time War. (DWA: 2006 Doctor Who Annual)
In the timeline created by Irving Braxiatel averting her second regeneration aboard the Moros, Romana resigned as President and became Coordinator of the Celestial Intervention Agency, (AUDIO: Enemy Lines (audio story)) which she was still serving as at the outbreak of the Last Great Time War. (AUDIO: Celestial Intervention (audio story)) The Tenth Doctor recalled that "things went well for Romana... until the Time War." (COMIC: The Forgotten (comic story))

After an escalation of hostilities with the Daleks (BFA:The Apocalypse Element) Romana made diplomatic overtures. (NA: Lungbarrow) She later initiated a Dalek-Time Lord peace treaty under the Act of Master Restitution. (DWA: 2006 Doctor Who Annual)
Romana was exiled along with Narvin after a failed attempt to assassinate Lord President Eternal Rassilon. (AUDIO: Assassins (audio story)) She became caught up in the Dalek Emperor’s plot to seize Gallifrey by null space technology, after which Rassilon exiled her to a pocket dimension filled with Gallifrey’s archives to serve as an archivist. (AUDIO: Homecoming (audio story))

Fate
Romana III
Towards the end of the Last Great Time War, Romana was no longer Lady President of Gallifrey. She had been replaced by Rassilon who was Lord President of the Time Lords of Gallifrey at the end of the war. (DW: The End of Time) The Doctor stated that "Things went well for Romana... until the Time War." (IDW: The Forgotten) Rassilon may have forced her to resign (or possibly killed her) since she knew Rassilon became a corrupted leader during his previous ruling days before the Time War.
Romana III
Two sets of accounts documented two different fates for the incarnation following Romana II, both of which involved leading Gallifrey through a brutal war.

Personality
As she returned to her native Gallifrey after her adventures in the Axis, Romana II met a Matrix projection of her next incarnation, who adopted the nickname of "Trey" to avoid confusion. (AUDIO: Renaissance (audio story)) In her own era, she led Gallifrey through a series of cataclysmic events that started with the return of Omega (AUDIO: Intervention Earth (audio story)) and continued with a devastating war (AUDIO: Luna Romana (audio story), Enemy Lines (audio story)) that eventually left Romana III as the last of her kind. (AUDIO: Renaissance (audio story)) However, Irving Braxiatel eventually altered the timelines, averting Romana II's regeneration into this incarnation so as to also avoid the war. (AUDIO: Enemy Lines (audio story)
Romana is an exceptionally clever (even on-par with the Doctor), slightly bossy person. She possesses many personality points of the Doctor. Like the Doctor, Romana is capable of using deadly force when necessary, although this has rarely been documented. (DW: The Pirate Planet)

In her first incarnation, she was more haughty and "by the book" and was occasionally annoyed by the Doctor's eccentricities. She does not mind taking on the form of Princess Astra of Atrios. (DW: The Armageddon Factor)
As shown in another set of accounts, with the War in Heaven looming on the horizon, Romana voluntarily regenerated into an incarnation "more suited to war", who adopted the title of "War Queen of the Nine Gallifreys", (PROSE: The Shadows of Avalon (novel)) copying the appearance of Miranda Pelham. (PROSE: Tomb of Valdemar (novel)) Her Gallifrey, which may or may not have been the original, (PROSE: Crimes Against History (short story), The Ancestor Cell (novel)) was destroyed by the Eighth Doctor in an effort to avert the War in Heaven, (PROSE: The Ancestor Cell (novel)) but she survived into old age. (PROSE: Tomb of Valdemar (novel))

In her second incarnation, Romana was more bubbly and free spirited, in many ways a female version of the Fourth Doctor. It was also evident that in her second incarnation, she liked to emulate the Doctor's sartorial style, initially wearing a pink version of his overcoat, complete with white scarf. (DW: Destiny of the Daleks)
Romana IV
Romana IV
Having survived the end of the War in Heaven, Romana III eventually regenerated into a fourth incarnation with dark eyes and clear ebony skin. (PROSE: Tomb of Valdemar (novel))

Although she was also seen wearing period Earth-style outfits such as a schoolgirl costume (DW: City of Death). She did on at least one occasion slip back into the haughty nature of her first incarnation. (DW: The Creature from the Pit)
Lord Romanadvoratrelundar
Romana (Time Fracture)
Nearing the point of Gallifrey's destruction, Romanadvoratrelundar was now in a new, non-binary incarnation. UNIT felt that if they survived the destruction of Gallifrey, they would be an ally in completing Operation Time Fracture. (PROSE: Lord Romanadvoratrelundar (feature))

Her third incarnation was not as positively disposed towards the Doctor, and it is said she regenerated as she felt her second incarnation wasn't ruthless enough to handle the coming war. (EDA: The Shadows of Avalon)
Working with the Tharils
Romana (The Little Book of Fate)
An incarnation of Romana worked with the Tharils to rescue refugees from a "forever war spreading through all time and space". (PROSE: The Little Book of Fate (short story))

The Doctor jokingly refers to Romana by saying that she "knows everything". (NSA: Wetworld)
Legacy
After the Time War, the Tenth Doctor found K9 Mark II, who informed him that he had been placed by Romana. Reuniting with Leela, the Doctor admitted that he missed Romana, whilst Leela acknowledged her as one of those who were "gone". (AUDIO: Splinters (audio story))

Other realities
In addition to "Trey" being ultimately erased from time, (AUDIO: Enemy Lines (audio story)) multiple accounts documented versions of Romana in other realities.

The Eighth Doctor saw a version of Romana in a projection built by the Matrix to show Gallifrey after being affected by anti-time. Romana had taken the title "Imperiatrix" and was much more ruthless than the Doctor expected. In the projection, she presided over the obliteration of a Dalek Fleet trapped in a time loop. (AUDIO: Neverland (audio story))

One version of Romana came from a Gallifrey where Time Lords were Interventionists, (AUDIO: Disassembled (audio story)) while another version came from a Gallifrey where the Time Lords were known as Regenerators, and had yet to discover time travel. (AUDIO: Forever (audio story), Emancipation (Gallifrey audio story))

In the Warrior's universe, Romana worked for the Difference Office during the Warrior’s Presidency in the Time War. (AUDIO: The Difference Office (audio story)) While she never travelled with the Fourth Doctor in this universe, (TV: The Ribos Operation (TV story) et al.) and did not have a close relationship with the Warrior, the two felt a strong degree of trust between each other, as if they were close friends. This Romana assisted the Warrior in thwarting a Kraal invasion of Gallifrey, led by Styggron, as part of an attempted mission by the Alliance to conquer the planet and end the Time War. (AUDIO: The Difference Office (audio story)) Another iteration of Romanadvoratrelundar originated from a version of the Warrior's universe and survived their universe's destruction, eventually fusing with a Dalek survivor from another destroyed universe into the Half-Dalek and joining the Collective Victorious. The Half-Dalek was ultimately trapped, along with the rest of the Collective, in the Great Lock of Time by the Warrior and Davros of the Warrior's universe, in order to stop the Collective's annihilation of the entirety of existence. (AUDIO: The Key To Key To Time (audio story))

Personality
Romana was exceptionally clever (even on par with the Doctor) and strong-willed. She shared many personality traits with the Doctor. She was capable of killing when necessary, though she didn't like it - when she shot one of the guards on Zanak, she instantly regretted it. (TV: The Pirate Planet (TV story))

In her first incarnation, she was haughty and "by the book" and occasionally annoyed by the Doctor's eccentricities. She did not mind taking on the form of Princess Astra of Atrios. (TV: The Armageddon Factor (TV story))

In her second incarnation, Romana was more bubbly and free-spirited, a female version of the Fourth Doctor. She liked to emulate the Doctor's sartorial style, initially wearing a pink version of his overcoat, complete with a white scarf. (TV: Destiny of the Daleks (TV story))

She also wore period Earth-style outfits such as a schoolgirl costume. (TV: City of Death (TV story)) She did on at least one occasion slip back into the haughty nature of her first incarnation. (TV: The Creature from the Pit (TV story))

Her third incarnation was not as positively disposed towards the Doctor. It is said she regenerated as she felt her second incarnation wasn't ruthless enough to handle the coming war. (PROSE: The Shadows of Avalon (novel))

The Tenth Doctor jokingly said of Romana that she "knows everything". (PROSE: Wetworld (novel))

Her third incarnation also appeared to have a sunny and perky disposition, and was prone to wanting to give people hugs (even her previous self, although the Blinovitch Limitation Effect made this inadvisable). Despite this, she could also be manipulative when necessary. (AUDIO: Renaissance (audio story))

Age
Age
Romana stated that she was "nearly 140" when she first met the Doctor (DW: The Ribos Operation). A while after she regenerated, she stated she was 125. (DW: City of Death) She was 150 by the time the Doctor was on Argolis (DW: The Leisure Hive).
Romana stated that she was "nearly one hundred and forty" when she first met the Doctor. (TV: The Ribos Operation (TV story)) A while after she regenerated, she stated she was one hundred and twenty-six. (TV: City of Death (TV story)) She was six hundred and fifty by the time the Doctor was on Argolis. (TV: The Leisure Hive (TV story)) She celebrated her sesquicentennial as Lady President of Gallifrey, meaning she had held the office for precisely one hundred and fifty years. (PROSE: The Ancestor Cell (novel))

This would mean that Romana travelled with the Doctor for over 10 years.
Romana III, a later incarnation of Romana, was "thousands of years" older than her second self. (AUDIO: Renaissance (audio story))

References
The author of A Brief History of Time Lords spoke highly of Romana in his book, flagging her, alongside Susan Foreman, as one of the most notable Time Lords who had run away from the Untempered Schism. (PROSE: A Brief History of Time Lords (novel))
When River Song crossed paths with the Fourth Doctor, she, in an attempt to preserve the integrity of the timeline, claimed to be a future incarnation of Romana. The bluff failed as, at the point in his life, the Fourth Doctor had not yet met Romana. (AUDIO: Someone I Once Knew (audio story))

Behind the scenes
Behind the scenes
*When Romana regenerates for the first time, she initially takes on several different forms before choosing that of Astra. Exactly why she is able to do this and not the Doctor has never been made clear, although some attempts at addressing this have been made, such as Doctor Who and The Parting of the Ways where the Doctor says humanoid regenerations aren't always guaranteed, and The Christmas Invasion in which it was revealed that a Time Lord's body remains in flux for hours after the regeneration, allowing, for example, the regrowth of a severed hand. It may be possible since Romana might have a high rank in The High Council of Time Lords she may have a privilege to chose what form she desires before she officially regenerates. It is also noted that after her regeneration she chose what appears to be a feminine version of the fourth Doctor's clothing (i.e. pink coat, white scarf).
* When Romana regenerated in Destiny of the Daleks, she was shown to be able to "try on" different "possibilities" before settling on that of Princess Astra. Indeed, the fact that she was able to replicate a person she'd met was an ability not seen in any regeneration before, and several stories attempted to address why this was possible.
*Romana also appears in the mini-episode Dimensions in Time, although this is not considered part of regular continuity, and the episode provides no clue as to where in Romana's personal timeline her appearance occurs (if it is even Romana).
** The Lying Old Witch in the Wardrobe posits that the different forms of "Romana" are actually the TARDIS in Time Lord form, pretending to be Romana.
*The revelation in DW: Utopia that the Master survived time war has led to subsequent fan speculation over whether certain female characters in the revived series might be a disguised Romana. This has included River Song (DW: Silence in the Library/The Forest of the Dead), Donna Noble (Season 4), and the character of Christina de Souza. The Doctor mentions that Christina de Souza looks like a Time Lord in the 2009 special Planet of the Dead and this has been the subject of speculation as to whether she has Time Lord connections or may, in fact, be Romana. This interpretation was addressed in the next season in an exchange between Amy Pond and the Doctor, in which he said to Amy, "No, you look Time Lord. We came first." (DW: The Beast Below). Most recently, The Woman from The End of Time was speculated to be Romana.

Romanadvoratrelundar — known in short as Romana — was a Time Lord who was assigned the task to assist the Fourth Doctor in his quest for the Key to Time. She stayed with him long after that task was done and parted from him in E-Space. When she returned to N-Space, she became the Lady President of the Time Lords of Gallifrey.

Name[[edit] | [edit source]]

Romanadvoratrelundar was a single, long name which Irving Braxiatel shortened to "Romana" when she was at the Time Lord Academy, although Braxiatel later removed all of her memories of him. (AUDIO: Lies [+]Loading...["Lies (audio story)"]) The Fourth Doctor too shortened it to "Romana", a name which she said she did not like and, when given the choice of being called "Romana" or "Fred", she told him to call her "Fred". (TV: The Ribos Operation [+]Loading...["The Ribos Operation (TV story)"])

The Doctor called her "Miss Dvoratrelundar" when she was a witness at his trial before the Megara. (TV: The Stones of Blood [+]Loading...["The Stones of Blood (TV story)"])

Biography[[edit] | [edit source]]

Romana I[[edit] | [edit source]]

Main article: Romana I

Early life[[edit] | [edit source]]

Romana was an only child (AUDIO: Neverland [+]Loading...["Neverland (audio story)"]) and member of the House of Dvora. (AUDIO: Panacea [+]Loading...["Panacea (audio story)"]) After the Imperator Crisis, the children of Dvora were scattered to Houses across the Homeworld; (PROSE: Newtons Sleep [+]Loading...["Newtons Sleep (novel)"]) Romana spent her childhood in the House of Heartshaven. (AUDIO: Panacea [+]Loading...["Panacea (audio story)"]) As a Time Tot, she had a copy of the Gallifreyan nursery book, Our Planet Story. (AUDIO: Shada [+]Loading...["Shada (audio story)"], PROSE: Shada [+]Loading...["Shada (novelisation)"]) She graduated with a "triple first" from the Time Lord Academy on Gallifrey. (TV: The Ribos Operation [+]Loading...["The Ribos Operation (TV story)"]) Her peers gave her the nickname and unofficial title of "The Ice Maiden." (AUDIO: The Inquiry [+]Loading...["The Inquiry (audio story)"], Lies [+]Loading...["Lies (audio story)"]) One of her early jobs was working in the Bureau of Ancient Records on Gallifrey. (TV: State of Decay [+]Loading...["State of Decay (TV story)"])

Travels with the Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

Romana first met the Doctor when she was a young (about one hundred twenty-five) and relatively inexperienced Time Lady. She had a haughty, aristocratic air and her personality did not always mix well with that of the Doctor.

The White Guardian sent Romana to help the Doctor and K9 Mark II locate the Key to Time. It was the Doctor who gave her the shortened version of her name. (TV: The Ribos Operation [+]Loading...["The Ribos Operation (TV story)"]) It was during this mission that she visited Earth for the first time. (TV: The Stones of Blood [+]Loading...["The Stones of Blood (TV story)"])

After the completion of the quest, the Doctor installed a randomiser in the TARDIS to evade the Black Guardian and his wrath. As a result, the travellers didn't know where they would materialise next. (TV: The Armageddon Factor [+]Loading...["The Armageddon Factor (TV story)"])

Regeneration[[edit] | [edit source]]

Romana regenerated into a new incarnation, seemingly on a whim, adopting the likeness of Princess Astra of Atrios. (TV: Destiny of the Daleks [+]Loading...["Destiny of the Daleks (TV story)"])

Accounts of the reasons for her first regeneration and the circumstances differed, though all agreed that in this incarnation, Romana adopted the likeness of Princess Astra of Atrios.

 • One account said that unknown to the Doctor, Romana was harmed by the Key to Time. (PROSE: The Lying Old Witch in the Wardrobe [+]Loading...["The Lying Old Witch in the Wardrobe (short story)"])
 • Another account said that Romana forced her own regeneration to prevent an ancient Gallifreyan evil called Pandora from gaining power over her. (AUDIO: Lies [+]Loading...["Lies (audio story)"])
 • A third account said that when the Key to Time was assembled without the sixth piece, it left Princess Astra and was absorbed by Romana. The strain forced a regeneration. (AUDIO: The Chaos Pool [+]Loading...["The Chaos Pool (audio story)"])
 • A fourth account said that Romana was simply fed up with the Doctor thinking that she was too serious and not any fun, so regenerated as a deliberate act of recklessness to prove him otherwise. (PROSE: City of Death [+]Loading...["City of Death (novelisation)"])

There was also an account that suggested that at some point after the installation of the randomiser in the Doctor's TARDIS but before the Doctor, Romana and K9 found themselves trapped in E-Space, Romana left the TARDIS. The Doctor and K9 continued to travel on their own for a time, (COMIC: Timeslip [+]Loading...["Timeslip (comic story)"]) even picking up a new companion along the way. (COMIC: Doctor Who and the Star Beast [+]Loading...["Doctor Who and the Star Beast (comic story)"]) Eventually, Romana returned to the Doctor and they resumed their travels together.

Travels with the Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

An adventure on the planet Skaro followed her regeneration, during which Romana encountered the Daleks. (TV: Destiny of the Daleks [+]Loading...["Destiny of the Daleks (TV story)"]) In this incarnation, Romana travelled for a time with the Doctor and K9. Leaving the randomiser behind on Argolis, (TV: The Leisure Hive [+]Loading...["The Leisure Hive (TV story)"]) the three accidentally passed through a CVE into the universe called E-Space. It was here they encountered Adric. (TV: Full Circle [+]Loading...["Full Circle (TV story)"]) Adric stowed away onboard the TARDIS and all the travellers were brought to an encounter with an ancient enemy of the Time Lords, the Great Vampire. (TV: State of Decay [+]Loading...["State of Decay (TV story)"]) Romana and the Doctor parted when she decided to remain in E-Space with K9 to help the enslaved Tharils regain their freedom. The Doctor and Adric left for N-Space, the Doctor's native universe. (TV: Warriors' Gate [+]Loading...["Warriors' Gate (TV story)"])

As Lady President[[edit] | [edit source]]

Romana returned to N-Space; one account suggested the Seventh Doctor made this possible. (PROSE: Blood Harvest [+]Loading...["Blood Harvest (novel)"]) She subsequently assumed a seat on the High Council of Time Lords (PROSE: Goth Opera [+]Loading...["Goth Opera (novel)"]) and later attained the office of President. She was at this time generally referred to by her full name and had Leela, K9 and Irving Braxiatel as her closest confidantes.

She was abducted by the Daleks, and kept prisoner for twenty years, barely escaping with her sanity intact, although an adventure shared with the Sixth Doctor helped her recover. (AUDIO: The Apocalypse Element [+]Loading...["The Apocalypse Element (audio story)"]) After this, she presided over Gallifrey in an ever-changing political situation where new time-active powers like the Monan Host were coming to prominence. (AUDIO: Panacea [+]Loading...["Panacea (audio story)"]) Romana, however, had a plan: explore alternate universes to find a new Gallifrey to live on. (AUDIO: Reborn [+]Loading...["Reborn (audio story)"]) Finally, Romana, Leela, and Narvin settled on a version of Gallifrey in which time travel was just beginning to be realised. Romana assumed the Presidency after the assassination of her alternate universe counterpart and appointed Narvin her chancellor. (AUDIO: Forever [+]Loading...["Forever (audio story)"])

Romana discovered a signal coming through time from the Axis, which she thought could be a way back to their home. When a portal from this signal opened in the Panopticon, she was greeted by Daleks. (AUDIO: Arbitration [+]Loading...["Arbitration (audio story)"]) Romana managed to prevent the Daleks' plan to invade the multiverse, and managed to return home to her own Gallifrey, complete with a cure to the Dogma virus. (AUDIO: Extermination [+]Loading...["Extermination (audio story)"]) Shortly after arriving on her own Gallifrey, Romana repelled a Dalek invasion of Gallifrey with her future incarnation by trapping them in the Matrix. She then set about rebuilding her Gallifrey, which was still crippled by disease and war. (AUDIO: Ascension [+]Loading...["Ascension (Gallifrey audio story)"])

Time War[[edit] | [edit source]]

In the timeline created by Irving Braxiatel averting her second regeneration aboard the Moros, Romana resigned as President and became Coordinator of the Celestial Intervention Agency, (AUDIO: Enemy Lines [+]Loading...["Enemy Lines (audio story)"]) which she was still serving as at the outbreak of the Last Great Time War. (AUDIO: Celestial Intervention [+]Loading...["Celestial Intervention (audio story)"]) The Tenth Doctor recalled that "things went well for Romana... until the Time War." (COMIC: The Forgotten [+]Loading...["The Forgotten (comic story)"])

Romana was exiled along with Narvin after a failed attempt to assassinate Lord President Eternal Rassilon. (AUDIO: Assassins [+]Loading...["Assassins (audio story)"]) She became caught up in the Dalek Emperor’s plot to seize Gallifrey by null space technology, after which Rassilon exiled her to a pocket dimension filled with Gallifrey’s archives to serve as an archivist. (AUDIO: Homecoming [+]Loading...["Homecoming (audio story)"])

Romana III[[edit] | [edit source]]

Main article: Romana III

Two sets of accounts documented two different fates for the incarnation following Romana II, both of which involved leading Gallifrey through a brutal war.

As she returned to her native Gallifrey after her adventures in the Axis, Romana II met a Matrix projection of her next incarnation, who adopted the nickname of "Trey" to avoid confusion. (AUDIO: Renaissance [+]Loading...["Renaissance (audio story)"]) In her own era, she led Gallifrey through a series of cataclysmic events that started with the return of Omega (AUDIO: Intervention Earth [+]Loading...["Intervention Earth (audio story)"]) and continued with a devastating war (AUDIO: Luna Romana [+]Loading...["Luna Romana (audio story)"], Enemy Lines [+]Loading...["Enemy Lines (audio story)"]) that eventually left Romana III as the last of her kind. (AUDIO: Renaissance [+]Loading...["Renaissance (audio story)"]) However, Irving Braxiatel eventually altered the timelines, averting Romana II's regeneration into this incarnation so as to also avoid the war. (AUDIO: Enemy Lines (audio story [+]Loading...["Enemy Lines (audio story"])

As shown in another set of accounts, with the War in Heaven looming on the horizon, Romana voluntarily regenerated into an incarnation "more suited to war", who adopted the title of "War Queen of the Nine Gallifreys", (PROSE: The Shadows of Avalon [+]Loading...["The Shadows of Avalon (novel)"]) copying the appearance of Miranda Pelham. (PROSE: Tomb of Valdemar [+]Loading...["Tomb of Valdemar (novel)"]) Her Gallifrey, which may or may not have been the original, (PROSE: Crimes Against History [+]Loading...["Crimes Against History (short story)"], The Ancestor Cell [+]Loading...["The Ancestor Cell (novel)"]) was destroyed by the Eighth Doctor in an effort to avert the War in Heaven, (PROSE: The Ancestor Cell [+]Loading...["The Ancestor Cell (novel)"]) but she survived into old age. (PROSE: Tomb of Valdemar [+]Loading...["Tomb of Valdemar (novel)"])

Romana IV[[edit] | [edit source]]

Main article: Romana IV

Having survived the end of the War in Heaven, Romana III eventually regenerated into a fourth incarnation with dark eyes and clear ebony skin. (PROSE: Tomb of Valdemar [+]Loading...["Tomb of Valdemar (novel)"])

Lord Romanadvoratrelundar[[edit] | [edit source]]

Main article: Romana (Time Fracture)

Nearing the point of Gallifrey's destruction, Romanadvoratrelundar was now in a new, non-binary incarnation. UNIT felt that if they survived the destruction of Gallifrey, they would be an ally in completing Operation Time Fracture. (PROSE: Lord Romanadvoratrelundar [+]Loading...["Lord Romanadvoratrelundar (feature)"])

Working with the Tharils[[edit] | [edit source]]

Main article: Romana (The Little Book of Fate)

An incarnation of Romana worked with the Tharils to rescue refugees from a "forever war spreading through all time and space". (PROSE: The Little Book of Fate [+]Loading...["The Little Book of Fate (short story)"])

Legacy[[edit] | [edit source]]

After the Time War, the Tenth Doctor found K9 Mark II, who informed him that he had been placed by Romana. Reuniting with Leela, the Doctor admitted that he missed Romana, whilst Leela acknowledged her as one of those who were "gone". (AUDIO: Splinters [+]Loading...["Splinters (audio story)"])

Other realities[[edit] | [edit source]]

In addition to "Trey" being ultimately erased from time, (AUDIO: Enemy Lines [+]Loading...["Enemy Lines (audio story)"]) multiple accounts documented versions of Romana in other realities.

(AUDIO: Neverland [+]Loading...["Neverland (audio story)"])

One version of Romana came from a Gallifrey where Time Lords were Interventionists, (AUDIO: Disassembled [+]Loading...["Disassembled (audio story)"]) while another version came from a Gallifrey where the Time Lords were known as Regenerators, and had yet to discover time travel. (AUDIO: Forever [+]Loading...["Forever (audio story)"], Emancipation [+]Loading...["Emancipation (Gallifrey audio story)"])

In the Warrior's universe, Romana worked for the Difference Office during the Warrior’s Presidency in the Time War. (AUDIO: The Difference Office [+]Loading...["The Difference Office (audio story)"]) While she never travelled with the Fourth Doctor in this universe, (TV: The Ribos Operation [+]Loading...["The Ribos Operation (TV story)"] et al.) and did not have a close relationship with the Warrior, the two felt a strong degree of trust between each other, as if they were close friends. This Romana assisted the Warrior in thwarting a Kraal invasion of Gallifrey, led by Styggron, as part of an attempted mission by the Alliance to conquer the planet and end the Time War. (AUDIO: The Difference Office [+]Loading...["The Difference Office (audio story)"]) Another iteration of Romanadvoratrelundar originated from a version of the Warrior's universe and survived their universe's destruction, eventually fusing with a Dalek survivor from another destroyed universe into the Half-Dalek and joining the Collective Victorious. The Half-Dalek was ultimately trapped, along with the rest of the Collective, in the Great Lock of Time by the Warrior and Davros of the Warrior's universe, in order to stop the Collective's annihilation of the entirety of existence. (AUDIO: The Key To Key To Time [+]Loading...["The Key To Key To Time (audio story)"])

Personality[[edit] | [edit source]]

The three Romanas. (AUDIO: Luna Romana [+]Loading...["Luna Romana (audio story)"])

Romana was exceptionally clever (even on par with the Doctor) and strong-willed. She shared many personality traits with the Doctor. She was capable of killing when necessary, though she didn't like it - when she shot one of the guards on Zanak, she instantly regretted it. (TV: The Pirate Planet [+]Loading...["The Pirate Planet (TV story)"])

In her first incarnation, she was haughty and "by the book" and occasionally annoyed by the Doctor's eccentricities. She did not mind taking on the form of Princess Astra of Atrios. (TV: The Armageddon Factor [+]Loading...["The Armageddon Factor (TV story)"])

In her second incarnation, Romana was more bubbly and free-spirited, a female version of the Fourth Doctor. She liked to emulate the Doctor's sartorial style, initially wearing a pink version of his overcoat, complete with a white scarf. (TV: Destiny of the Daleks [+]Loading...["Destiny of the Daleks (TV story)"])

She also wore period Earth-style outfits such as a schoolgirl costume. (TV: City of Death [+]Loading...["City of Death (TV story)"]) She did on at least one occasion slip back into the haughty nature of her first incarnation. (TV: The Creature from the Pit [+]Loading...["The Creature from the Pit (TV story)"])

Her third incarnation was not as positively disposed towards the Doctor. It is said she regenerated as she felt her second incarnation wasn't ruthless enough to handle the coming war. (PROSE: The Shadows of Avalon [+]Loading...["The Shadows of Avalon (novel)"])

The Tenth Doctor jokingly said of Romana that she "knows everything". (PROSE: Wetworld [+]Loading...["Wetworld (novel)"])

Her third incarnation also appeared to have a sunny and perky disposition, and was prone to wanting to give people hugs (even her previous self, although the Blinovitch Limitation Effect made this inadvisable). Despite this, she could also be manipulative when necessary. (AUDIO: Renaissance [+]Loading...["Renaissance (audio story)"])

Age[[edit] | [edit source]]

Romana stated that she was "nearly one hundred and forty" when she first met the Doctor. (TV: The Ribos Operation [+]Loading...["The Ribos Operation (TV story)"]) A while after she regenerated, she stated she was one hundred and twenty-six. (TV: City of Death [+]Loading...["City of Death (TV story)"]) She was six hundred and fifty by the time the Doctor was on Argolis. (TV: The Leisure Hive [+]Loading...["The Leisure Hive (TV story)"]) She celebrated her sesquicentennial as Lady President of Gallifrey, meaning she had held the office for precisely one hundred and fifty years. (PROSE: The Ancestor Cell [+]Loading...["The Ancestor Cell (novel)"])

Romana III, a later incarnation of Romana, was "thousands of years" older than her second self. (AUDIO: Renaissance [+]Loading...["Renaissance (audio story)"])

References[[edit] | [edit source]]

The author of A Brief History of Time Lords spoke highly of Romana in his book, flagging her, alongside Susan Foreman, as one of the most notable Time Lords who had run away from the Untempered Schism. (PROSE: A Brief History of Time Lords [+]Loading...["A Brief History of Time Lords (novel)"])

When River Song crossed paths with the Fourth Doctor, she, in an attempt to preserve the integrity of the timeline, claimed to be a future incarnation of Romana. The bluff failed as, at the point in his life, the Fourth Doctor had not yet met Romana. (AUDIO: Someone I Once Knew [+]Loading...["Someone I Once Knew (audio story)"])

Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]

The third incarnation of Romana ever introduced, in the board game Battle for the Universe.
