An Unearthly Child was a semi-released direct-to-audio novelisation based on the 1963 television serial An Unearthly Child. It was distinct from both the TV story and the Target print novelisation.

The audiobook was intended to be released in November 2013[1] but was delayed to February 2015[2] after AudioGO entered administration and subsequently closed. With the rights reverting back to BBC Worldwide, Random House became the new distributor of Doctor Who audiobooks. However, according to Michael Stevens, a "rights situation" was preventing the release of An Unearthly Child.[3]

As of 2023, the audiobook has not been distributed in its intended release. However, in 2013, the book was featured briefly in the catalogue of British Airways in-flight entertainment, meaning the story was released, just under odd circumstances and only very briefly. Today, it is considered lost to the public.

Publisher's summary[[edit] | [edit source]]

When schoolteachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright decide to investigate the home life of their unusual pupil Susan Foreman, they plunge into a nightmarish realm of eerie junkyards, impossible police boxes, and a crotchety old man who claims to be from another place and time. Read by William Russell, who played Ian in the original serial on which this book is based, this is a brand new audio novelisation of the first ever Doctor Who adventure, first broadcast in November 1963.[4]

Notes[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • In 2013, Peter Shaw listened to the audiobook as part of the in-flight entertainment on a British Airways flight. Nigel Robinson confirmed this and also revealed he has not heard the audiobook for himself.[5]
