Miranda Dawkins was the Eighth Doctor's adopted daughter and the supreme ruler of the universe in the far future. She was also the birth daughter of the Emperor, a future incarnation of the Doctor in a war-torn universe. (PROSE: Father Time)

Biography

Origins

Miranda's father the Emperor was a Time Lord, one of the last survivors of a catastrophe that ravaged Gallifrey, (PROSE: Father Time) and, in fact, as the Eighth Doctor realised when he and Marnal had a vision of the "four surviving elementals" in which they saw a new-born baby girl in the Doctor's arms as he sat on an ornate throne, a future version of the Doctor himself. On the night Miranda was born, he was allegedly assassinated. Two members of the Imperial staff, who took the names John and Kim Dawkins, spirited the infant to the village of Greyfrith on Earth in the late 1970s to keep her safe. (PROSE: Father Time)

Raised on Earth

The rebels travelled to the early 1980s while Miranda was young and killed her adoptive parents. The Eighth Doctor quickly stepped in to adopt her, raising her until she was sixteen. (PROSE: Father Time)

Taken to the Needle

When she was sixteen, the rebels returned to kill her as well. Miranda killed the leader of the rebels and fled. Three years later she was discovered again, but reached an understanding with the rebels after she rejected her would-be captor's assertion that strength would always prevail. She returned to the future to inherit her title as "supreme ruler of the universe". (PROSE: Father Time) She first spent a night in 1989, the night of the fall of the Berlin Wall, where she lost her virginity to a boy whose name she didn't know. A UFO then took her to the future for her rule to begin. (COMIC: Miranda) When she travelled through space and time to the alter-time realm of the Original Mammoths, Graelyn Scythes caught a glimpse of "a woman she’d never seen before in a Batman T-shirt standing by the Berlin Wall". As Empress of the Needle

Miranda was taken to the Supremacy on the Needle and declared empress of the universe, commander in chief of the Imperial fleets, custodian of the artefacts, mistress of the four keys, head of the galactic bank, and absolute ruler of the known and unknown planets. However, a servant warned her that the commander of her forces, Prefect Ferran, planned to marry her, use her bloodline to open the Librarinth, and kill her, so Miranda escaped with the help of Mack Gideon. As Empress, Miranda united the factions and houses on the Needle and ruled her empire peacefully. (PROSE: Sometime Never...)

After the unmaking of Auteur's Town, the various forces from the War Era universe and the 10,000 Dawns decided on the Needle as a neutral ground to gather to sign an official pact of mutual non-aggression, the Christmas Needle Agreement. As "Supreme Ruler of the Universe", "Miranda Dawkins the Last, Empress of the Universe, Commander in Chief of the Imperial Fleets, Custodian of the Artefacts, Mistress of the Four Keys, Head of the Galactic Bank and Absolute Ruler of the Known and Unknown Planets" was among the people to sign the Agreement itself, after serving as mistress of ceremonies during the negotiations.

She arrived at the ceremony still wearing her Batman T-shirt and jeans under her imperial regalia, which consisted of "a long ceremonial robe woven from gold and threads so black they vanished the light that trailed on the behind her, the tails held up by a pair of floating drones". During the rather boring negotiations, she tried to lighten the mood by telling a few amusing anecdotes about "her father", which were of keener interest to those in the know about his identity than to some of the visitors from the 10,000 Dawns, such as Graelyn Scythes. She had to politely ask the Original Mammoths to quiet down when they all trumpeted to celebrate Graelyn, whom they had symbolically made one of their own; however, Miranda muttered her relief when she heard the Mammoths say that Graelyn's induction was an even surer guarantee of peace in their eye than the signing of some paper document.

During the banquet which followed the official signing, Miranda talked with the Hollow Childe and Citizen 176, two young women who had been abducted as children by Auteur and Gideon and subsequently raised in the Town all their lives — meaning they now had no place to go. She gave them a new home in the Needle, an offer which they gladly accepted. (PROSE: White Canvas)

Death

Many years later, Miranda saw the threat of the Council of Eight to the universe, and travelled back in time to help the Doctor defeat them with her daughter, Zezanne. She sacrificed herself to avoid being used as a hostage, saving the Doctor from sacrificing himself instead. (PROSE: Sometime Never...)

Legacy

The Doctor kept a photo of Miranda in his wallet. While on Hitchemus, Fitz Kreiner found the photo and noticed that "there was something about [Miranda's] eyes that made him think of the Doctor". (PROSE: The Year of Intelligent Tigers)

When introducing Graelyn Scythes to her fellow companions of the Tourist, she specified that the Miranda who was a member of the crew was unrelated to the Miranda whom Graelyn had met previously. (PROSE: Birthdays are Made for Memories)

Personality

Miranda was incredibly gifted compared to the humans on Earth she grew up with. She often had mood swings in her teenage years that caught the Doctor off guard. (PROSE: Father Time)

Appearance

Many of Miranda's friends said that she looked like Jodie Foster. She was even played by Jodie Foster's daughter in a 2017 film. (PROSE: Father Time)

Behind the scenes

• Despite Father Time's original narrative rigidity, Parkin's later charity stories and The Gallifrey Chronicles imply that the Doctor and Miranda shared several "typical" Doctor Who adventures, albeit on a necessarily smaller scale.
