Slitheen family

The Slitheen were a family of Raxacoricofallapatorian criminals. The Slitheen were rivals (and "cousins") with the Blathereen family, cousins of the Rackateen Family and descendants of the Slavereen who were descended from the Changleen Family the earliest descendants of the Huspick Degenerate.

History

Early History

At some point in their history, the Slitheen joined the Alliance, an alliance formed to imprison the Doctor in the Pandorica in order to save the Universe. Slitheen spaceships arrived at Stonehenge in 102 A.D. along with the rest of the Alliance, but did not enter Under-Henge when several others locked the Doctor in the Pandorica. The Slitheen were from Raxacoricofallapatorius originally, and bribed their way into government. Their rule crashed the planet's economy and eventually the population rose up against them. (SJA: The Gift) Exposed, shamed, and arrested en masse in the Great Purge of Yon:556, the entire family was tried and found guilty, in perpetuity and given the death sentence. Many of the Slitheen fled justice, but the family continued to be hunted down by the Blathereen, Judoon and the Wrarth Warriors. 21st century

2000s

In March 2006 they disguised themselves as various Humans holding leadership positions and attempted to seize control of the UK government in an effort to start a nuclear war. Their ultimate aim was to turn the Earth into a huge nuclear reactor pile and sell its remains off as starship fuel. This attempt was foiled by the Doctor and his allies. Later the same year, in September, Blon, one of their surviving members, managed to get herself elected as Mayor of Cardiff, and tried to abuse her position to attempt to blow up Earth by destroying a local nuclear reactor. The the Rift would amplify the explosion where it would not only destroy Earth but enable her to escape the planet. This effort was also foiled by the Doctor and his allies. (DW: Boom Town)

In September 2008, another branch of the family took over a building company called Coldfire Construction and attempted to achieve the destruction of the Earth by shutting down the Sun. This group of Slitheen were eventually defeated by Sarah Jane Smith and her friends. Though Sarah did not mean to kill them, several ended up dead. Korst Gogg Thek Lutiven-Day Slitheen, a young Slitheen survived, but not his father. (SJA: Revenge of the Slitheen) In 2008, he teamed up with two other adult Slitheen to seek revenge and make the Moon crash into Earth. At some point in either early 2009, a young member of the family took the body of Ambassador Rahnius of the Galactic Alliance and attempted to steal K9 from Sarah Jane. (SJA: From Raxacoricofallapatorius With Love) Later on, two more Slitheen would attempt to crush the Earth into a giant diamond; they were thwarted and captured by two Blathereen, who sentenced them to death. Later 21st Century

A group of Slitheen returned to Earth in the late 21st century with hostile intentions but went home after a short time. (NSA: Snowglobe 7)

Post-21st Century

After these attempts, their fortunes started to wane. They were put out of business by the Blathereen, since they were cheaper and more effective. In the year 2501, Ecktosca and Dram discovered the activities going on in Justicia and attempted to take over the operations. They were captured, but later escaped with the help of the Doctor. After the death of Don Arco, they stole the surviving warp-hole technology to rebuild their fortune. (NSA: The Monsters Inside)

By the 347th century, the family were still exiled from Raxacoricofallapatorius, although they expected a reappraisal in the coming 1000 years. They were also involved in the Platonic War, being among those defeated by the Humans. As a form of revenge, they travelled back to early human history, when Greece was facing famine. They gave them food, in exchange asking for champions to fight for them. The Slitheen were actually running a temporal tourist tour, with aliens coming to see the sites of future monuments and with the Humans being killed for their entertainment. Their eventual plan was for the Humans become too dependent on them, never develop technology and never develop any advanced civilization. The Doctor and June tried to stop them peacefully, but instead the native Greeks fought back, destroying their time travel technology and throwing the whole organisation into chaos. Mamps, Cosmo and Leeb Slitheen escaped, but were trapped in the past. When their time-travel package tour appeared to kill a tourist, they were taken to court and bankrupted, with police being sent back to capture Mamps, Cosmo and Leeb. (NSA: The Slitheen Excursion)

The Pandorica Opens

At some point in their history, the Slitheen joined The Alliance formed to imprison The Doctor in the Pandorica in order to save the Universe, they arrived at Stonehenge, 102 A.D. along with the rest of the Alliance when the Doctor looks up at the Star Ships a Slitheen vessel, can be seen with the other star ships. Later they were not present when the Cyber Leader orders for the Pandorica to be closed and the Doctor was left helpless in the Pandorica. (DW: The Pandorica Opens).

The Alliance were all reduced to stone and dust by the collapse of reality. However, one Stone Dalek was revitalised by the energies of the Pandorica, and attacked the released Doctor and his allies. River Song destroyed it by shooting it in it's eyestalk.

The Alliance's plan failed however, and as a result, The Slitheen and several other species, including the Daleks, Cybermen, Judoon, Sontarans and all other members of The Alliance were wiped from existence, leaving only stone "after-images" behind. When the Doctor reset the universe and timeline, all members of The Alliance were restored to their original form and place in space and time. (DW: The Big Bang)

Cultural Details

The Slitheen placed great importance to hunting, which included the hunting of sentient prey. (SJA: Revenge of the Slitheen) They sometimes displayed joy at triumph by disrobing. (DW: World War Three) Blon said that the Slitheen used venom grubs to dispose of family members not willing to engage in criminal activities. (DW: Boom Town) A common tactic by the Slitheen to threaten their enemies in a confrontation is to grab one of them by the neck and threaten to kill them. (DW: Boom Town,SJA: The Lost Boy, The Gift)

Technology

The Slitheen have developed a method of disguising themselves as humans by first obtaining the skin of a dead human -- referred to as a skin suit -- and compressing themselves into it. In order for this to work the human victim needed to be heavy set, and the compression had a side effect: a gas exchange occurs which causes the disguised Slitheen to frequently expel gas with a sound similar to human flatulation. (DW: Aliens of London, SJA: Revenge of the Slitheen) In late 2008, the skin suit technology was improved to allow Slitheen to assume a greater variety of human body types, and the gas-exchange issue was eliminated. (SJA: The Lost Boy) It wasn't always initially used (SJA: From Raxacoricofallapatorius With Love, The Gift), but would remain the standard until at least 2501. (NSA: The Monsters Inside)

It is unclear whether the improved skin suits are artificially created, or if humans still need to be killed and their skins obtained.

In the 347th century, the Slitheen had molecular repurposing devices, remotely controlled ships and Time travelling technology stolen from the Navarinos. (NSA: The Slitheen Excursion)

Behind the scenes

• Of all the aliens created for the revived series, the Slitheen have been featured the most, having appeared in six television stories, two books and one short story.
• The Slitheen are the only aliens from the main series to have appeared more times on-screen in a spin-off show, having been featured in only four episodes (including the cameo in The End Of Time) of Doctor Who, yet appearing in five episodes (and one Comic Relief special) of the Sarah Jane Adventures.
• It has been announced that either the Slitheen or Blathereen will make an appearance in Series 4 but they will not have a large role. [1]
