Germany, also known as Deutschland (AUDIO: The Alchemists) was a country in central Europe, located between France and Poland.

History

Ancient history

During the time of the Roman Empire, the ancient Germans fought against the Roman forces and prevented the empire from conquering their home land. (PROSE: Warlords of Utopia) Arminius fought the Romans in a great battle near Wewelsburg in Westphalia. (PROSE: The Shadow in the Glass)

5th century

13th century

On 26 June 1284, the Pied Piper came down from the mountains of Hamelin to feed on the inhabitants' fear by taking the children away from their parents. (TV: The Day of the Clown) The children were kept in the Pied Piper's realm until the First Doctor, John and Gillian arrived and decided to help free them. 14th century

In the 16th century, the First Doctor and Susan Foreman visited Worms, where they encountered Martin Luther. (PROSE: The Price of Conviction)

In 1572, Germany was among the nations whose ambassadors attended a banquet in honour of the Abbot of Amboise at the Louvre in Paris, France. (PROSE: The Massacre ^[+]Loading...["The Massacre (novelisation)"])

18th century

King George II of the United Kingdom of England and Scotland hailed from Hanover in Germany. (TV: The Highlanders) Jamie McCrimmon, a Scottish Jacobite, once contemptuously referred to George II as "a German king". 19th century

The first carrier of haemophilia in Britain's royal family, Queen Victoria passed the disease on through the royal houses of Europe, including those of Germany, Spain and Russia. (PROSE: The Time Traveller's Almanac)

In 1898, the Eighth Doctor and Fitz Kreiner pretended to be German scientists when they visited Banquo Manor. (PROSE: The Banquo Legacy)

20th century

From 1914 to 1918, the German Empire was at war with Britain, her colonies, France and other countries in the First World War. German soldiers, as well as British troops, from 1917 were abducted by aliens and unwittingly took part in the War Games. At least one German soldier joined the resistance movement made up of people who had broken free of the War Lords' hypnosis. (TV: The War Games)

In October 1914, Germany bombarded Antwerp. Using her yacht, a British woman named Jessica Borthwick evacuated numerous Belgians across the English Channel while under German fire. (AUDIO: Brotherhood of the Daleks)

Although bound by treaty to Germany, Italy held back from the war for a year, before siding with the Anglo-French alliance against Germany in 1915. (PROSE: The Time Traveller's Almanac)

Defeat in the First World War led to political and social unrest and economic downturn in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1927, the Ninth Doctor visisted the set of Metropolis, mourning that its message of peace would be overwhelmed by the nation-wide anger that would give rise to Naziism. Hitler led Germany to war between 1939 and 1945, seeking to conquer Europe (starting with the invasion of Poland) and cleanse it of "sub-humans", communists and Jews, but failed after they lost the power of Timewyrm. (PROSE: The Taint)

CIA agent Rex Matheson found a record of a pulp fiction author in Germany who was potentially Victor Podesta following his disappearance in 1938. (TV: The Gathering)

Prior to World War II, the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany. (AUDIO: An Eye For Murder)

During World War II, when it appeared that the United Kingdom would be invaded by Nazi Germany, four citadels were built under the surface of London. They were intended to allow the British government to continue operations if the worst happened. After the war, the citadels were maintained due to the threat posed by the Soviet Union in the Cold War. (AUDIO: The Fifth Citadel)

The Institute of Alien Technology was taken over by Hans Grau and the SS. Its director, Dr Elbaum, was hunted and a few members were shot whilst the others were forced to work for the Reich. It was renamed Project Hermod. (AUDIO: The Dying Room)

Following the war, Germany was partitioned into East Germany, which was controlled by the Soviet Union, and West Germany, which was initially administered by the rest of the Allies. The same was true of its capital city Berlin. During the Cold War, a barrier known as the Berlin Wall separated West Berlin from East Berlin and East Germany as a whole. Democratic uprisings in the Eastern Bloc countries resulted in the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989 as well as the reunification of Germany and the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. 21st century

In the 2000s, the first Osterhagen Station was located sixty miles outside Nuremberg. During the time the Daleks moved and invaded Earth, Martha Jones used Project Indigo to teleport herself to a forest some sixty miles outside Nuremberg. While there, she saw Daleks patrolling the area and speaking in German while threatening the inhabitants. (TV: Journey's End)

In 2009, Colonel Augustus Oduya noted, among other places across Earth, Germany to have witnessed every human child being compelled to suddenly stop and proclaim their message: "we are coming" at 8:40AM GMT on a Wednesday in September. (TV: Children of Earth: Day One)

In 2011, Night Dragon Haulage regularly shipped goods to Germany. (TV: The Curse of Clyde Langer)

In 2050, the tenth German Moon mission took place. (TV: The Waters of Mars)

Later history

In the 22nd century, the Wronsdehj conquered Germany, along with the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Italy and France. They were eventually defeated by the Fourth Doctor and Romana I. (PROSE: Life from Lifelessness)

Alternate timelines

In the Game of Napoleon and Wellington, Germany was among the nations which were conquered by France and thus incorporated into Napoléon Bonaparte's World Empire. When the Empire collapsed upon Napoleon's death, Germany was among the conquered countries which were discreetly encouraged by the Players to "revert to type", spliting up into separate mini-states. Nazi Germany

In an alternative timeline accidentally created by the Seventh Doctor and Ace's arrival in Colditz Castle in October 1944, Nazi scientists used the laser technology contained in Ace's Walkman to refine uranium and create nuclear weapons. They subsequently bombed New York City and Moscow, forcing the surrender of the United States and the Soviet Union and winning Germany the war. This timeline was negated by an alternative version of the Eighth Doctor who, while posing as a German scientist named Johann Schmidt, fabricated a "flight log" for the TARDIS and manipulated Elizabeth Klein into travelling back in time to Colditz in October 1944 on the pretext of retrieving the Doctor so that he could teach her to pilot the TARDIS. Her lover Major Jonas Faber saw through Schmidt's trickery but was too late as Klein had already decided to disobey his orders and make the trip into the past. Unfortunately for Klein, her arrival in Colditz alerted the Seventh Doctor to the impending alteration of history and he and Ace were able to prevent it. (AUDIO: Colditz, Klein's Story)

In an alternative timeline in which Hitler did not lose the power of the Timewyrm, Germany had conquered the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe by 1941. After visiting the occupied London in May 1951 in this timeline, the Seventh Doctor and Ace prevented this from coming to pass. (PROSE: Timewyrm: Exodus)

Behind the scenes

The Brilliant Book 2011 detailed an alternate timeline to TV: Victory of the Daleks:

In an alternate timeline in which the Eleventh Doctor never found the Dalek Ironsides, they became fully operational, with the Battle of Britain lasting only one more week before the German Luftwaffe suffered crippling casualties, forcing them to retreat and turn their forces against the Soviet Union. Their underestimation of the strategic possibilities of the Ironsides cost them dearly; whilst their efforts were diverted elsewhere, the Ironsides landed on the Normandy beaches, travelling along the seabed of the English Channel to avoid detection. The original two Ironsides were joined by the third Dalek from the ship.

The conflict was brief and soon the three Ironsides were marching across France, clearing a path for the liberation of the towns along their way by British soldiers. The enemy's guns were unable to penetrate the Ironside's defences and their speed and mobility meant that the Nazis were forced to retreat back to Germany to prepare a final defence, allowing the Russians to spread across Eastern Europe at the other end of the allied pincer movement. Up until this moment, the United States of America had remained strangely silent, unwilling to commit forces to war that seemed impossible to win, instead steadily stockpiling their weapons until a tactically advantageous moment arose. But when the Japanese attempted to come to Germany's aid with a pre-emptive attack on Pearl Harbor, the Ironsides stepped in, taking on the enemy bombers in a vicious dogfight lasting two days. The American Navy was saved and President Harry S Truman bestowed the Ironsides with a medal of honour, finally agreeing to aid the British in the war effort. Two months later, the allied forces marched into Berlin, and the Nazi stranglehold was broken. (PROSE: The Ironside Advance)
