A tie was an article of clothing commonly associated with men's apparel on the planet Earth. Ties were worn for their style value, but could also signal levels of formality, association with particular schools, companies or other groups.[source needed] A tie was favoured by the Doctor in most of their incarnations.
The Doctor's ties
The Doctor regularly wore a tie of some form in most, though not all, of their incarnations.
First Doctor
The First Doctor almost always wore a wing collar with a navy blue ribbon bow tie. (TV: An Unearthly Child [+]Loading...["An Unearthly Child (TV story)"], The Daleks [+]Loading...["The Daleks (TV story)"], The Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV story)"]) On one occasion he wore an ascot tie that had a black-and-white checked pattern. (TV: The Rescue [+]Loading...["The Rescue (TV story)"], The Web Planet [+]Loading...["The Web Planet (TV story)"]) He also wore a coal black cravat up to his death. (TV: The Tenth Planet [+]Loading...["The Tenth Planet (TV story)"], Twice Upon a Time [+]Loading...["Twice Upon a Time (TV story)"])
Second Doctor
The Second Doctor typically wore a small, pre-tied bow tie, attached to his shirt with a safety pin. It performed the function of closing the top of his shirt, in place of a collar button. (TV: The Power of the Daleks [+]Loading...["The Power of the Daleks (TV story)"])
Third Doctor
The Third Doctor wore many ties. He often wore bow ties done in raven black, (TV: The Three Doctors [+]Loading...["The Three Doctors (TV story)"]) bottle green, (TV: Planet of the Daleks [+]Loading...["Planet of the Daleks (TV story)"]) wine red, (TV: The Green Death [+]Loading...["The Green Death (TV story)"]) cyan, (TV: The Time Warrior [+]Loading...["The Time Warrior (TV story)"]) Prussian blue, (TV: Planet of the Spiders [+]Loading...["Planet of the Spiders (TV story)"]) or ivory. (COMIC: The Lost Dimension [+]Loading...["The Lost Dimension (comic story)"]) He also wore cravats in ebony black, (TV: Doctor Who and the Silurians [+]Loading...["Doctor Who and the Silurians (TV story)"]) midnight blue, (TV: The Ambassadors of Death [+]Loading...["The Ambassadors of Death (TV story)"]) mahogany with paisley symbols, (TV: The Dæmons) or vermillion. (TV: The Mutants [+]Loading...["The Mutants (TV story)"]) His Prussian blue bow tie was his last neckwear before his fall. (TV: Planet of the Spiders [+]Loading...["Planet of the Spiders (TV story)"])
Fourth Doctor
The Fourth Doctor wore the Third Doctor's Prussian bow tie before switching for an emerald green tie. (TV: Robot [+]Loading...["Robot (TV story)"] - Terror of the Zygons [+]Loading...["Terror of the Zygons (TV story)"]) He also wore cravats, initially in green, (TV: Terror of the Zygons [+]Loading...["Terror of the Zygons (TV story)"]) blue and terracotta, (TV: Planet of Evil [+]Loading...["Planet of Evil (TV story)"], Pyramids of Mars [+]Loading...["Pyramids of Mars (TV story)"]) before settling on a maroon one. (TV: The Android Invasion [+]Loading...["The Android Invasion (TV story)"] - The Robots of Death [+]Loading...["The Robots of Death (TV story)"]) He also wore a ruby cravat, (TV: The Talons of Weng-Chiang [+]Loading...["The Talons of Weng-Chiang (TV story)"]), and also a cravat of ivory dupioni. (TV: The Invasion of Time [+]Loading...["The Invasion of Time (TV story)"] - The Pirate Planet [+]Loading...["The Pirate Planet (TV story)"])
Fifth Doctor
The Fifth Doctor did not generally wear a tie, preferring to wear his shirt open-collared. On one occasion, however, he dressed in early European-style finery and wore a layered cravat in his role as owner of the Tempus Fugit. (PROSE: The Crystal Bucephalus [+]Loading...["The Crystal Bucephalus (novel)"])
Sixth Doctor
The Sixth Doctor wore long cravats in a basic bow form in the style of the First Doctor, but his became wider at the ends with diagonal edges. Rather than being plain, they were either turquoise, (TV: The Twin Dilemma [+]Loading...["The Twin Dilemma (TV story)"]) crimson, (TV: The Mysterious Planet [+]Loading...["The Mysterious Planet (TV story)"]) periwinkle purple, (PROSE: Killing Ground [+]Loading...["Killing Ground (novel)"]) eggplant purple, (AUDIO: The Condemned [+]Loading...["The Condemned (audio story)"]) Prussian blue, (AUDIO: Project Lazarus [+]Loading...["Project Lazarus (audio story)"]) and one in midnight blue. (AUDIO: The Wrong Doctors [+]Loading...["The Wrong Doctors (audio story)"]) with polka dots, or mustard yellow with a starfield pattern. (TV: Terror of the Vervoids [+]Loading...["Terror of the Vervoids (TV story)"]) He also wore a navy bow tie with crimson polka dots with his 'Bletchley Tweeds', (AUDIO: Criss-Cross [+]Loading...["Criss-Cross (audio story)"], Quicksilver [+]Loading...["Quicksilver (audio story)"]) and also a black and grey striped necktie. (AUDIO: World Enough and Time [+]Loading...["World Enough and Time (audio story)"])
Seventh Doctor
Early in his incarnation the Seventh Doctor wore the Sixth Doctor's crimson cravat before switching for a scarlet paisley tie, (TV: Time and the Rani [+]Loading...["Time and the Rani (TV story)"] etc.) but later replaced it with a similar tie in burgundy. (TV: Battlefield [+]Loading...["Battlefield (TV story)"]) He wore a plain green cravat, (PROSE: White Darkness [+]Loading...["White Darkness (novel)"]) which he replaced with ties done in rust orange, (PROSE: Legacy [+]Loading...["Legacy (novel)"]) ruby, (PROSE: Sky Pirates! [+]Loading...["Sky Pirates! (novel)"]) sapphire blue, (PROSE: All-Consuming Fire [+]Loading...["All-Consuming Fire (novel)"]) lime green, (PROSE: Tragedy Day [+]Loading...["Tragedy Day (novel)"]) Prussian blue paisley, (PROSE: Strange England [+]Loading...["Strange England (novel)"]) or solid red. (PROSE: Original Sin [+]Loading...["Original Sin (novel)"]) He eventually adopted a bronze brown tie with an ebony black zig zag pattern by the end of his life. (TV: Doctor Who [+]Loading...["Doctor Who (TV story)"])
While in Perivale in 1883 at Gabriel Chase the Seventh Doctor deflected anticipated criticism from Ernest Matthews by saying, "Let me guess. My theories appal you, my heresies outrage you, I never answer letters, and you don't like my tie!" (TV: Ghost Light [+]Loading...["Ghost Light (TV story)"])
Eighth Doctor
The Eighth Doctor adopted a battleship grey dupioni cravat, starting with the Wild Bill Hickok costume he appropriated shortly after regeneration. (TV: Doctor Who [+]Loading...["Doctor Who (TV story)"]) He wore more cravats done in indigo, (COMIC: Dreadnought [+]Loading...["Dreadnought (comic story)"]) plum purple, (COMIC: Descendance [+]Loading...["Descendance (comic story)"]) amber, (COMIC: Ophidius [+]Loading...["Ophidius (comic story)"]) gold, (AUDIO: The Stones of Venice [+]Loading...["The Stones of Venice (audio story)"]) or emerald green. (AUDIO: Caerdroia [+]Loading...["Caerdroia (audio story)"])
In 1930, when he was aboard the R101 airship the Eighth Doctor was denied access to an area of the R101, he protested, "I'm wearing a tie!" (AUDIO: Storm Warning [+]Loading...["Storm Warning (audio story)"])
At the end of his life, he had switched to a four-in-hand ascot tie which he wore under his white shirt's collar. He felt he had "moved on" from cravats. (AUDIO: Planet of the Ogrons [+]Loading...["Planet of the Ogrons (audio story)"]) He wore ascot ties in flaxen yellow, (COMIC: The Pictures of Josephine Day [+]Loading...["The Pictures of Josephine Day (comic story)"]) eggplant purple, (COMIC: A Matter of Life and Death [+]Loading...["A Matter of Life and Death (comic story)"]) dark teal, (COMIC: The Lost Dimension [+]Loading...["The Lost Dimension (comic story)"]) sapphire blue, (AUDIO: He Kills Me, He Kills Me Not [+]Loading...["He Kills Me, He Kills Me Not (audio story)"]-Mutually Assured Destruction [+]Loading...["Mutually Assured Destruction (audio story)"]) ebony black (AUDIO: Meanwhile, Elsewhere-Previously, Next Time) or midnight blue. (TV: The Night of the Doctor [+]Loading...["The Night of the Doctor (TV story)"]) Evidently exhausted by the unrelenting conflict of the Last Great Time War, the manner in which he tied his ascot lacked attention to neatness and appeared hastily bundled on. (TV: The Night of the Doctor [+]Loading...["The Night of the Doctor (TV story)"])
War Doctor
The War Doctor wore his predecessor's midnight blue ascot tie for some time. (TV: The Night of the Doctor [+]Loading...["The Night of the Doctor (TV story)"], AUDIO: Light the Flame [+]Loading...["Light the Flame (audio story)"], WC: Doctors Assemble! [+]Loading...["Doctors Assemble! (webcast)"]) But he mostly wore scarves as neckwear, (COMIC: The Clockwise War [+]Loading...["The Clockwise War (comic story)"], The Lost Dimension [+]Loading...["The Lost Dimension (comic story)"], AUDIO: Light the Flame [+]Loading...["Light the Flame (audio story)"], PROSE: Engines of War [+]Loading...["Engines of War (novel)"], etc.) right up to his death after the Fall of Gallifrey. (TV: The Day of the Doctor [+]Loading...["The Day of the Doctor (TV story)"])
Ninth Doctor
Clive Finch owned a photograph of the Ninth Doctor in 1912 Southampton, in which he was dressed in era-appropriate formal wear including an ascot tie of burgundy brocade. (TV: Rose [+]Loading...["Rose (TV story)"]) Otherwise, this incarnation notably did not wear any neckwear with his usual attire; Hetty Warner noted this specifically and helped her identify him when she spotted the Doctor during the daytime. (AUDIO: The Oncoming Storm [+]Loading...["The Oncoming Storm (audio story)"])
Tenth Doctor
The Tenth Doctor usually wore four-in-hand ties of various patterns with his suits: one in dark chestnut brown with subtle flora woven pattern on, (TV: The Christmas Invasion [+]Loading...["The Christmas Invasion (TV story)"]) one in brown and blue tie with a woven geometric pattern, (TV: New Earth [+]Loading...["New Earth (TV story)"]) one in dark chocolate brown birds-eye weave with very subtle brown circles in a diagonal grid, (TV: School Reunion [+]Loading...["School Reunion (TV story)"]) one in dark brown tie with bold swirly woven design in light blue, (TV: The Girl in the Fireplace [+]Loading...["The Girl in the Fireplace (TV story)"]) one in blue a woven geometric pattern, (TV: Rise of the Cybermen [+]Loading...["Rise of the Cybermen (TV story)"]) one in brown tie with repeating s-shaped, (TV: The Idiot's Lantern [+]Loading...["The Idiot's Lantern (TV story)"]) one in navy blue tie with burgundy circles in diagonal grid, (TV: The Impossible Planet [+]Loading...["The Impossible Planet (TV story)"]) one in walnut brown with stylised peacock-eye blue and brown motif in honeycomb grid, (TV: Love & Monsters [+]Loading...["Love & Monsters (TV story)"]) one of burgundy herringbone with mauve random flora random design, (TV: Smith and Jones [+]Loading...["Smith and Jones (TV story)"]) one in deep navy blue with red flora random design, (TV: Daleks in Manhattan [+]Loading...["Daleks in Manhattan (TV story)"]) one in plain dark red, (TV: The Infinite Quest [+]Loading...["The Infinite Quest (TV story)"]) one in ribbed brown with a white and sky blue repeating stylised flora design in diagonal bands, (TV: Utopia [+]Loading...["Utopia (TV story)"]) one in brown with raised diagonal stripes of navy and light blue, (TV: Partners in Crime [+]Loading...["Partners in Crime (TV story)"]) one in burgundy with diagonal ebony black stripes, (TV: The Poison Sky [+]Loading...["The Poison Sky (TV story)"]) one in plain blue, (PROSE: The Mystery of the Haunted Cottage [+]Loading...["The Mystery of the Haunted Cottage (short story)"]) one in wood brown with semi-random floral design of cornflower blue flowers and bronze foliage, (TV: The Day of the Doctor [+]Loading...["The Day of the Doctor (TV story)"]) and a black and red striped design. (COMIC: Lady of the Blue Box [+]Loading...["Lady of the Blue Box (comic story)"])

In 2008, before they had met from her perspective, the Tenth Doctor got Martha Jones' attention in the street and dramatically took off his tie. He did this after they had met and experienced the story's events in his timeline, but before this in hers, as a "cheap trick" to prove he was telling the truth about time travel. (TV: Smith and Jones [+]Loading...["Smith and Jones (TV story)"])
When posing as John Smith, he wore a bow tie. (TV: Human Nature [+]Loading...["Human Nature (TV story)"], The Family of Blood [+]Loading...["The Family of Blood (TV story)"])
Eleventh Doctor
Following his regeneration and recovery, the Eleventh Doctor was pinned to a car by Amy Pond, who slammed the door onto the Tenth Doctor's tie to keep him from moving. After choosing a new outfit, he proclaimed that "bow ties [were] cool", and took to wearing them. (TV: The Eleventh Hour [+]Loading...["The Eleventh Hour (TV story)"], Amy's Choice [+]Loading...["Amy's Choice (TV story)"], Vincent and the Doctor [+]Loading...["Vincent and the Doctor (TV story)"], The Lodger [+]Loading...["The Lodger (TV story)"], The Big Bang [+]Loading...["The Big Bang (TV story)"]) While on Demon's Run, the Eleventh Doctor defended this belief on meeting Melody Pond. (TV: A Good Man Goes to War [+]Loading...["A Good Man Goes to War (TV story)"]) Amy would often insist that they were not as cool as he thought, and his successor admitted that the Eleventh Doctor's obsession with bow-ties was "a bit embarrassing." (TV: Time Heist [+]Loading...["Time Heist (TV story)"])
The Eleventh Doctor generally wore one of several red or blue bow ties with his usual outfit. He wore a tailcoat with a white bow tie on formal occasions, such as Rory and Amy's wedding (TV: The Big Bang [+]Loading...["The Big Bang (TV story)"]) and his own death by poisoning. (TV: Let's Kill Hitler [+]Loading...["Let's Kill Hitler (TV story)"])
The Doctor (actually the Teselecta which was disguised as him) untied one of his blue bow ties and used it to bind his and River Song's hands together in a handfasting as part of their wedding ceremony. (TV: The Wedding of River Song [+]Loading...["The Wedding of River Song (TV story)"])
