Tie

The Eleventh Doctor often wore bowties, which he said were "cool". (TV: A Good Man Goes to War ^[+]Loading...["A Good Man Goes to War (TV story)"])

A tie was an article of clothing commonly associated with men's apparel on the planet Earth. Ties were worn for their style value, but could also signal levels of formality, association with particular schools, companies or other groups. A tie was favoured by the Doctor in most of their incarnations.

The Doctor's ties

The Doctor regularly wore a tie of some form in most, though not all, of their incarnations.

First Doctor

The First Doctor almost always wore a wing collar with a navy blue ribbon bow tie. (TV: An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, The Dalek Invasion of Earth) On one occasion he wore an ascot tie that had a black-and-white checked pattern. (TV: The Rescue, The Web Planet) He also wore a coal black cravat up to his death. (TV: The Tenth Planet, Twice Upon a Time ^[+]Loading...["Twice Upon a Time (TV story)"])

Second Doctor

The Second Doctor typically wore a small, pre-tied bow tie, attached to his shirt with a safety pin. It performed the function of closing the top of his shirt, in place of a collar button. (TV: The Power of the Daleks)

Third Doctor

The Third Doctor wore many ties. He often wore bow ties done in raven black, (TV: The Three Doctors) bottle green, (TV: Planet of the Daleks) wine red, (TV: The Green Death) cyan, (TV: The Time Warrior) Prussian blue, (TV: Planet of the Spiders) or ivory. (COMIC: The Lost Dimension) He also wore cravats in ebony black, (TV: Doctor Who and the Silurians) midnight blue, (TV: The Ambassadors of Death) or vermillion. (TV: The Mutants) He sometimes wore jabots in plain white, (TV: Terror of the Autons) or patterned. (TV: The Dæmons) His Prussian blue bow tie was his last neckwear before his fall. (TV: Planet of the Spiders)

Fourth Doctor

The Fourth Doctor wore the Third Doctor's Prussian bow tie before switching for an emerald green tie. (TV: Robot - Terror of the Zygons) He also wore cravats; initially ones green, (TV: Terror of the Zygons) blue and terracotta in colour, (TV: Planet of Evil, Pyramids of Mars) before settling on a maroon one. (TV: The Android Invasion - The Robots of Death) He also wore a ruby cravat, (TV: The Talons of Weng-Chiang), and also a cravat of ivory dupioni. (TV: The Invasion of Time - The Pirate Planet)

Fifth Doctor

The Fifth Doctor did not generally wear a tie, preferring to wear his shirt open-collared. On one occasion, however, he dressed in early European-style finery and wore a layered cravat in his role as owner of the Tempus Fugit. (PROSE: The Crystal Bucephalus)

Sixth Doctor

The Sixth Doctor wore long cravats in a basic bow form in the style of the First Doctor, but his became wider at the ends with diagonal edges. Rather than being plain, they were either turquoise, (TV: Twin Dilemma) crimson, (TV: The Mysterious Planet) periwinkle purple, (PROSE: Killing Ground) eggplant purple, (AUDIO: The Condemned) Prussian blue, (AUDIO: Project: Lazarus) and one in midnight blue. (AUDIO: The Wrong Doctor) with polka dots; or mustard yellow with a starfield pattern. (TV: Terror of the Vervoids) He also wore a navy bow tie with crimson polka dots with his 'Bletchley Tweeds'; (AUDIO: Criss-Cross, Quicksilver) and also a black and grey striped necktie. Seventh Doctor

The Seventh Doctor's red tie. (PROSE: Original Sin)

Early in his incarnation the Seventh Doctor wore the Sixth Doctor's crimson cravat before switching for a scarlet paisley tie, (TV: Time and the Rani et al.) but later replaced it with a similar tie in burgundy. (TV: Battlefield) He wore a plain green cravat; (PROSE: White Darkness) which he replaced with ties done in rust orange, (PROSE: Legacy) ruby, (PROSE: Sky Pirates!) sapphire blue, (PROSE: All-Consuming Fire) lime green, (PROSE: Tragedy Day) Prussian blue paisley, (PROSE: Strange England) or solid red. (PROSE: Original Sin) He eventually adopted a bronze brown tie with an ebony black zig zag pattern by the end of his life. (TV: Doctor Who ^[+]Loading...["Doctor Who (TV story)"])

While in Perivale in 1883 at Gabriel Chase the Seventh Doctor deflected anticipated criticism from Ernest Matthews by saying, "Let me guess. My theories appal you, my heresies outrage you, I never answer letters, and you don't like my tie!" (TV: Ghost Light)

Eighth Doctor

The Eighth Doctor's cravat. (TV: Doctor Who ^[+]Loading...["Doctor Who (TV story)"])

The Eighth Doctor adopted a battleship grey dupioni cravat, starting with the Wild Bill Hickok costume he appropriated shortly after regeneration. (TV: Doctor Who ^[+]Loading...["Doctor Who (TV story)"]) He wore more cravats done in indigo, (COMIC: Dreadnought) plum purple, (COMIC: Descendance) amber, (COMIC: Ophidius) gold, (AUDIO: The Stones of Venice) or emerald green. (AUDIO: Caerdroia)

In 1930, when he was aboard the R101 airship the Eighth Doctor was denied access to an area of the R101; he protested, "I'm wearing a tie!" (AUDIO: Storm Warning)

Joe Smith, an alternate version of the Eighth Doctor, wore a question mark tie. (COMIC: The Glorious Dead)

At the end of his life, he had switched to a four-in-hand ascot tie which he wore under his white shirt's collar. He felt he had "moved on" from cravats. (AUDIO: Planet of the Ogrons) He wore ascot ties in flaxen yellow, (COMIC: The Pictures of Josephine Day) eggplant purple, (COMIC: A Matter of Life and Death) dark teal, (COMIC: The Lost Dimension) sapphire blue, (AUDIO: He Kills Me, He Kills Me Not-Mutually Assured Destruction) ebony black (AUDIO: Meanwhile, Elsewhere-Previously, Next Time) or midnight blue. (TV: The Night of the Doctor ^[+]Loading...["The Night of the Doctor (TV story)"]) Evidently exhausted by the unrelenting conflict of the Last Great Time War, the manner in which he tied his ascot lacked attention to neatness and appeared hastily bundled on. War Doctor

The War Doctor wore his predecessor's midnight blue ascot tie for some time. (TV: The Night of the Doctor; AUDIO: Light the Flame; WC: Doctors Assemble) But he mostly wore scarves as neckwear, (COMIC: The Clockwise War, The Lost Dimension, Four Doctors, The Whole Thing's Bananas; AUDIO: Light the Flame, The Innocent; PROSE: Engines of War) right up to his death after the Fall of Gallifrey. Ninth Doctor

Clive Finch owned a photograph of the Ninth Doctor in 1912 Southampton, in which he was dressed in era-appropriate formal wear including an ascot tie of burgundy brocade. (TV: Rose ^[+]Loading...["Rose (TV story)"]) Otherwise, this incarnation notably did not wear any neck wear with his usual attire; Hetty Warner noted this specifically and helped her identify him when she spotted the Doctor during the day time. Tenth Doctor

In 2008, before they had met from her perspective, the Tenth Doctor got Martha Jones' attention in the street and dramatically took off his tie. He did this after they had met and experienced the story's events in his timeline, but before this in hers, as a "cheap trick" to prove he was telling the truth about time travel. When posing as John Smith, he wore a bow tie. (TV: Human Nature ^[+]Loading...["Human Nature (TV story)"]/The Family of Blood ^[+]Loading...["The Family of Blood (TV story)"])

Eleventh Doctor

Following his regeneration and recovery, the Eleventh Doctor was pinned to a car by Amy Pond, who slammed the door onto the Tenth Doctor's tie to keep him from moving. After choosing a new outfit, he proclaimed that "bow ties [were] cool", and took to wearing them. (TV: The Eleventh Hour, Amy's Choice ^[+]Loading...["Amy's Choice (TV story)"], Vincent and the Doctor, The Lodger, The Big Bang) While on Demon's Run, the Eleventh Doctor defended this belief on meeting Melody Pond. (TV: A Good Man Goes to War ^[+]Loading...["A Good Man Goes to War (TV story)"]) Amy would often insist that they were not as cool as he thought, and his successor admitted that the Eleventh Doctor's obsession with bow-ties was "a bit embarrassing." (TV: Time Heist)

The Eleventh Doctor generally wore one of several red or blue bow ties with his usual outfit. He wore a tailcoat with a white bow tie on formal occasions, such as Rory and Amy's wedding (TV: The Big Bang) and his own death by poisoning. (TV: Let's Kill Hitler)

The Doctor (actually the Teselecta which was disguised as him) untied one of his blue bow ties and used it to bind his and River Song's hands together in a handfasting as part of their wedding ceremony. (TV: The Wedding of River Song)

He discarded his bow tie shortly before regeneration, deciding to let go of that attachment to this life. (TV: The Time of the Doctor)

Twelfth Doctor

While posing as a Clockwork Droid during the 1890s, the Twelfth Doctor wore a suit stolen from one of the robots that included a black cravat, but, upon choosing his regular attire, adopted a tieless look. (TV: Deep Breath ^[+]Loading...["Deep Breath (TV story)"])

When the Doctor and Clara visited the Orient Express in space he wore a cravat tied in the same manner as the ones he used during his first incarnation. (TV: Mummy on the Orient Express) He also wore a sapphire blue cravat in the 1814 frost fair. (TV: Thin Ice)

Thirteenth Doctor

The Thirteenth Doctor wore a bow tie with her tuxedo when she first meets the Master's spy incarnation. (TV: Spyfall)

Fourteenth Doctor

The Fourteenth Doctor wore a charcoal and silver knit tie, (TV: The Power of the Doctor) which he briefly replaced it with one in plain teal. (COMIC: Liberation of the Daleks) He eventually lost his knit tie in his bi-generation. (TV: The Giggle)

Fifteenth Doctor

Upon bi-generation, the Fifteenth Doctor ended up with the Fourteenth Doctor's knit tie. (TV: The Giggle) He also wore a silver tie during a visit to London during 1963. (TV: The Devil's Chord)

The Curator

The Curator, while taking the form of an older Fourth Doctor, wore ascot ties under his shirt's collar; one of navy and crimson paisley, (TV: The Day of the Doctor ^[+]Loading...["The Day of the Doctor (TV story)"]) and one in plain burgundy. (COMIC: The Then and the Now) While taking the form of an older Sixth Doctor, he wore a turquoise bow tie (AUDIO: Crossed Lines) and a cyan cravat with white polka dots. (AUDIO: The Artist at the End of Time) When he met Tania Bell after she moved into 107 Baker Street, he took the form of an elderly Eleventh Doctor, who was "all bow ties and elbows". Unbound Doctor

A parallel version of the Doctor wore a navy tie with white polka dots when he and Bernice Summerfield fought Faction Cybermen on Nazi Germany. (AUDIO: Blood and Steel)

The Warrior

The Warrior, a parallel version of the Fifth Doctor who looked as the Sixth, wore his predecessor's emerald tie before switching for scarves. (AUDIO: Dust Devil)

The UNIT Master

The UNIT Master sometimes wore ties when posing as men of business. (TV: Terror of the Autons)

The Tremas Master

When stranded on Cheetah World, the Tremas Master wore a midnight blue bow tie. (TV: Survival)

The Decayed Master

As John Smith, the Decayed Master wore a black cravat. (AUDIO: Master)

The Reborn Master

The Reborn Master wore kipper ties done in either plain black (AUDIO: Eyes of the Master) or striped black and pink. (AUDIO: Masterplan) While posing as the "Other Doctor", he wore a striped black and gold cravat or a down over a forest green tie in a basic bow. (AUDIO: Dominion)

The War Master

The War Master wore black cravats. (AUDIO: Only the Good, The Master of Callous, Day of the Master, Rage of the Time Lords) He also wore a burgundy bow tie. (AUDIO: The Sincerest Form of Flattery, A Quiet Night In, The Orphan, Unfinished Business)

The Saxon Master

The Saxon Master wore the War Master's black cravat in his first hours. (TV: Utopia) When posing as Harold Saxon, he wore skinny ties. (TV: Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords)

Missy

Missy, the Master's feminine incarnation, wore a fern green brocade cravat. (TV: Extremis-The Doctor Falls)

The Spy Master

When posing as O, the Spy Master wore a black bow tie. (TV: Spyfall) He also wore a copy of the Tenth Doctor's tie when processing the Thirteenth Doctor's body as part of his masterplan. (TV: The Power of the Doctor)

Companions

Ian Chesterton often wore a four-in-hand tie while travelling with the First Doctor. On Vortis, the Doctor used Ian's Coal Hill School tie to test an unknown liquid, finding it to be acid. Ian was momentarily more concerned about the loss of his tie than the fact that his life had just been saved. (TV: The Web Planet) During a meeting with companions, he wore a burgundy tie. Vislor Turlough continued to wear his Brendon Public School uniform, complete with school tie and wing collar, through most of his travels with the Fifth Doctor. (TV: Mawdryn Undead)

Jenny Flint wore cravats with her waistcoats and her shirts. (TV: A Good Man Goes to War ^[+]Loading...["A Good Man Goes to War (TV story)"], Deep Breath ^[+]Loading...["Deep Breath (TV story)"]; PROSE: The Dangerous Dilemma of the Dream Doorway; COMIC: The Lost Dimension)

Bill Potts wore an ivory cravat during her trip to the 1814 frost fair. (TV: Thin Ice)

Ace wore an ivory bow tie with her tuxedo within Gabriel Chase on 1883. (TV: Ghost Light)

Albert Dumfries, a senior member of the Cabinet of Harold Saxon, wore a crimson tie with navy stripes up to when he was killed by the Saxon Master before the Toclafane Invasion of Earth. (TV: The Sound of Drums)

Artie Berger, a piano musician, wore a crimson tie with gold stripes when helping to capture a sound monster on 1946. (AUDIO: Fright Motif)
