(PROSE: {{cs|Have You Seen This Man? (AUDIO: The Oncoming Storm (audio story))

In 2008, before they had met from her perspective, the Doctor got Martha Jones' attention in the street and dramatically took off his tie. Tie

A tie was an article of clothing commonly associated with men's apparel on the planet Earth. Ties were worn for their style value, but could also signal levels of formality, association with particular schools, companies or other groups.[source needed]

The Doctor's ties[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Doctor regularly wore a tie of some form in most, though not all, of their incarnations.

First Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

The First Doctor almost always wore a wing collar with a navy blue ribbon bow tie. (TV: An Unearthly Child [+]Loading...["An Unearthly Child (TV story)"], The Daleks [+]Loading...["The Daleks (TV story)"], The Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV story)"]) On one occasion he wore an ascot tie that had a black-and-white checked pattern. (TV: The Rescue [+]Loading...["The Rescue (TV story)"], The Web Planet [+]Loading...["The Web Planet (TV story)"]) He also wore a black cravat up to his death. (TV: The Tenth Planet [+]Loading...["The Tenth Planet (TV story)"], Twice Upon a Time [+]Loading...["Twice Upon a Time (TV story)"])

Second Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Second Doctor typically wore a small, pre-tied bow tie, attached to his shirt with a safety pin. It performed the function of closing the top of his shirt, in place of a collar button. (TV: The Power of the Daleks [+]Loading...["The Power of the Daleks (TV story)"])

Third Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Third Doctor wore many ties. He often wore bow ties done in black, (TV: The Three Doctors [+]Loading...["The Three Doctors (TV story)"]) green, (TV: Planet of the Daleks [+]Loading...["Planet of the Daleks (TV story)"]) red, (TV: The Green Death [+]Loading...["The Green Death (TV story)"]) cyan, (TV: The Time Warrior [+]Loading...["The Time Warrior (TV story)"]) Prussian blue, (TV: Planet of the Spiders [+]Loading...["Planet of the Spiders (TV story)"]) or white. (TV: Planet of the Spiders [+]Loading...["Planet of the Spiders (TV story)"])

Fourth Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

He also wore a cravat of ivory dupioni during the Sontaran Invasion of Gallifrey, (TV: The Invasion of Time [+]Loading...["The Invasion of Time (TV story)"]) when he met the White Guardian and Romana I as well as when he went to Ribos, (TV: The Ribos Operation [+]Loading...["The Ribos Operation (TV story)"]) and when foiling Queen Xanxia and the Captain on Zanak and Calufrax during 1978. The Fifth Doctor did not generally wear a tie, preferring to wear his shirt open-collared. On one occasion, however, he dressed in early European-style finery and wore an ivory cravat in his role as owner of the Tempus Fugit. (PROSE: The Crystal Bucephalus [+]Loading...["The Crystal Bucephalus (novel)"])

Sixth Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Sixth Doctor wore long cravats in a basic bow form in the style of the First Doctor, but his became wider at the ends with diagonal edges. Rather than being plain, they were either turquoise, (TV: The Twin Dilemma [+]Loading...["The Twin Dilemma (TV story)"]) crimson, (TV: The Mysterious Planet [+]Loading...["The Mysterious Planet (TV story)"]) purple, (PROSE: Killing Ground [+]Loading...["Killing Ground (novel)"]) purple, (AUDIO: The Condemned [+]Loading...["The Condemned (audio story)"]) Prussian blue, (AUDIO: Project Lazarus [+]Loading...["Project Lazarus (audio story)"]) and one in midnight blue. Seventh Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Seventh Doctor's red tie. (PROSE: Original Sin [+]Loading...["Original Sin (novel)"])

Early in his incarnation the Seventh Doctor wore the Sixth Doctor's crimson cravat before switching for a scarlet paisley tie, (TV: Time and the Rani [+]Loading...["Time and the Rani (TV story)"] etc.) but later replaced it with a similar tie. (TV: Battlefield [+]Loading...["Battlefield (TV story)"]) He wore a plain green cravat, (PROSE: White Darkness [+]Loading...["White Darkness (novel)"]) which he replaced with ties done in rust orange, (PROSE: Legacy [+]Loading...["Legacy (novel)"]) ruby, (PROSE: Sky Pirates! (PROSE: Original Sin [+]Loading...["Original Sin (novel)"]) He eventually adopted a bronze brown tie with a black zig zag pattern, (AUDIO: Dark Universe [+]Loading...["Dark Universe (audio story)"]-The Last Day [+]Loading...["The Last Day (TV story)"]) and right up to his end. (TV: Doctor Who [+]Loading...["Doctor Who (TV story)"])

While in Perivale in 1883 at Gabriel Chase the Seventh Doctor deflected anticipated criticism from Ernest Matthews by saying, "Let me guess. My theories appal you, my heresies outrage you, I never answer letters, and you don't like my tie!" (TV: Ghost Light [+]Loading...["Ghost Light (TV story)"])

Eighth Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Eighth Doctor's cravat. (TV: Doctor Who [+]Loading...["Doctor Who (TV story)"])

(TV: Doctor Who [+]Loading...["Doctor Who (TV story)"]) He wore more cravats done in indigo, (COMIC: Dreadnought [+]Loading...["Dreadnought (comic story)"]) purple, (COMIC: Descendance [+]Loading...["Descendance (comic story)"]) amber, (COMIC: Ophidius [+]Loading...["Ophidius (comic story)"]) gold, (AUDIO: The Stones of Venice [+]Loading...["The Stones of Venice (audio story)"]) or emerald green. (AUDIO: Caerdroia [+]Loading...["Caerdroia (audio story)"])

In 1930, when the Eighth Doctor was denied access to an area of the R101 airship, he protested, "I'm wearing a tie!" (AUDIO: Storm Warning [+]Loading...["Storm Warning (audio story)"])

At the end of his life, he had switched to a four-in-hand ascot tie which he wore under his white shirt's collar. He felt he had "moved on" from cravats.
