Sam Jones (disambiguation)
for other, similarly-named pages.
Samantha Angeline Jones, usually called Sam Jones, was an individual whose entire timeline was altered by Faction Paradox to make her a perfect companion for the Eighth Doctor. (PROSE: Interference - Book One) In fact, it was Sam's encounter with the Eighth Doctor shortly after his regeneration that allowed her life to be altered; "[the Doctor's] unsettled biodata came into contact with [Sam's biodata] and changed it, regenerating her past, present, and future and turning [Sam] into [a different person]".
Two versions of Sam existed: one who never travelled with the Doctor and one who did. (PROSE: Unnatural History)
Samantha Jones was a vegetarian. She hated drugs and didn't even drink Coca-Cola. She knew the Doctor's real name. (PROSE: Vanderdeken's Children)
Biography of original Sam
Born on 15 April 1980, Samantha Lynne Jones had a very troubled childhood. In her teenage years, she was a drug user and had the needle scars on her arms to prove it. She lived in a bedsit in King's Cross, London. She wrote letters to Amnesty while in high school and thought about spray painting a billboard. She left home in 1997, and worked in a video shop up to 2002. She smoked Benson & Hedges cigarettes, and had used ecstasy more than once. She saw the Lord of the Rings movie, but didn't think much of it.
Then she met the Eighth Doctor. He had come searching for his friend. He explained to her about the dimensional scar in San Francisco that his TARDIS had become a part of.
He convinced her to accompany him back to San Francisco after her parents showed her a series of postcards they had been receiving from a Samantha Jones, including one showing a blonde Samantha Jones and the Doctor from a photobooth on Paphos.
Whilst in San Francisco she attempted to seduce the Doctor, was captured by Griffin, an unnaturalist, and had sex several times with Fitz Kreiner.
After several days of getting to know the Doctor and Fitz's worlds, and encountering effects of the Wild Hunt (an energy pulse washing out in a reverse ripple from the scar that made her experience her alternate timelines and also altered her biodata), she ran into the scar, altering her timeline greatly. (PROSE: Unnatural History)
The new Sam occasionally had visions of her other self. (PROSE: Alien Bodies, Seeing I)
After the Council of Eight undid all the alterations to Sam's timeline, she died of a drug overdose in 2002. (PROSE: Sometime Never..., The Gallifrey Chronicles) The Eighth Doctor, Fitz Kreiner, and Trix MacMillan once visited Sam's grave. (PROSE: The Gallifrey Chronicles)
Biography of altered Sam
Early life
Born on 15 April 1980, (PROSE: Unnatural History) Samantha Angeline Jones was raised by progressive parents who instilled their values in her.
When remembering her life before meeting the Doctor, Sam once said, "Everytime I saw an advert for some campaign to go save whales, stop animal experiments, go on gay-liberation marches, or demonstrate against racism, I was there. I used to go and join people sitting in trees, stopping motorways, bypasses, and airport runways being built." (PROSE: Placebo Effect)
By 1996, Sam was attending Coal Hill School. In this year, Sarah Jane Smith came to Sam's house looking for Sam's future self. After spying on Sam in the attic with her friends, Sarah realised that Sam had not yet travelled with the Doctor and tried to quietly leave. This was made impossible when an Ogron broke into Sam's house following Sarah. Sarah got the Ogron out of the house before Sam could see it, but not without damaging some of the furniture and injuring Sam's dad. (PROSE: Interference - Book One) Later, Sam was approached in her attic by the Eighth Doctor in a James Stewart mask. (PROSE: Interference - Book Two)
Beginning of her travels with the Doctor
Needs info from The Eight Doctors, The People's Temple, Bounty
She was sixteen when she first met the the Eighth Doctor in Totter's Yard. She met the Eighth Doctor in 1997 whilst running from a group of drug dealers. (PROSE: The Eight Doctors) Based on a passage from the Book of Lies, the boy from Faction Paradox posited that the "Great Grey Eminence" had rewritten history so the Eighth Doctor would travel with Sam rather than someone who would want to "screw" him. (PROSE: Unnatural History)
Sam spent an afternoon renovating Nyssa's old TARDIS bedroom into her own bedroom. (PROSE: Vampire Science, The Bodysnatchers)
Early in their travels, the Doctor took Sam to Fleeble 14. Sam would later mail her parents a holographic card from Fleeble 14. (PROSE: Unnatural History) Around this time, they also hunted down a horde of vampires in 1976 San Francisco, meeting Carolyn McConnell in the process.
Sometime later, Sam and the Doctor were summoned back to San Francisco - this time in 1997 - by McConnell after she suspected that vampires were responsible for another spate of killings. Sam, the Doctor, and McConnell worked with Adrienne Kramer and the American division of UNIT to eradicate Weird Harold's gang of vampires. (PROSE: Vampire Science)
The Doctor brought Sam to 1894 London, where she met the Doctor's old friend George Litefoot. She also encountered the Doctor's old enemies the Zygons, who kidnapped her and tried to trick the Doctor by having Tuval impersonate Sam. The Doctor saw through Tuval and rescued Sam from the Zygon ship before stopping their plan to take over Earth with Skarasen. (PROSE: The Bodysnatchers) Before leaving London, Sam put a letter in the post which would be delivered to her parents in 1997. (PROSE: Unnatural History)
Shortly afterwards, Sam met another old friend of the Doctor during an incident involving the Tractites attempting to take humanity's place in the timeline by using a Time Tree to travel to Earth's prehistory. With the Time Tree, Jo Jones travelled thousands of years in the past and helped Sam and the Doctor stop the Tractites. (PROSE: Genocide)
Sam and the Doctor landed on Skaro and became involved in a power struggle between Davros and the Dalek Prime. (PROSE: War of the Daleks)
Seven months, three weeks, and six days after Sam began travelling with the Doctor, he took her to an auction for his own dead body in the East Indies ReVit Zone in 2069. After Little Brother Manjuele took over Kathleen Bregman's mind, Sam followed Bregman to the Relic. While Bregman succumbed to the biodata defences surrounding the Relic, Sam's unique nature allowed her to be mostly unharmed. She had a vision of her other self at a bedsit near King's Cross station. The Doctor ended up winning the auction. When Sam was asleep in the TARDIS, the Doctor landed on Quiescia and destroyed the Relic. (PROSE: Alien Bodies)
A trip to Saturnia Regna took a turn for the worse when - after allying with a protest group trying to stop GrayCorp from terraforming the planet into a theme park called Kursaal - Sam was bitten by Maximilian Gray and infected with the werewolf-like Jax virus. Under the influence of the virus, Sam asked the Doctor to take her 15 years into the planet's future, when it was a popular theme park. There, Sam began transforming into the Jax leader. She tried to turn everyone in the park into Jax, but was stopped by the Doctor, who helped her fight off the virus. This experience left Sam not only physically weakened, but also wracked with the guilt of killing an innocent. (PROSE: Kursaal)
The Doctor and Sam spent the next few weeks recovering from Kursaal. They visited a couple paradise resorts, went on a tour of the monuments of Marsuum, and went mountain climbing on Julana. (PROSE: Option Lock) Around this time, during a visit to Earth, Sam mailed her parents a postcard she bought at Kursaal. (PROSE: Unnatural History)
The recuperation came to an end when the TARDIS fell out of the vortex into the estate of Norton Silver in 1998 England. At first, Sam and the Doctor enjoyed Silver's hospitality, but they came to realise that he was part of a cabal infected with Khameirian essence who were trying to start a nuclear war. Sam and the Doctor had a final confrontation with Silver on Station Nine which ended with William Pickering sacrificing himself to destroy the Khameirian's power. (PROSE: Option Lock)
The Doctor and Sam visited Paphos and took a picture of themselves in a photo-booth. Sam mailed this picture to her parents. (PROSE: Unnatural History)
Stranded in the 23rd century
Needs info from Dreamstone Moon, Seeing I
The Doctor detected strange temporal activity coming from Hirath in 2202 and landed his TARDIS on a moonbase just outside of the influence of the planet's distortions. The Doctor and Sam were separated when Kusks attacked the base looking to go on Hirath's surface. When Sam - who had escaped by transmatting into a Hirath penal colony - managed to transmat back to the moonbase, she found the Doctor's lifeless body surrounded by piles of dead Kusks. Thinking the Doctor dead, Sam left the moonbase with Anstaar in a stolen Kusk ship to avoid being stranded on Hirath's moon. (PROSE: Longest Day)
Sam spent three years on the planet Ha'olam, making her about twenty-one when she re-encountered the Doctor and began travelling with him again. (PROSE: Seeing I)
Avoiding Earth
Needs info from Vanderdeken's Children, The Scarlet Empress, The Janus Conjunction, Beltempest, The Face-Eater, Dead Time, The Queen of Eros
For six months, Sam and the Doctor travelled through time and space without visiting Earth. (PROSE: The Taint) According to some accounts, they did visit Earth during this period. (PROSE: Femme Fatale, Placebo Effect)
Sam and the Doctor stopped the smugglers of Nephelokokkugian, foiled the Dalek invasion of Tuvalu, (PROSE: Unnatural History) returned a handkerchief the Doctor had stolen from Tudor England in an old body, saw the skating rink at Rockefeller Center, ran away from Psionovores, (PROSE: Placebo Effect) and attended an opera on Thurakzima 7. (PROSE: The Janus Conjunction)
Three months after leaving Ha'olam, the Doctor took Sam to Micawber's World to attend the wedding of his previous companions Stacy Townsend and Ssard, but they became caught up in the plans of two separate alien factions - the Wirrrn and the Foamasi - to take advantage of the 3999 Galactic Olympics being held on Micawber's World. Sam investigated the Church of the Way Forward and learned that the goddess they worshipped was the Wirrrn Queen. With Sam's information, the Doctor was able to stop the Wirrrn plot to infect all of the Olympic atheletes. (PROSE: Placebo Effect)
Whilst on the planet Hyspero she met (and got along brilliantly with) Iris Wildthyme. (PROSE: The Scarlet Empress) She died from radiation on Janus Prime, melting into a puddle on Menda. The Doctor later saved her by using a temporal orbit. (PROSE: The Janus Conjunction)
Four months after leaving Hyspero, Sam and the Doctor visited 1968 New York City and encountered Andy Warhol and Iris Wildthyme. (PROSE: Femme Fatale)
With Fitz
Needs info from Demontage, Revolution Man, Dominion, Unnatural History, Autumn Mist, Interference - Book One, Interference - Book Two
Six months after leaving Ha'olam, the TARDIS finally arrived on Earth, London in the summer of 1963 to be precise. Sam and the Doctor became involved in Dr Charles Roley's study on a group of asylum patients with abnormal growths in their brains. Fitz Kreiner, the son of one of Roley's patients, met and developed a friendship with Sam and the Doctor.
After a date with Fitz at Molly's in which she became increasingly perturbed at Fitz's "outdated" attitudes, Sam was kidnapped by Azoth and taken to a cave beneath Bethnal Green. Sam's biology was altered to make her able to see the Beast. She escaped and told the Doctor what she had been through. He realised what was going on and was able to save Sam from being killed by Azoth's alterations, but he wasn't fast enough to save the patients. He was forced to kill them. Suspected of murder by the police and without any living family left, Fitz joined the Doctor and Sam in their travels.
The TARDIS team then travelled to London in 2134 to check if there were any signs of the Beast left. (PROSE: The Taint)
In San Francisco, she encountered a dimensional scar that altered her timeline, reworking it and creating the established timeline she experienced with the Doctor. Although Sam was somewhat reluctant after her date (PROSE: Unnatural History)
Sam chose to leave the Doctor while on 1996 Earth, about a year before her younger self first left Earth with the Doctor. To preserve the timeline, Sam planned to stay with and assist Sarah Jane Smith for that year and then go home to her parents the day after her younger self left despite being six years older than the last time they'd have seen her. (PROSE: Interference - Book Two)
Later life
Sam founded the Black Seed Movement and stayed good friends with Sarah Jane. Sam gave a speech at Sarah Jane's wedding with Paul Morley.
On 31 December 1999, Sam celebrated New Year's Eve with Sarah Jane and Paul. Sam wore a T-shirt that said, "not celebrating millennium until 2001". (PROSE: Interference - Book One)
Erasure and legacy
The Council of Eight undid the changes done to Sam's biodata, reverting her to her original self. (PROSE: Sometime Never...)
A person matching Sam's description was briefly seen by Charlotte Pollard while aboard the airship in the heart of the Time Vortex, its inhabitants kept in a limbo-like state having been removed from the timeline by the Doctor to preserve the Web of Time. (PROSE: Repercussions)
Characteristics
She thought herself a pacifist, but had killed people: a Tractite and a human, the second when she was being controlled. (PROSE: Genocide, Kursaal) She was still shocked by extreme forms of violence and believed that such direct action should be beneath the Doctor. (PROSE: Revolution Man)
Appearance
In her original timeline, Sam had dark hair, needle scars along her arms and not a lot of muscle tone in her legs. (PROSE: Unnatural History)
In her second timeline, she had short blonde hair. She ran a few kilometres every day, either through the TARDIS or around wherever she and the Doctor landed. (PROSE: Option Lock)
She was sixteen when she began travelling with the Doctor, but she spent three years on Ha'olam, making her twenty-one (or thereabouts) when she finished travelling with the Doctor. (PROSE: Seeing I, Interference - Book Two)
Personality
Sam Jones came from liberal parents. She once said that the only thing that would really shock her parents was if she did drugs. She was a vegetarian and a supporter of Greenpeace and gay rights. The Doctor took her to a Greenpeace rally. (PROSE: Vampire Science)
During her travels with the Doctor, Sam fell in love with him. (PROSE: Longest Day) Sam was bisexual, having dated both men and women. (PROSE: Seeing I)
Despite believing herself to be a pacifist and anti-war, she found herself grabbing a gun following an encounter on Skaro against the Daleks. (PROSE: War of the Daleks)
Habits and quirks
Sam liked to run a few kilometres each day.
She and the Doctor came up with a list of codes (numbers) to apply to different situations they might encounter (so they didn't have to come up with a plan, just say a number). (PROSE: The Janus Conjunction, Unnatural History)
