Dummy Massacre (short story)
Dummy Massacre was the second short story exclusively published on the Who is Doctor Who? website on 27 March 2005 by the BBC webteam. The short story was notable for two reasons: firstly, although his identity would be kept a secret in this story and the next few, this was the first short story on the website to feature Mickey Smith; and secondly, the story was set in the aftermath of the Dummy Massacre as seen in Rose.
Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]
A new webmaster is operating the conspiracy website Who is Doctor Who? and has posted a selection of accounts from the site's readers about the very recent Dummy Massacre, an attack by "killing dolls" on the population; at 07:08PM, when the London Eye became a "wheel of fire", CK saw the Eye from Westminster Bridge and TERI LOVER, who was on the wheel, thought they were going to die; at 07:09PM, when the dummies came to life, Alison was in Holland's in Bluewater when the dummies began to open fire, Max was at a coffee stall outside Bond Street station and hid behind the counter, and Saman78 was in Covent Garden and initially assumed the dummies were a mime act; and at 07:16PM, the attack stopped, NickP had to resist the urge to hurl when he smelt the dummies die.
The webmaster also leaves an area for the site's readers to submit more stories about the attack.

Robin walked past a shop and, after noticing something moving, turn and saw a ghastly plastic dummy walking towards them. Robin made a Ki-ai then performed a roundhouse kick, the only thing they could do. The dummy kept moving after its head went flying off. Robin then realised they were being shot at before seeing that a nearby dead person had left his moped running on the ground. Robin jumped on then drove away, turning their head to see that the dummies were collapsing on the floor. Robin did not stop and carried on as fast as they could, about 30 mph, before getting home and collapsing out of sheer energy desperation, later seeing the whole story on the news later. |

Bob legged it so the dummies did not see him, saying that no one believes him. |
19 | PJ | PJ knew that Toy Story was a documentary. |
20 | Mark Young | Mark is a surgeon at the DWM Hospital where they brought in some of the casualties. One particular similarity that he noticed was the shape and composition of the bullets he found lodged in the victims. Firstly, all the bullets were made of a plastic compound, but the weirdest thing was that in many cases it seemed that the bullets had began to warp into very distinctive shapes. Some were humanoid, as if they had changed shape after entering the body. One particularly nasty example bore the face of the victim. |

26 | Dr. J. Smith | A spokesman from the Meteorological Office, Dr. J. Smith confirms that the incident is nothing more than a combination of mass hysteria, and hallucination brought on by the Earth passing through the electromagnetic tail of a large comet. Smith thanks the readers and hopes they all continue to maintain such refreshing interest in extraordinary phenomena. |

Insisting that the encounter was true despite what others may think, Natasha says that it was the most sacred she had ever been in her entire life. |

At that point, a death doll crashed its hand in to the window display and started to walk menacingly towards her, guessing that it smelt her living flesh. Estelle did not know what else to do but throw the jam scones in to its industrial beige face and run like a crazed chicken. Estelle recalls that it was chaos outside, people were confused and transport was all in a mess because of the destruction from the plastic death dolls. A very scared Estelle tried calling her mum but the phone was off and Estelle feared that she might be dead, but thankfully found later that she was not. Estelle stepped out on to the river bank outside the shopping mall, noticing the London Eye in iridescent blue and beaming out a strange blue disk like radiation. Worldbuilding[[edit] | [edit source]]
- CK compared appearance of the activation of the London Eye to fireworks and St. Elmo's fire.
- CK also heard screaming.
- TERI_LOVER tried to text while on the wheel.
- Alison was in the sportswear section of Holland's when the attack began.
- Max quickly deduced that the dummies were alien.
- NickP compared the smell of the dying dummies to cabbage.
- One notice on the side of the website claims that video footage of the attacked has been offered and the webmaster warns the readers.
- The webmaster is unsure if the dummies are aliens or weapons.
- There are reports of mass burnings of the dummies.
- A leading waxwork museum denies that a figure of David Beckham tried to kill people.
- There is a small tribute to Clive, which mentions that the website was his idea, and that he was a loving father and husband. Clive, a man in a shed, had many dreams and hopes of uncovering the truth. The webmaster says that "we will not forget" and the website will continue to spread the truth, with the next update coming in the next few days.
- This is a small disclaimer about the photographs on the site not necessarily being in the webmaster's copyright, although no infringement is intended.
- There is a small icon for Campaign for Real Aliens.
Notes[[edit] | [edit source]]
- Like Rose before it, this story does not refer to the Autons by name.
- Although the url of the website (both in- and out-of-universe) was titled whoisdoctorwho.co.uk, this is the first story to actually name the website "Who is Doctor Who?", as the website in Rose was actually called just "Doctor Who?".
Authorship[[edit] | [edit source]]

Continuity[[edit] | [edit source]]
- This story, and The Doctor Was Involved in the Dummy Massacre, was set in the aftermath of TV: Rose.
- This story was also set at the same time as PROSE: Operation Mannequin, which was told from UNIT's perspective.
- Mickey Smith taking over Who is Doctor Who? would become an ongoing storyline in later stories published on the Who is Doctor Who? tie-in website, from The Doctor Was Involved in the Dummy Massacre to Lifeboat Museum. The short story The Secret Lives of Monsters, although it has a few minor contradictions with the tie-in website, does mention that the in-universe website continued to be updated after Clive Finch's death. Even the short story Mickey's Blog, which alternately asserts that Mickey never took over Who is Doctor Who? and instead ran a blog, followed a very similar plot to the tie-in website.
- The details about Clive align with his appearance in TV: Rose.
